Superior 2.0 WOW

I just received my Superior Drummer 2.0 from toontrack, and man, the Avatar samples are outstanding. Can't wait to transfer them to some existing projects. The new software is killer, allow endless configurations with all other toontrack projects. You can get exactly the kit you want.

That's good to hear, David. Mine was delivered to my office just about an hour ago. Can't wait to install it tonite. Ironically, even tho I use EZDrummer (and most of the EZXs) extensively and am a demo artist at Toon I never really used my original DFH Superior. In fact I almost sold it once. Glad I didn't now as I was able to upgrade to 2.0 cheaply. My only worry is that although I have DFH in the box at my studio it is not on my computer and I hope I do not have to install it before installing the new upgrade. Glad you like it. I'm sure I will too!

Be aware though that the NY Avatar kit that S2.0 comes with has very different midi velocity sensitivity than other kits like from DFHS or from EZ-Drummer. I got my copy of S2.0 yesterday and recorded a test from my V-Drums pad kit. Using only that one test recording, I rendered the midi data using the DW kit from DFHS loaded up in S2.0, the EZX-DFH kit from EZ-Drummer loaded up in S2.0, and using the NY Avatar kit that comes native with S2.0 The DFHS and EZX kits are fairly similar and could easily be swapped back and forth, but playing the same midi data to the Avatar kit, produces radically different results.

Here are the three samples using the exact same midi data in each test.

DW kit from DFHS loaded up in S2.0
    http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=403575&songID=6708421

DFH kit from EZ-Drummer loaded up in S2.0
    http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=403575&songID=6708438

NY Avatar kit that comes with S2.0
    http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=403575&songID=6708446

Keep in mind, all three of these are using the exact same midi file each time, and it is very apparent that the Avatar kit doesn't respond to midi velocity the same as the other two kits. It takes a harder hit to produce a similar volume to the other kits. I will be tweaking the Avatar kit over the weekend to make it respond more closely to the way the other kits do, because I want to be able to swap kits back and forth to see which one fits the song the best, so they have to be able to playback velocity wise, at least fairly similar to each other.

Yep, got to give props as well. I am in no way affiliated with Toontrack. I have heard ModBod's comments about EZ drummer for quite a while but thought (EZ drummer) it was a toy. I was totally wrong about EZ drummer. Sorry Mod! ;) This is basically version 2 of EZ drummer. AWESOME!! After hearing about Superior 2.0 in development my curiousity got the best of me. Understand that I have mainly been using Drums On Demand and Stylus RMX for most of my drum work. I was looking for a "song construction" type acoustic drummer VST that works like Stylus RMX in regards to flexibility and drag and drop midi capability. Stylus RMX is more a pure remix loop tool, not really song construction in the purest sense.

After watching the Superior 2.0 videos with Pat Thrall and drummer NirZ I knew I was hooked. I bought a few EZX expansions and installed Superior 2.0 yesterday so I'm still working it out but so far I am convinced this IS the best "song construction" VST drummer on the market. These drums are beautiful. This product was designed really well. The engineering that went into the sampling is professional. The midi's are recorded by NirZ who has incredible feel. Great product. Deserves your attention if your into drums on a DAW. 5 stars!

wow - I can feel my wallet already cryin' :)

Is it really THAT much better than EZD ? Better than Addictive Drums as well (I don't have much experience with AD but in the little i was able to play with it I liked it) ?

    Hello Gregmang

Well, I haven't tried Addictive Drums so maybe I need to but this product is incredible. If you already own EZ Drummer your wallet may not groan as much as you think. Their upgrade from EZ to Superior 2.0 seems really reasonable. I wish I had looked into EZ Drummer earlier. I like the well designed but "keep it simple" approach of EZ. I held off on EZ Drummer when I heard about Superior 2.0.

Check the details first obviously, but they've done their homework in regards to getting all aspects of the product right. Design, ease of use vs flexibility, recording quality, recording environment, engineering/performance talent and detail, library expandibility.

Like I said, check the details before buying. And to answer your question. Yes, they do sound better. Higher bit rate, better drum room, better drums, better engineer, better drummer.

    EZ (16 bit) drums
Superior 2.0 (24 bit) drums recorded at Hit Factory using lots of room mics.

Well, for certain things AD is absolutely wonderful. And all the tweakability is great. But it looks like Superior 2.0 may be the new sheriff in town.

You don't need to have DFH installed to use Superior, but you might want to install it, just so you can use the sound library. Superior only has the Avatar samples, but Superior's sample library is massive, 7 DVDs if I remember. You only need to have DFH registered in order to get the uprade registered.

7 Dvd's, I might need to get another hard drive... I probably wont need to instal the 7 dvd's of samples. Iwould use V-drums to trigger it, just like i do with EZD. I would get it because of all the possible sounds i could get from them. EZD is great, but it has just a few kit sounds.

You have a choice of Full Install (18.5 GB) or a slimmed down version. About 4 GB I believe.

I got my V-Drums dialed in to match the Avatar kit now. Here's a sample of what I'm getting now with it.

I totally re-dialed my V-Drums brain to match S2.0, and I haven't yet tried any older drumkits to see how much I may have screwed them up, but it works real good with this one now. ;)

Well, I started the install tonite. . .too late, I'm afraid, and when I saw it was gonna take over 3 hours to install all 20 gigs I bailed until tomorrow. Hope this won't cause any problems. Should I completely uninstall and start again or am I OK to just start installing the sound library again tomorrow morning?

Actually, I'm using single trigger pads on the toms, and what you're hearing is just the "smacked real hard" samples kicking in. I have dual trigger on the snare, and all cymbals including hihat, but my toms are all single. I could go dual trigger on toms, but I'd have to either upgrade my V-Drums brain, or go to all single trigger pads for the cymbals, which I don't want to do.

How about a little hi hat work for the crowd?

Gimme another day or so to get it dialed in, and Ill run something up the flagpole. ;)

Well, mine also said 2 hours 50 minutes, but it doesn't actually take that long, only about 1 hour 25 minutes. I actually ran out of disc space, so I coudn't load disc 5. When I started again after freeing up some space, it took much longer, I think it was verifiing what was already on the drive, so , yes, if I were you I would uninstall and start over.

    RE: Superior 2.0 WOW 2008/07/12 12:50:39 (permalink)
Anyone also have BFD 2.0? I'd love to hear some thoughts on how they stack up against each other.

My dilemma is that I own about $1000 of BFD drums, so upgrading to BFD 2 would seem like a good idea to get more mileage out of what I already own. On the other hand, I also have EZD along with the Vintage and Nashville expansions, so that also seems like I "need'" to get upgrade for the exact same reasons.

My main complaint with BFD 1.5x is that the grooves aren't as well organized as EZD. Perhaps that has been remedied with 2.0? The other complaint with BFD is that I already have about 55 gigs devoted to its drums, and I'd need to double that for BFD 2.0. Superior 2.0's smaller footprint is attactive to me. The Toontack compression that was used on the 16-bit samples on EZD sounded plenty fine and I imagine that the 24-bit samples are just wonderful.

If I elect to get off the BFD bandwagon I wonder what the resale value is for my BFD "Jazz and Funk" and "Deluxe Collections"?

    Sorry for the rambling :-)

Well, hee hee, oh yeah, baby. I finally got Superior 2.0 installed and authorized (along with ezplayer pro and the standalone) and although at first I had trouble (totally my numbskull fault) in getting EZPlayer Pro to work the new system is just fabulous!! Great sounds, great tweakability, and the ability to import and use instruments from other drum samplers. It's great!!

How do you guys compare the Superior 2.0 sounds to BFD 2? I got a chance to mess with BFD 2 recently and thought it sounded great ... like the new kits even better than the originals.

The new X-Pads are way cool. I put a full compliment of Latin Percussion instruments from DFHS in with the Avatar kit.

    Here's what it looks like:

OK - I caved & ordered it. "infinitley tweakable" sold me, so whoever said that...... thanks, I think!

Now if they can just find Canada in under a month.........

    Sigh...

Sadly I must wait a couple of months before getting any new gear...

OK, the next question for Glenbo or Mod is: Any Sonar drum maps available for Superior 2.0???

You really don't need drum maps with Superior 2.0 Just like DFHS, it has a "learn" button where you select a sound you want to assign to a key or drum pad, click learn, hit the key or pad and it's assigned.

OK - that sounded pretty cool!

I have just bought BFD 2 - perhaps you could upload the drum project somewhere and tomorrow I'll have a go at making BFD 2 play the same drum session so we can compare?
