When I come up with new icons, I send them to Cakewalk. Almost all of them have made it into the program. If you post a link somewhere I'll check them out, then alert the Bakers to get in touch with you.

I got most of them from the web (as in, for Massive, I use a picture of the Hulk, for BFD I have pictures of Peter Erskine and Dennis Chambers, for Trillian I have pictures of Charlie Haden, Ron Carter, Mingus, John Pattitucci, and Jaco, I've got various designs and a picture of a Blue Lantern for Blue, Herbie Hancock and a couple of geckos for Lounge Lizard and so on). I edited them all to size. All are .bmp in format.

I've started garnet red and green themes (two separate themes; I'm not hearing sleigh bells yet). Both are over a Tungsten background and look like they'll be pretty nice, though possibly more as something to switch to when one gets bored with one's main theme. Tungsten's background is really cool as it's so neutral. I seriously think someone could do a magenta theme and make it work. I'm not guessing when these will be finished, however.

Is there a built in way to mix and match or did you have to export and then import?

It is possible to have multiple theme editors open and copy/paste between them. To revert any custom element to Mercury, delete the existing custom image or reset the color setting.

Closing the loop. I've been using this theme for a bit now. The niggles I mentioned were mainly the difference between CV button states being too subtle. I've since made some display adjustments that have things looking really good. I've checked out some of the other colors ... I really like the purple colors, but this theme is overall easiest on the eyes for me. Readability, contrast, brightness, etc. are all well balanced. So this is the one I'm using for now. Thanks again for doing it and making it available.

I played around with the theme editor a bit last week and my observation is that I think it was partially released to show how complicated and difficult it is to produce a theme! :) This is not a knock on Cakewalk - this is just how it is. Changing a few colors is one thing, but actually developing a theme is something else. I do web design as a part of my business and we talk to people every week who believe it is "simple" to build a custom website, then they show us what they've done and tell us how much time they spent to get there: it looks bad and took 10s of hours to do and in the end, they determine that building a full site on their own is not for them. I am very familiar with my image editing software and I thought it was really cool that I could basically directly edit the graphics from the editor, save them back, and have them "live" in the editor. I thought that the most difficult part of this is the sheer number of items there are to edit and the fact that there are no "macro" level changes to make, like "make all of the button background look like this" and choose a color or make a gradient. It's a lot more piece by piece than that, and that can get tedious really fast. The same design principals apply here as with anything: know what you want to do before you just dig in and start changing things. Pick your color palette, know where the elements are that you need to change, and be complete. It's a LOT of effort. I think that this should bring a new level of respect to the creators of any themes, whether made by Cakewalk or by the community. Happy to see the option for those who want to really dig into the customization.
