Here's a quick mod I did - Tungsten with the gold replaced by blue, and the compact record button on the transport with visual indicators like is on the full module:

A bit rough around the edges in places but it does the job.

Is there anywhere to share these yet?

For now just post a link to it from your hosting site like we do for screenshots.

I think since this is in Early Access right now, things may change before release (unlikely, of course), so I'd tend to hold out then with anything until we have a gold release. For all I know, the gold release could absolutely break my mod... I guess we'll find out soon enough!

Hopefully there'll be a Theme sub forum like we have with Features & Ideas and Problem Reports that we can all dump our mods in there.

Is the new editor able to import images already made up elsewhere, or is it limited to what's in the loaded theme?

If it can import/export (drag & drop) image files then you could use the blue buttons from the Mercury theme in the tungsten theme or vise verse without changing any colors. I would keep a backup of the original themes, of course.

I still can't find a way to set the Folder text color. It still seems to be tied to the buss text color.

Can anyone see how to set the Folder text? (so it's different than the buss text color?)

My impression after reading through this thread is that the Theme Editor is not a simple program to use. Please correct me if I am wrong. I was hoping you could just click on an element and choose a different color. Will there be or is there detailed directions on how to use the Theme Editor?
Thanks

I would say it's simple, but daunting. IOW the actual ways to change the colors is easy, but actually deciding which elements to change, how they change, and how deep you want to go, gets you into the weeds pretty fast.

Some things are easy to change, like background colors. Others require working with an image editor. Creating a new theme from scratch is not for the faint of heart, but making a few tweaks isn't hard if you know how to use an image editing program.

That's not possible when working with multi-color PNG graphics (which are used in the SONAR GUI). You can change hue of the image but it may not always look good for all colors in the image.

Drawing a new theme takes plenty of time - for example, I've spent more than 100 hours to draw some of my SONAR themes and they're not even complete. It's better to leave graphics works for graphics designers and create good music meanwhile. :)

I suppose there's a trade off here. On the one hand a super-whizzy UI tweaker thing within Sonar itself would be really cool. On the other hand, nobody really wants the developers of an audio app to be spending their time making an in depth graphics editor.

Yes, but...it's "little" things like colour matching and font sizes and gradients if you want to edit an existing item or build from scratch.

For example, I really like the dark of Tungsten, but the 3D of Mercury; I'd like to use a hybrid of the two (much like Lord Tim's done, but with "real" buttons), by using the Mercury icons where I can in (which is really easy to do via the Theme Editor, but the way, as you can "remove" a custom change and revert to the Mercury element) - sadly, that makes the borders of the icons and shading not match the Tungsten background, so the replaced icons look out of place when mixed in (I spent about an hour editing *just* the Track Inspector buttons to get them to work and I'm bored!).

Even just changing a background colour on an existing icon isn't easy as they often have gradients.

That said, the end results if you are prepared to spend the time, can be good and what you want.  I will see about sharing my theme later when I'm happy(ish) with it.

Glad you're digging the theme, guys!

And yes, that took a couple of hours to do. It was a hell of a lot of tedious work and I'm pretty damn fast with a graphics editor. I think there's still a few spots that need to be refined on this to help people really get the most out of it (batch editing being high on my list) but like John said, I'd prefer the Bakers to make killer audio tools first and if they can throw a bit of love towards the Theme Editor's way too when they have the chance, great!

I really appreciate this tool though. When I get a chance, I'd like to add a bit more 3D into Tungsten (or my Blue one - whatever) if I can. I do prefer Mercury when it comes to the look but I'm big on dark themes. That said, I'd love to see someone do an amazing light theme too. I'm sure we have some really talented graphics people floating around the forum!

I feel the same way. I'm working on bringing most of the light blue things from Mercury through to Tungsten. (Which is straightforward as you just "remove" the Tungsten elements)

“Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy” is attributed to Benjamin Franklin perhaps in error, but the thought remains a worthy sentiment nonetheless.

Which is what I've been doing, but you do end up with some slightly unsightly graphics in places if you're not careful (ie. spend time fixing them in an image editor).

Well the recording indicator that I changed to have it show the different recording states in the compact transport just had parts of the large transport buttons cut and pasted over the top of the smaller compact buttons. The positioning and size looks a bit clunky. Ideally the overlays would be either smaller or something different entirely.

Basically what I did was open up every gold graphic and change the hue to -180 degrees so it changed to blue. Worked great on single colour controls, but stuff where there was, say, a red letter or icon over the top of the original gold part, just selecting the gold and ignoring the rest so I could alter it was tricky. There was a bit of antialiasing around the different colour so if you look carefully at those controls, you can see a slight fringe left behind from the gold before it goes to the new blue colour.

It's pretty much that kind of thing. I didn't really tweak many of the non graphic colours in it either, which could have maybe used a bit more attention. The blue is perhaps just a touuuuccchhh dark too for my tastes.

But I'm nit-picking. I'm pretty happy overall how it came up. Keen to have some more free time to see how far I can go with it.

I'm sure at some point - people who know what they're doing can come up with some nice themes - and maybe even sell them for a couple of $$ ;-)
Then we can tweak these...

I won't be able to use this fancy new package. There's too much fine work for my eyes to handle and not enough graphics chops for it to be practical. I spent a day trying it and accomplished very little. Kind of like handing a graphics artist a bag of parts and telling him he can now design and build his own amp. I could do it no problem, but the untrained would likely just burn the house down or electrocute themselves.

Okay, time for the next great idea.

two issues for me.

when i click on the theme editor help button i get an "unmanaged exception" dialog, so i can't access the help files.

i'm trying to change the labels for the pan, volume, and gain sliders in the track view and console view, but i don't know what these are called. right now they're a medium grey against the darker bg so i can't easily see them.

I reported this. I only get the error when running the theme editor from inside SONAR. Running the theme editor from the OS loads the pdf OK. I use FireFox for pdf viewing. I am not sure if that is the cause of the failure.

I've also seen unmanaged exceptions when pressing Help inside the Theme Editor. In addition, I ran into several exceptions when saving the theme. I thought this was because the same theme was still active in Sonar, but sometimes I would get a friendly dialog box warning that the theme couldn't be saved.  I was also running the Theme Editor from inside SONAR.

Hey, anyone know what file goes with custom buttons so I can make them black and not grey?
I'm guessing that it can't be done as the underlining color pallet seems to do some fine tuning of my files when I save them leaving them a lighter grey then black. Any ideas?
