As far as stability I don't agree. I havent had a crash yet (touch wood!) What I will say about X2 so far is that i'm seeing some strange quirky things happening intermittently. Yesterday I had some pro channel modules not load up, I've had some disappearing recorded clips, the now time display on the transport has gone blank intermittently, i've had loaded vst's not open the gui when clicked, just to name a few!! So I'm with you as far as an update, but for different reasons.

I had a lot of problems with X2a. After several re-images of my pc trying to get it to work which I didn't, I just stuck to X2 with no patches. I was going to go back to 8.5 or X1 but I decided to give it one more shot. So far it's working ok. At least I can can work with it now. I'm staying away from X2a. My buddy has been working with X2a with no issues for several weeks but now problems are creeping up one at a time. He's still able to work with it unlike I was but for how long no one knows. I know all software has it's issues, just go to Protools, Cubase etc. forums and you'll see but for something as simple and necessary as working level meters when recording and playback would be nice to have working consistantly. I can understand more intricate processes but the simple stuff should always work.

if you call saving every 5 min as a work around sorry thats not stable. and the issues with many sound cards across all platforms is not stable yes some have flawless work. but also i know some only buy things that are tested with sonar or use roland capture devices. if you use other daws and dont build your rig around sonar you will have drop outs lost audio before you eyes i swear i just recorded the best solo ever but sonar didnt like it so it didnt bother writing the audio of frezzing a intire world of unstablility comes with sonar if your not glued to the forum for every work around 90% of the reason all my friends wont touch x2 i have my finger on the forum so i get by, this forum is the only reason i still use cakewalk tec support is a joke. they spend a hour just to tell you buy somthing from roland this will fix your DAW i had lost my best client last year cus of the brick limiter. and no i never even payed for it or tryed it out, bus TS said its only fix was for me to buy the limiter.and this must have somthing to do with the demize of expanded now as i said i get threw projects .but never without 3-4 work arounds and most times i go back to 8-5 for sanity and il never open x1 or 2 in front of someone i wish to work for, does that sound stable. sonar x2 is x1 expanded fixed without the 100$ nonsence charge just to buy unsaveable Prochannel plugs. no templates with PC is a bad joke. il stick with IK and izotope for plugs and yes i like sonar it just dont like my hardware,

Sonar is only as stable as the computer you run it on. If you clutter it up with a lot of plug-ins that aren't fully tested, you will have problems. If you don't use a high quality audio interface with good drivers, you will have problems. You also need to periodically test your computer to make sure you haven't picked up a virus or malware. I was having crashing problems and I ran a FULL virus scan and it found a trojan horse malware and removed it. The QUICK virus scan did not find it. Any time your computer crashes or you have to power it off without a shutdown, you should scan your disk drive because it could have some corrupted data. I cleaned up a lot of junk plug-in I had collected and since then, Sonar X2A has been very stable. To the OP, if you were running autosave, you probably would not have lost 20 minutes of work, so that one is on you.

daveny5 Sonar is only as stable as the computer you run it on well your intire stament i agree with but this i have a daw, fresh install of windows, with no 3rdparty stuff but IK and izotope built and tested from the ground up with sonar and il still not a beliver its solid enough for prime time client work. im shure it will come around after 2 more updates . but as i stated, it just dont like some hardware that works great on other daws. period the end i have a second daw for testing and anything from maudio including delta 0404 0202 1010 all have issues with sonar, my main daw yes runs fine now thanks to this forum. but saying (Sonar is only as stable as the computer you run it on) is what TS is told to say when there stumped. and know they cant fix your hardware setup.sonar is special it only work with special hardware.5 years of testing on every low buget sound card includin UI tells me this. but yes all those things in your comment can give you more trouble too have a great day forum il be back after my 9 am session

SONAR X2A is pretty stable on my dedicated DAW, though I have seen some of the issues that others have seen. One stubborn issue I was having turned out to be an old version of a Voxengo plug causing problems. Once I updated that plug the issue went away. Regards, John

I think X2 is currently a bit cranky. Here's my favourite current one: pressing the expand button to show ProChannel on a bus. About 50% of the time, that's a total white out, restart-the-computer crash for me.

Regarding good save habits, I generally agree But on the other hand, it's 2013. 20 minutes is far below what I'd call a reasonable expectation for crash free up-time.

Yup I love my Saffire Pro 40. Stability wise. Run windows update. Update your PC chip set drivers. Update your sound, graphics drivers, music controllers, network card, every driver you can. Update your firmware everywhere and PC BIOS. Update and review your plugins. Run scan disk then defrag. If that doesn't work you need to do some tweaking. Leaving at that for now....

I have to wonder how many of these-it crashes everytime folks (not the op) have been forthcoming with the apps actually imnstalled on their daws. I actually never lost any work in over 7 years of using sonar on a dialy basis.. CJ Yeah Heroics ... this is the guy you want to be taking advice from. 4 hours a day for 7 years straight and "never" lost work? Sorry Cj, that's a crock of ****. Ever since this Skylight interface was introduced, Sonar has not worked right. It amazes me how the same 5 or 6 people always come on here and say how great it is and never crashes, and in their very same posts say, "Oh yeah, but I am seeing this bad thing happen, but Sonar works great, no problems" So, compare those 5 or 6 people to the long time forum members like me who have had nothing but headaches across multiple DAW's, all the people who were regular forum members that ditched Sonar that don't come here any more, and all the new people here lately showing up saying how many problems they're having with it, and pretty soon you start to see a very clear picture. I saw a long time forum member post here the other day and said he used V-vocal for the first time ... yet he's always saying how he doesn't see the problems that others do. Well that's because you don't use the damn program fully like the rest of us are. Not everybody has the disposable income to piss away on thousands of dollars worth of plug-in's. The reason most of us go to Sonar is because of the value of it with all of it's tools and extra's in the Producer Edition. So when you don't have thousands to piss away on software, or have enough responsibility to not use cracked software, you kind of take it personal when the software you paid $400 bucks for doesn't work the way it's advertised to work. If I would have known now what I knew back when this crap with the X series started, I would have stopped giving my money to Cakewalk, gave it to Reaper and spent the money I had left over on VST's that actually work. I realy think its a plugin messing with my setup .......just now Sonar ran over 9 hours ...no crash .............. and realy one must close ANY other aplications , chats , steam ,gaming programs ....´cause Sonar needs all the power of the PC .......................9 hours no crash ? nice I run nothing on my DAW other than drivers, Sonar, and Reaper. I can go for 9 hours with no problems, then all of a sudden it will start crashing like crazy. Especially when I try to use Screensets or Quick Grouping. I'm almost guaranteed a crash when use those two functions. Especially if I lock a Screenset. Steam is an incredible resource hog. I hate it and refuse to play games that utilize it. I understand why they started it, but it's even worse than i-Lok in comparison. I remember installing Half-Life 2. It took half a day ... then another half day to update Steam before I could play it ... then I got an error. So I went online and found a crack that let me play the game that I just spent $60 bucks for and said never again. I use Auto-Save and have it set to save every 60 seconds. I've said it before and I'll say it again, these threads would not exist if Cakewalk would enable Auto-Save by default. Auto-Save does not over-write your project file that you are working on. It saves that project under another name that is identicle to your project name except it has the words 'Auto-Save Copy'. When you are done working on your project, then you hit Ctrl-S to save the main project. You can also set up Auto Save to save multiple versions of the Auto Save file. I would recommend you don't use the 60 second time frame though. JohnT is absolutely right ... in this day and age of computing ... it is not unreasonable at all to expect to go 20 minutes without something happening to cause you to lose your work. I took the plunge and installed the A patch ... man am I regretting it and I won't even go in to details because I'm just so sick and tired of dealing with it. I firmly believe there is a toxic atmosphere at Cakewalk at the present time and the product is not being looked after as it should and that's why these patches are doing more harm than good. There's been some staff changes there lately and if you've ever been in a Corporate situation like that, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. If you haven't, well, you guys will see the response by the handful of people I was talking about before. Just keep watching the show ... I think it's going to be a very long time before Sonar gets back to the kind of stability we had prior to the X series. And even that wasn't so great ...

I found that Sonar became infinitely more stable for me after I set up a separate user account dedicated to audio work. This second user account has no startup programs, no automatic file syncing going on and as much crap disabled as possible. I'm pretty confident about Sonar not crashing these days and in fact have narrowed it down to a couple of things I can prepare for, e.g. inserting the Cakewalk tape sim on the master bus will always crash Sonar the first time I do it, so I save right beforehand (the second time I insert it, everything's fine).

Focusrite saffire pro. Make sure you have installed mix control 3.1. Make sure you DONT run FireWire legacy drivers in windows. Stable as a rock for me. If that doesn't work I place bets the issue is somewhere else (check my previous post). Ta

Hi Sharke, What is "Automatic File Syncing"? Never heard of it. Thanks, Bub There are various apps you can use to automatically sync folders to the cloud. For instance, Microsoft's Live Mesh (although they are phasing this out in favor of SkyDrive) and also Google Drive. You just choose which folders on your hard drive that you'd like to keep automatically backed up, and it uploads them to the cloud whenever you make changes to them. You won't notice a hit in performance in everyday computing, but it's not something that you'd want going on in the background when you're running a DAW.

Hi Sharke, What is "Automatic File Syncing"? Never heard of it. Thanks, Bub Hey Bub I have no issues as I always state, but that does not make me a bad guy./ It's just the truth. I've gone thru a cheap Maudio 2496 and now to a Echo Layla3G (last 2 years or so) I only use the features I need ti use. I don't use V vocal (i Have Melodyne) and I never even touched auto snap. Other than that I use everything. I will say since I went to an Intel SSD for OS I never see a hiccup. I am big into midi and softsynths-many at one time. I have lots of plugs but all well known and no freebies. Please don't group us all together. I am a retired Micrsoft Tech and I keep my stuff running smoothly. I am sorry that you and others have issues, but that does not make folks like me, John and Cj and others bad guys or Fanboize. Wish it worked great for all of us-but obviously it doesn't, whatever the reasons are.
