After my rig was stolen a few weeks ago, I'd completely stopped listening to any and all music. I didn't want to hear other peoples' joy, so this is my first tentative peek into the Songs forum in quite a while.

Turned out to be a damn good choice for literally the first music I've listened to in a month. It provided a needed attitude adjustment.

This, along with Bob Bone's story of setting up a recording rig in a hospital room while recovering from surgery, has inspired me to soldier on, even without a DAW. So thanks for that. BTW, it translates well to laptop speakers.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I still use Komplete 8, but I've added other products that were added to K9U and K10U during special sales, like Black Friday. Komplete is a great way to get a lot of content at a reasonable price. And I couldn't live without Kontakt.

You had me hooked from the get go with this song. Love that sparse Celtic harp and cello (?) at the beginning (gave me goosebumps) and then the song evolves to a full fledged orchestral arrangement.  Very nice to listen to on a rainy morning here, and I'm also thinking what a great film soundtrack it could be.
I always enjoy listening to your music.

Great work, great song, and your control of the sample libraries is outstanding.  Everything sounds very realistic.  I just picked up EW Woodwinds, Brass and Hollywood Strings during their last special, but have been out of country for a bit, and looking forward to doing something with them - this has certainly inspired.   Although, something of this caliber is unlikely at this point:)   Really enjoyable listen, soundtrack quality for sure.

Just as I suspected...  another perfectly executed piece, from composition to mix and everything between.  If I didn't know better I would think this was commercially released.    I also really liked the sense of space - big, but not overwhelming.   Just right.

Thank you Steve! Still learning how to create spaces using reverb. On this one, I used a concert hall reverb on a bus, then added a second bus with a non-linear hall. The second is used to add subtle movement to the space. I think it worked really well blending them together.

Big, sweeping, playful and well-designed stuff here, Dan.

Loved the roll into the drum part at 3:00 or so, and the strings hitting on the beat part..

Thanks James! I appreciate the comments! I listened to some of your orchestral stuff a year or two ago and was totally floored by it. Decided I needed to try harder, lol.

I had listened to this one awhile back and just didn't have the time to comment on it. I think this one is another hit! You should write for picture. I am always hooked on a nice harp, even if it's a sampled harp. I love the way you put this one together Dan. Nice work all round'!!

Yeah, I liked this track a lot. Really, really nice. Builds very smoothly and naturally, and I thought the various transitions -- as the piece widened out and got more complex -- were exquisitely put together. I got a chill when the female voice drifted in around the 1:25 mark. Gorgeous. Strong melodies and counter-melodies, and the orchestral vibe at the end was great.

Also, the mix sounded really polished on my monitors, smooth with a nice overall gloss to it.

If I were to offer up any minor points of criticism, I thought the harp at the beginning sounded a bit too mechanical, and the string solo at the very beginning was a bit uneven in tone. But minor points, really.

Thanks Robert! I appreciate the kind words.

The harp at the beginning could have been better, I completely agree. The opening cello solo is from Embertone's Blakus Cello. While I want to love their Intimate Strings Series libraries, I have found it difficult to get a consistent tone from them. Compared to the new demos for Cinesamples Solo Cello, for example, they are just too organic and difficult to control. I like them, but I don't love them. In comparison, the solo violin was from Chris Hein and it was a joy to play.

Easily would fit into a Corrs set. It would even sound good if you were drinking Coors. with Enya.

Dan, I appreciate most of all your composer's sensibilities - you find the sweet spots in the arrangement to add and subtract the little motifs - ending up in a most pleasing whole.  And then, your mixing skills are some pretty considerable icing on the cake.

Very well done and conceived! Glad to know you are a weekend warrior, there's hope for me!

One small idea would be the harp at the very beginning, I listened on headphones, it has some upper frequency crispy wispy artifacts going on. Or, more likely with your mixing skills, I need new headphones.

cheers,
-Tom

Thanks Tom! The wispies on the harp are coming from the reverb. Didn't survive the mp3 conversion. :(

Thanks Mark! One thing I have learned, no string library sounds like the demos out of the box, lol. You should see what the project looks like once all of the articulations are in, some just playing a few notes here and there, and the expression lanes clutter up everything. But it works!
