The release is usually announced late August/September with the release happening in October, but no one can say for certain.

Good, that means we will not have to wait 2 years or more. Some well known DAWs have actually taken that long to come-up with a new version, not good; Logic Pro X took about 3-4 years for a new release, what a joke, and also Presonus Studio One ver II came out some time in early 2012. I much prefer a yearly update schedule, Cakewalk is doing things right in this regard..

Only Cakewalk knows. Pure speculation otherwise, I speculate that the usual schedule won't happen. I hope Cakewalk takes long as they like for X4. Getting it right is much more important, even if it takes an extra year or two to do so.

I totally agree!

The reason people say the vinyl sounds better is because the music was better.

Throughout the SONAR (non-X) updates they usually came in the fall, sometimes with early announcements, other times  not.  X has been ... less regular, starting at 8.5 (the last update for old SONAR).  It was a freebie, if I remember right, and the scheduling got all screwy after that.

I would hope there is an update this fall, but there was talk of another X3 update, too.  Anyway, Cake updates SONAR about once a year, sometimes less.  I don't think I can remember one that took over a year and a half.

But we are seldom given a heads up, although the bakers used to disappear for a few months before a new release.  Anybody heard from them?

Sonar hit a home run with X3e, and part of that was them bypassing the bombardment of complaints about how long it was taking to get to X3, to do the extensive rework and weaving for things like Melodyne support and VST3, and all of the new features.

That was followed by actually the 1st maintenance update being released at the same time the base X3 was released, then followed in pretty short order by the other updates - culminating in X3e.

X3 has garnered massive respect and admiration from lots of folks in the industry, and has enjoyed a sizable growth in new users, in the process, not to mention the current users having such good experiences.

So, the above is all groundwork for them being well-positioned to create a new raised standard with the move to whatever X4 ends up becoming.  I say this because (as some have pointed out already), they are quite willing to work with X3e for whatever time it takes to craft a solid X4, all due to there being a good and stable X3e to work with in the meantime.

So, kudos to Cakewalk for where they are now, and for where they can take us moving forward into X4.  Kudos as well to the Sonar user base, for being willing to buy into giving Cakewalk development the opportunity to craft a SOLID X4 release.

I have been SOOOO happy with X3e, and its features and stability, as it gives me plenty to learn to master during the baking time of X4.  I have zero worries about sitting at my computer and launching into project after project in X3e, and have to say that these past months have been the single most productive time for my work.  That's a big deal for me.

I am quite willing to give the bakers whatever time they need for X4.

It was released in Oct 2011. And they still haven't fixed a showstopper bug for multi-timbral/multi-out synth users who want to color-code track strips by instrument type.

I'm using Sonar X3e 9/7 and having a blast! Very stable and always learning new tricks.

Being productive with what I have (X3), I too can wait for X4 and will upgrade when it comes out. I just wonder where the money comes from to pay for all the engineering... Is Gibson pouring money in? Are the continuing sales of X3 (and t-shirts :-) sufficient to provide profit and pay for engineering salaries?

Like most users, I want them to be very successful.

You've hit on a good point - Cakewalk's historical yearly-release pattern provides needed cash flow for the continuation of development. Whether that will continue is Cakewalk's secret, but users have generally been able to look for new versions or major updates every fall.

When this thread starts...and it seems to start around this time every year...I'm reminded that in comparison to other DAWs Cakewalk is ridiculously punctual with their updates and releases. Every fall you can count on a major announcement, despite people losing their minds in September about whether it's going to happen or not.

And, like said above, X3e is pretty darned solid, I"m still wrapping my head around TH2 and some of the other toys. Plus sheesh, I just picked up Komplete for a pittance and will probably need to upgrade my DAW hardware to accomodate it all. I don't even think I want a SONAR update for another long while until I can replenish my coffers!

I'm sorry to say the Hovercraft is off the table. The spec requires it to be able to go at least 100 feet vertically on takeoff, but Noel hasn't been able to get it above 60 feet. He did say I could hold on to the beta, though. The only problem with that is "crash" has a very different meaning from the usual.

He did promise a hover car not a hovercraft. So I'm still hopeful. This wasn't an unreasonable request, I notice my other requests to end world pollution and to end all wars were ignored (dismissed as a feature request) and to supply all their personal PIN numbers (entirely justified in my view), so Cakewalk needs to get their act together here. And damn it fix the broken internet (I do have a backup of the internet at home BTW just in case).

Like most users, I want them to be very successful.

While I can't give exact figures, Cakewalk is doing fine. The company is acutely aware that the loyal user base is a major factor in making this possible. Of course another factor is rolling out a superb release like X3, as we're picking up new users and getting some existing users of other DAWs to switch.

Cakewalk's staff is highly dedicated and very bright. They would love to be able to do everything they want to do as well as fulfill all the needs of the user base. Obviously this is impossible, but that doesn't keep them from trying. The main advantage of becoming more successful would be the ability to accelerate progress by hiring more people (although it's not easy to find people of the caliber of existing Cakewalk employees).

The bottom line is that we were very happy when we acquired Cakewalk but if we'd known how it was going to play out over the past several months, we would have been even happier   Most importantly, I truly believe the best is yet to come, and I don't just mean in terms of subsequent updates but what this company will be doing 5 and 10 years from now. Cakewalk's time has come...stay tuned.

was literally 2 weeks before X1 came out and I've punished myself constantly for it.

Other than Cakewalk, no one knows the ETA for any future updates or upgrades and Cakewalk is not talking. Historically Cakewalk has offered a "buy now and get the next version free" sale when the next paid upgrade is a few weeks out. However, we have no idea how the new owners will handle the next release. X3 was released while Cakewalk was in the process of being sold to Gibson.

Can we not just have fun with the current release, with a patch to fix the Arturia VST 3 bug fix, why do we have to go through this process of getting the new version up to speed for three to four months only to repeat again eight months later.

Well, i'm sure I'm not the only person who was able to make music from day 1 of having X3. It's not like it took three to four months before it was useful, more like three to four months to have enough usage cases out there to identify issues, set priorities, and do fixes.

As to why do it all over again, hopefully it would be for the same reason it was worth getting comping, Melodyne, Addictive Drums, colorized mixer strips, etc. If the next version doesn't have compelling/useful features for some people, they can keep chugging along contentedly with X3...just as some people are still on 8.5.

Sonar appeals to both hobbyists and pros. For pros, anything that gives a competitive advantage or saves time is well worth adopting as soon as possible. For example in my case, the amount of time saved with the new comping dwarfs the time spent learning to become proficient at it. For hobbyists, it's often the extras like Addictive Drums or the Nomad Factory plug-ins that are appealing. Different people have different priorities; it's only possible to know whether you want an update ASAP or can afford to wait awhile after scrutinizing the list of features, and seeing which ones matter to you.

I actually think that this is the first time in history that people aren't champing at the bit for the next version.  The reason is that X3 is just so solid that folks have got back to the business of just making music.  Sure it's not 100% perfect, but it doen't impede the musical process at all.

Yeah, there are alway more features in the wish lists, but I think the level of satisfaction with Sonar is at an all time high.
