This is probably somewhat OT, sorry. I'm thinking of getting x3. But, if I get x3 I will probably think why, why did I not get x4. I mean it's x4 instead of x3, that probably means I should have waited until x4 came out. But, if there are some critical bugs still in x4 will it ruin the experience? X3 probably does not have many bugs that would make things hard. So what should I do? I cannot win. Now that I started using my Roland Duo-Capture I have experienced almost none crashes or freezings. I am kind of content. But there is a feeling in my head that if I upgrade I will make better music or that it will at least sound better. I do not know what I should do. I need a sign!!!

For a sign, look at the balance in your checking account.

But seriously--first things first. Download the X3 demo version. If X4 comes out within 30 days, you'll have been able to use X3 AND jump immediately to X4. If it doesn't come out in 30 days, you'll know enough about X3 to make an informed decision about whether you want it or not (I suspect you will).

Then if X4 comes out shortly thereafter, you can take advantage of the grace period for upgrades. If not, you'll have had the opportunity to use X3 until it does.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

@kakku, I think the standard that was set with X3's initial stability and bug fixes has set many people's expectations for X4. X3 has proven itself, so is not a bad investment... You know what you are getting and what it does. X4 is still a "mystery."

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

If you have waited this long I would wait a little longer. Though all the advice above is thoughtful and sound.

Thank you guys for the tips. I think I will wait until x4 comes and then rethink the whole upgrade thing.

What you decide about when to upgrade DO NOT uninstall any of the previous versions.

My journey from 8.5 to X3 has been unhappy.
Have had to clone all tracks in projects to get drag/drop icons to work, to get tracks to follow bus colors.
Had to create new buses to get audio to work,...

X3 loses audio when I open IE, even to use the help file;;;; very strange.  8.5 does not.
No doubt related to my "pumpkin" of an audio interface.

I purchased X1, and X2, but could not get past the interface annoyances.  Have been trying to use X3 primarily because of the track colors to organize big projects, and am interested melodyne MIDI functions.

I will purchase X? when it is available, hoping that just like Windows 10 will have a bit more of the W7 UI intelligence, X? will have a bit more of the 8.5 reasonableness. (IE: user configurable 1-click buttons bars, fewer menus,.................................)

I am happy that it appears the Gibson Overlords are more supportive. The constant attention of THE CRAIG is a way wonderful benefit.

Praise be to THE CRAIG.

Andrew Rossa [Cakewalk]

I think the best business sense would be to release a product when it's ready.

F**k right ! :)
Now that's a quote!!! :)

Get X3.  It is great and stable.  Who knows when a stable version of X4 will exist.   If I had to bet, I would think a lot of the skills used for X3 will translate to X4, so that will make your transition smoother.  The prices for upgrades, even outside grace period are very reasonable IMHO.

Does Cakewalk have  a history of releasing Sonar and it crashing repeatedly or is there more to this suggestion of yours?

Check "settings>Audio>Playback and Recording" in Sonar x3 to be sure the box to share drivers with other programs is enabled. if not that be be the cause of this issue for you. If your want more support on this issue please start a thread. I have not searched the forum to see if you already asked for help so if you have then disregard.

Back on topic: I like what the CakeWalkers have said so far. I'm waiting patiently for x4 or whatever.

This app is really cheap at the Cakewalk Store.  Pretty powerful DAW for the price right now.

I get the sense that Cakewalk is doing what they can to get X2 folks on X3. It's for their own good

As we all know, X2 never got a lot of upgrade luv. $59 to upgrade to X3 may not be a free upgrade, but it's a helluva deal.

Thank you for your response.  Yea I set all those bits immediately.
And I uninstalled and installed the audio drivers.

Monday is a good day for a release.

I figger there are at least as many Sonar users outside the US as there are in.

And since T-Day is celebrated by less than 6 percent of the world's population, releasing this week is a great idea.

Provided the program is ready for primetime.

Yeah that's a no brainer, it's like 40 quid. You don't know that some of the bundled stuff in X3 will be in X4, so you'll get that. Then you can wait for X4 to release, dust to settle and get that.

Re: Sonar X4 release date 2015/08/18 04:43:50 (permalink)
Instead of just adding more bells and whistles some which I may never use, I hope their next version makes the entire recording experience a bit EASIER, especially mastering.  I think the mastering has actually gotten worse(noise to sound ratio where my songs are louder on same volume on the 8.5) on my X2(Yes, it could be the technician rather than the tool), however I don't think it's all me since I've used cakewalk(MIDI only days) for over 20 years and it has only gotten progressively better until X2 in my opinion on mastering.  Yes, I should upgrade to X3, but this is the first time I think Calkwalk digressed and there is no mention of improvements for X3 on mastering.

So if there are any Cakewalk folks reading this, please spend some time SIMPLYING the entire experience of making the most professional music tools especially the mastering.

I admit I'm not professional studio guy, but I do love using much of the Sonar tools.  If I can get a better and EASIER mastering experience, I would instantly upgrade and pay more.

Again, what is the key word?  SIMPLIFY the MASTERING process!!

Only Cakewalk knows. Pure speculation otherwise, I speculate that the usual schedule won't happen. I hope Cakewalk takes long as they like for X4. Getting it right is much more important, even if it takes an extra year or two to do so.

I totally agree!

thumbs up!
