There is no subscription!!!!!
All of you that keep saying there is a subscription when you buy the new Sonar are wrong! What CW is offering you is the choice to pay as you have always done the full amount for the upgrade or you may decide to pay a small monthly payment until it is paid off. This is no different from buying on credit for anything, your car your house or smaller purchasers that you wish to pay for over time. What CW is doing for the monthly payment model is extending you credit. What is so hard to understand about that?
In either case you will own the license and be able to use the software for as long as you wish.
This is a great idea and I support it completely. The fact one will be getting fixes and patches with new features for a year is much the same as it has always been. The angst being posted about this is unreasonable and ridiculous.

Actually it is a subscription for the first 11 months for those you do not buy up front.
And nothing wrong with that.
Of course, if you go 11 months, you'd have to be a bit crazy not to pay the 12th month as well, seeing that at that point you get to keep the product.

Unless you stop paying at month 11 and you revert to demo mode and you keep NOTHING. Why anyone would do that is beyond me but the fact is that is what would happen. In that case you "rented" it for 11 months and it was repossessed.

The fact one will be getting fixes and patches with new features for a year is much the same as it has always been.
Also, as I understand it, the individual fixes and patches will be coming sooner using C3.

I applaud your efforts John. I don't understand what is so hard to "get" here. Just for the record, the earth is round and orbits the sun. You may have to work hard to explain this as well.

Maybe they shouldn't have used the term "membership". Just announce the "new" Sonar (like Apple did with the iPad, not calling it iPad 3). They inform us that after you have paid upfront the normal $149 upgrade charge to purchase your own copy of the product, you not only get the announced new features, but during 2015 you will get the normal bug fixes/operation enhancements, AND brand new additional features at no additional charge for 12 months! Like a 2fer sale! Oh but wait there's more. You can also purchase this product on an installment plan! Just 12 easy payments of $14.99/month and the product is yours, and you get to use the new product while you are paying off the monthly payments! Walt

You have a valid point. The only difference is that that was under a different sales model and peculiar to publications. In software its closer to the normal notion of renting not subscribing. Why some marketing groups uses subscribe is their choice when it doesn't accurately describe the model they are using i.e Adobe. CW has not used that term so we have no reason to do so either. CW is not using a rental model either. That needs to be clear.

You are buying it but it will take all payments to be made before it is free and clear. That is very normal in the credit business. One cool thing as far as I know is CW is not charging interest.

I don't get your mink coat analogy. Well I do for buying something on an instalment plan (and in that case your wife will lose the coat if you don't make the last instalment, just like Sonar). But I was talking rental, which is something completely different. And as I realized, and said, it's interesting that Cakewalk does indeed now give you the option to rent Sonar for up to 11 months. CW sure is charging interest. More that 20%.

That's playing with words. Payment plans are always a lump sum or payments with interest. And Cakewalk's interest is hefty.

Well now, that is indeed a very interesting comment ! I wonder if Cakewalk thought if this, since they're promoting it as a payment plan. I wish they wouldn't, because it's a pretty bad plan. However, the same system is a very good rental or extended demo plan.

A program is the entirety of the model. In a rental program, you rent. Obviously this is not a rental program because at its conclusion, you stop "renting" and own the software. The closest you can come to a rental program is to call the monthly payment variation a "rent-to-own" program. But, you also don't have to choose that option. You can buy it outright and have a permanent license from Day 1. So the "program" really comprises choices, it is not just one model. You save money with quantity pricing. You can either make accounting deal with your account every month, or you can buy all 12 months at once and save money. It's like any store where you pay less if you buy things in bulk instead of singly.

Because at no point with renting will the renter ever own anything. That is not the case with the CW model.
