I don't have it, too. Bub, do you have a ATI ot Nvidia graphic card (like me). With ATI ou Nvidia card, you don't have the option in the Windows display settings (cf post 174), and i think that it is why we don't have it in Sonar. I'm running an Nvidia GeForce 9500 video card.

That is the point, i guess. The Windows 7 option about 'Graphics Hardware Acceleration' is not avalaible with Nvidia card (you can try it - cf my previous post, n° 174), so it seems logical that we don't have it in Sonar Preferences. Anyhow, i think it doesn't really matter.

The use graphics acceleration option is windows 8 only i believe. still if you are using a custom built computer it is worth double checking your memory voltages and timing settings as well as updating the graphics card driver.

I found that Sonar became infinitely more stable for me after I set up a separate user account dedicated to audio work. This second user account has no startup programs, no automatic file syncing going on and as much crap disabled as possible. I don't know much and I've never heard that or thought of it but it sounds like a great idea... I'm going to do that. Did you have to reinstall everything or just point import it to the new acct? OR what... Thanks for a great sounding idea! J

But you can have different Windows settings, for instance you can disable the Aero theme, or you can turn off your antivirus. Basically it's like having a new computer, except that you have access to the same programs and files as the other user account. If you open your C: drive, you'll see a folder called "Users." In this folder you'll see folders for all of your user accounts. In each of those user account folders, there are separate folders for documents, the desktop, downloads, pictures, videos etc. So one thing to remember is, if like me you have your "My documents" and "My Pictures" and "Downloads" folders located on your data partition instead of the system partition, you'll have to relocate these folders again for the new user account, otherwise they'll be on the C: partition by default. You may of course wish to have separate photo/download/document folders for the new user account, but I like both user accounts to share those folders. It's real easy to set up. Here's a quick guide: http://www.pcworld.com/ar...sers_in_windows_7.html

In Windows 8 there are Libraries that will consolidate all like folders. For example if you have more than one documents folder located on various disks Win 8 will create a library which points to all the documents in all the folders from place. Of course one can exempt a folder being placed in the library. Its an enormous time saver.

Thanks Sharke. I am going to do that tomorrow. Run that user with it always offline, no anti-virus, all the regular tweaks I use like no sounds, set to background services etc. I put all three of the links for W7 tweaks in a Favorites folder. When I looked at them it looked like I already pretty much use the Focusrite tweaks. Black Adder has a LOT, probably not needed. I have an e-sata port and am going to get a case that I can swap HDs in to use for projects and one for backup. I was thinking... what if I installed X2 and all the things I use with it, synths, midi, etc on that external drive and just run it all on that drive... I wonder if that would be something that would make a difference, especially if I set up a barebones user ID for it. Thinking outloud... My internal drive is a 500G 7200 RPM but I have not pushed it at all. I guess if I hit bumps I will do whatever I have to do. I am glad I read this thread. I've been wanting a Studiocat as a dedicated machine but something always seems to jump up and take the money. The time will come tough. Thanks for all the help! You too Bub. (I know you're a good guy)... BTW.. I sure do wish I had been paying attention when W8 was 40 bucks... I hope the price drops soon... and sharply. Julien

(I know you're a good guy)... BTW.. I sure do wish I had been paying attention when W8 was 40 bucks... I hope the price drops soon... and sharply. Julien I'm not sure, but I think you're limited in certain things that you can do. For instance, I don't think you can turn your internet connection to be off in one account and on in another. I'm pretty sure I tried that when I first did it. I'm also not sure about setting different service profiles. I always hated how you couldn't just save a service profile so that you could have different ones for gaming, audio etc. You would think there would be an app which let you set up and save service profiles but I cannot find one. However, I did read in a couple of places that you don't get much of a performance boost by disabling services, and that even when you disable the ones that the service guide labels as "unnecessary," you can set yourself up for all kinds of issues in the future because you never know what kind of hardware or software you're going to end up installing that might depend on one of these services. You might find that something you install doesn't work properly because of some "unnecessary" service you turned off months ago. So I just leave them all on. With regard to the external drives, I don't think you will enjoy any benefits from installing X2 on another drive. Your system drive is there to run apps off, it won't be any faster or efficient or trouble free on an external drive because the program will still be accessing exactly the same files - no more, no less. You'd be far better off using that external drive to record audio onto, or stream samples off of.

Please do not stop or uninstall antivirus. Just exclude cake folders and folders Microsoft recommends for exclusion (sorry you need to Google this) from real time antivirus scans. You should not need to disable internet either (this is really old school) unless your PC is underpowered.

@sharke You are indeed limited in Windows - I do not know if this has changed, but in Windows XP it had hardware profiles available, but there was not any built in Services profile, meaning I could not disable certain services for certain users. To get around this, I wrote a couple of dumb little C# programs to allow me to set up profiles of services I wanted to be able to turn on or off all at once - instead of manually doing it one at a time. I did this for back in XP on a 32-bit machine. Since building a faster machine, with tons of memory and 64-bit processing - along with Windows 7 then Windows 8, I have not had to go back and fiddle with any of the background services. My two dumb little programs are available to anyone who wants them. One controls services and the other controls start up items. Just send me a PM for them. Bob Bone

I really like Sonar X2….not here to bash it…but I will say this: It’s crashed on me twice this week alone, and it’s caused me to lose hours of material. After the first really time robbing crash last Tuesday, I wised up and setup the program to automatically save every 10 minutes. Unfortunately, that didn’t seem to do anything because it crashed again on me yesterday after about an hour’s use, and none of the work actually saved. When I rebooted everything I’d worked on at that point was lost AGAIN.....Oh, and I have a new HP computer and a Roland Quad Capture USB interface, and I have everything setup properly....even had a Sonar tech walk me through some of the deeper setups....so, I don't think that's the problem. I have been having terrible stability issues with X2 and X2A. I was fine with X1. It is now so bad that I have started to research Reaper. It is apparently very stable. I will be downloading the demo version this week. If it is any good, I will go that way. BUT I hate the idea of having to relearn a new DAW. I just want Sonar to work the way it used to!

It does sound like Reaper has a much better design philosophy when it comes to handling plugin crashes etc...from what I've heard a plugin crash or incompatibility will not cause Reaper to hang, instead Reaper identifies the problem and resets the plug while remaining stable itself. Not sure how accurate that is, just going by comments I've read from others. If that is the case then Cakewalk should definitely look toward following that path, because I'm sure a lot of these crashes are to do with instability in 3rd party plugs taking Sonar down with them.

I have heard that Midi implementation in Reaper isn't as good as Sonar. remains to be seen. Just hope it is intuitive with an easy learning curve. Just want to make music. Not have to contend with never ending crashes and computer maintenance issues.

sharke It does sound like Reaper has a much better design philosophy when it comes to handling plugin crashes etc...from what I've heard a plugin crash or incompatibility will not cause Reaper to hang, instead Reaper identifies the problem and resets the plug while remaining stable itself. Not sure how accurate that is, just going by comments I've read from others. If that is the case then Cakewalk should definitely look toward following that path, because I'm sure a lot of these crashes are to do with instability in 3rd party plugs taking Sonar down with them. Reaper crashes as much as any other DAW. From Sharke I have heard that Midi implementation in Reaper isn't as good as Sonar. remains to be seen. Just hope it is intuitive with an easy learning curve. Just want to make music. Not have to contend with never ending crashes and computer maintenance issues. Reaper's MIDI is very good and is quite usable. Its not as mature as Sonar's but it can do much the same things except there is no Staff View, no Step Sequencer and the like. Before the X versions of Sonar Reaper was a viable alternative to Sonar. With the Pro Channel and various other features there is no competition now. I think Reaper is as good as Studio One though. I own both. I use X2 for just about everything. The others just sit there not doing anything. But they look cool.

Not sure how accurate that is, just going by comments I've read from others. The VST thing I can confirm. I forget which VST I was using, but it crashed, Reaper put a message on the track that said it was not responding (or something to that effect), it reset the VST, and kept working. I didn't even have to close Reaper, it just kept chugging along like nothing happened after about 15 seconds. I know it was the VST that crashed for two reasons, 1: Reaper told me it was this particular VST by name, and 2: It crashes all the time in Sonar. I always freeze immediately when I use it. I don't know for sure if it responds this way to all VST's when there is a problem, but I can confirm it did in this case. Another thing you can do is, there is a setting you can check off in Reaper to help make unstable VST's work better. I haven't tried it because, well ... it's never crashed or given me any problems. If that is the case then Cakewalk should definitely look toward following that path, because I'm sure a lot of these crashes are to do with instability in 3rd party plugs taking Sonar down with them. The VST I was using was one that comes with Sonar ... but I can't remember if it was one they did themselves or if it was one of the 3rd party ones they use. Reaper supports VST3 ... maybe that has something to do with the fact that it was able to reset it like that? I was mistaken, it does not support VST3.
