See if the SONAR X1 Power book covers Perfect Space VST, it uses IR files.

I believe it does. In fact I think it is in the effects section I am currently working through. Cool.

My mistake. I must be thinking of something else. I have guitar rig 4, but I don't ever use it. Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.

Guitar Rig uses impulses (some of the best out there, by RedWirez, just like Scuffham), but I don't think you can load your own.

Still, it's easy enough to bypass the cabinet emulation section of your amp sim and to simply place an IR loader like Perfect Space or, something  like my favorite impulses loader, MixIr2, by the same guys who did the RedWirez impulses.

You have to have Reflektor (comes with Komplete)

Impulse Response (IR) files are wav files of acoustic spaces eg a Hall, Theatre, Church etc. the list is unending.
They are typically used in Reverbs where the IR is used to simulate the reverb condition of the acoustic space.
So in practice if you wanted the reverb sound of a big auditorium you would look for an IR from a big auditorium. The wav files used are
Actually created in the space. So you might come across an IR from Madison Square Garden because that's where the IR was recorded.
Usually though the files are named in a more generic sense as per the usual reverb simulations large hall, small room, bathroom etc.

Thanks Rain for the pointer to MixIr2. Might have to pick it up on my next buying spree. I have played around with Perfect Space for cab IRs. Usually just use the cabs in GR, they are good enough for me.

Ah, okay. That I understand... just wasn't familiar with the term. I don't understand how one would go about just recording the acoustics of a room to be applied to other audio but I'll leave that up to the sooper geniuses who get paid to do that kind of wackiness. Thanks, mudgel.

Well it's an Amp Sim,and not a mic'ed cabinet from a real amp....basically it's good,but it's an "amp sim".

How would you guys suggest using an IR with this? is the MixIr2 worth the entrance price vs. perfect space? I mean it is an IR...I suppose it just needs some kind of wrapper?

The MixIr2 is not that expensive, the site seems worthy like they've done some serious work...the full monty here might be worth it if there's a way to utilize it in X2...

Seems like the day of needing rooms might be changing..

I'm using SOnar Platinium on a 6 core Lynx Audio machine and a ton of vintage pre-amps/eq's/comps I build for fun and sometimes money, REDD.47/API/Neve I also use the UAD stuff, and also use a Macbook Logic 9 through Apogee...

Doesn't TH2 have a tool for user IRs? If you are looking for an alternate solution and run 32bit or don't mind using 32bit VSTs keFir is a free solution worth a look.

If Guitar Rig 4 or 5 has a way to add user IRs I have not found where.

Guitar Rig 4 does not use IR's but 5 does.  If you use the Control Room Pro in stead of the older cabs it used Redwire Impulse Responses (IR's).  I know if no way to add your own IR's.

Yes you did. I probably could have short circuited the whole mess by stating what I knew about GR4 and 5 rather than formulating my post as I did. People have been asking for a way to use custom IRs in Guitar Rig for some time. Buying additional NI product(s) is not a reasonable solution for some Guitar Rig users.

But reflector is separate purchase.  It's not possible with just GR.

Of course not. Reflektor is an add on. Wouldn't make much sense to sell it if was included free. Nonetheless, it is possible in GR5 with the addon and anyone with Komplete may already have Reflektor. I hadn't noticed anyone mentioning "without the use of an addon". Perhaps NI will incorporate it in the next release, who knows?

As others have mentioned you can simply mute the Cab in GR5 and use Perfect Space instead. If GR5 subsequent effects/processing are required you just add another instance of GR5 with no amps/cab and go from there.

Didn't GR4 have Control Room (which is impulse-based)? I thought the difference in GR5 was the new Control Room Pro which is much more flexible (but still won't let you use your own impulses) .

Yep, you got it right on all points. When 4 Control Room and 5 Control Room Pro were announced (both IR based) there was a fair amount of user chatter about adding the ability to use your own IRs. There are workarounds as mentioned in this thread.

Edit: I find it interesting that IRs have popped up as a topic again. I though this stuff was old news.

It is rather old news for most, but I recently relocated and no longer have the kind of rooms I used to have for studio work, I never needed IR's in the past and found them cumbersome...now however I m reticent to build another large room and while I haven't exactly streamlined I am working in a different fashion than I used to and prefer to "cheat" rather than search around/build/rent/etc...a decent room for some of my work...

If an IR can get me within 95% of where I want to be room wise its a no-brainer at this point...if not...well there's certainly using an actual "room" again...I just don't want the hassle of driving/finding/setup/etc...

Hope it works out for you.
For a room simulation, I would try using Perfect Space. That is what it is designed for.
If you like it, you might want to check out it's big brother from Voxengo, Pristine Space.

I'm a bit biased - I like these guys at RedWirez a lot. They're a small business, so your e-mails don't get lost and unanswered. But their stuff is so good that companies like NI and Scuffham license their impulses.

I haven't used Perfect Space in a while, but MixIR really shines when it comes to guitar cab emulation, because you can load multiple impulses and mix them, which, imho, is the secret to a lively guitar sound - say, a ribbon mic on the grid, a '57 a few inches away, a pair of mics to capture the room sound...

Control Room Pro (in Guitar Rig) does allow to create such mixes, but it doesn't let you chose your own impulses. MixIR2 gives you almost endless options.

I know what you mean. I remember when I started using impulses - using Sonic Foundry's Acoustic Mirror... I'd hit "process offline" and see the CPU on my PII 350 go up to 300% usage. But the sound I got on the other end was worth it.

Yea, I did not bring over my collection of SoundForge IRs with the new install. I did drag over a lot of IR wavs though. Might need to dust that stuff off, just for fun.
