I asked Robin Askwith for an innuendo. He said Ok I'll give you one, after I've finished recording in my Daw of choice - Sonar X1d

I'm going to throw something out here...

Is it possible that the Visual appearance of a DAW might influence the way people PERCEIVE its sound? Think the McGurk Effect here....

Trimph, that's actually a great question. Unfortunately, I don't know how much merit it would hold but I can share a few experiences with you to where *I* actually thought that myself.

When Sonar 6 first came out, quite a few of us thought we were hearing a difference in sound compared to 5. I remember someone starting a thread something along the lines of "is it just me or does the sound appear to be better in 6 than 5?"

Now the catch 22 for me is, I never really was blown away by 6 and at the time had a problem with the console view. In 5, I had a perfect spread...but wasn't crazy about the colors. In 6 I believe we got more color options, so that part I dug, but for some odd reason, I thought I heard a sound improvement also. It was like...things recorded in 5 seemed to sound better in 6 or something. It could have been all of us that thought that way being out of our minds.

Of course I've noticed differences in X1 but that's due to pro channel in my opinion. Now another weird thing for me....the Fabfilter plugs...I think they are the ugliest plugs out there. But, they are quite powerful and I never had a problem with how they sounded due to their looks lol. I still have a problem using them sometimes because I just hate looking at them. Another is Pro Tools. For years it just looked like a DOS program to me. Working in it made me sick. It a little better today, but still ugly as sin in my opinion considering quite a few consider it "the holy grail of DAWs". But, I can't fault the sound or praise it for being better.

I think we may definitely think we hear a difference when we use a DAW we love in all areas. I used to use Paris Audio years ago. I loved the way it looked and loved the way it worked...so naturally, at that time I would have fought to the death telling people it sounded the best. LOL! Who knows...it may play into all of us in some way...or at least for *some* that may think they hear a difference.

I still may try and do the 1 minute project thing just for the heck of it. I figure maybe an acoustic guitar intro with maybe a little piano, a vocal, drums, bass and some nasty guitars, maybe some strings that kick in so that we cover a wide array of instruments. Write the song about daw differences or something. LOL! Might be fun. I'll see how my schedule looks next week...maybe I can start working on it a little at a time. Ah what's the use....I can't hear it on my end...who am I foolin'. LOL!

@ Danny: ....I know what you mean!!

BTW...what caught my eye was this little thing that showed up on a thread at KVR...
The title read...Purple Sounds Best: A Matter Of Mass Psychology

We’re probably nowhere near as objective about sound as we think

http://www.prosoundweb.com/article/purple_sounds_best_a_matter_of_mass_psychology/P1/

I think sometimes that we might be more affected by the way the DAW appears than we think

Well, that's the core of the discussion, isn't it? Perception is unreliable. As engineers, it falls to us to understand that and develop methods for working around it (and with it).

I have a purple gel here. Should I tape it over my display, or to my speakers? Or maybe my glasses to cover all possibilities. Then it should work for TV as well. In fact, I might feel better about my entire life! Thank you, trimph1!

Kev that is fascinating, I had never heard of this effect at all. This could explain a lot. GUI's consist of warm colours, cold colours, sharp contrasts, soft contrasts, and many many more variables. I know I fall into the sucker audio trap time after time of staring at the waveform(s) as I playback tracks, when the best option is to hide the entire Sonar GUI or turn the monitors off. I wonder if there could be default screenshot or series of them to display when that would effect the perception of playback ie warmer, colder, harsher, etc.

My thoughts on this are entirely since watching that 3 minute BBC clip of the McGurk effect. If anyone reading this thinks it's complete twaddle, watch the clip, it's a bit of an 'ear opener' Certainly was to me anyway.

I frequently switch the screen off during playback for this very reason. It's really easy to think you're listening, when actually your primary mental focus is on the visual representation.

Sorry[its ALWAYS my fault] but it has,but you know how it goes-"rather be dead than cool""monkey see monkey do"pay to play.

Just to arrive back to "sane land",I think the way "stuff" looks can certainly affect the way we think it sounds.....to a degree, and how much of a degree is the obvious question we'd like to know, but one of the reasons I jumped on X1 was due to the greys and blues,to me, it just "looked cooler" than others I got to see.

Appearance is always way more important than most are willing to admit[me included],I mean look at our cars, our hair, our clothes[those 3 things, for me don't look anywhere near as good as X1!]
