a) WRONG - Dell does NOT supply drivers for your sound card using for DAW purposes unless it is made by Dell. I'm not sure any of Dell's sound cards are up to the Spec Sonar requires anyway. b) WRONG - Cakewalk does NOT test every HP PC. Even the PC's they made THEY tweak for performance and stability like you should. They even wrote they did that. So they certify it. I will certify you if you like. Don't certify me I'm already certified ;) c) Yes Bub issues get fixed by magic and that's why manufacturers release firmware/driver updates, so people shouldn't install them. Those things fix nothing they are purely for show. d) Yes Bub that's right, Microsoft publish registry hacks all over their knowledge base articles so YOU shouldn't do it. e) Yes Bub that's right, Microsoft never ever releases patches that improve stability or performance. f) Yes that's why Cake's forums is full of stability and optimization tips, even in this very thread. People write them so people shouldn't read them. Time you stopped listening to the people who seem to tell you these things... Bub advice has already been given in this post. Over to you....

CakeAlexS I'm referring to things such as turning Aero off, turning off your Swap File, File Allocation Sizes, that kind of thing. All these things have no relevance in today's PC. You simply don't have to touch this stuff. Tweaking Sonar as in, adjusting buffer settings internally, that's another story. But we're not talking about Sonar, we're (or at least I) am talking about the traditional tweaks that have been put out there and compiled in to 'Tweak Guides' by vendors. They just aren't valid any more. Or, maybe they are and you are right, I listen to the wrong people on the forum and I should go in to my DAW and do all the traditional tweaks that I used to do.

I have no problem admitting I'm wrong on this. If you're telling me all the conversations here about tweaks not being necessary are wrong, well then maybe we should start a new thread about system tweaks so the conversation doesn't get lost in this crazy thread, and set the record straight ...

Bub the second you started playing with DAW's you ceased to become the average user. If you still wish to be an average user just play some video games and install Microsoft office. Don't bother using DAW's and do something else. Otherwise put all your effort reading about how to get your system stable rather than posting in these forums. There's a big wide internet out there that will help train you. These forums are a good start. Look are your specific hardware, software, drivers and firmware bit and bit and get it ALL updated for starters... Or just sit back and expect it all to work (it probably won't 100% of the time if you do that).... the choice is yours not our or Cakes. I sincerely wish you best of luck... thankyou for being polite throughout. Cheers Alex

Viper Tweaks? Focusrite Tweaks? Sweetwater's Windows 7 Optimization Guide? I can go on and on. Is the average user really expected to do this? If so, I think Cakewalk's DAW Lab 'Certification' is quite misleading. Anyway, I was hoping to get a straight forward answer as to whether I'm wrong or not. Like I said, if I am, I have no problem with that. In the meantime, anyone wanting to tweak till their heart is content ... follow the links above. I hope it does help some folks. Don't expect it to fix bugs mind you, but hopefully it will help your system. Thanks, Bub

That's not DAW tweaking. That is configuration. I though you said you weren't going to update your BIOS's and drivers as it's rocket science or something, and Windows update should never be run (good luck with that then)... ah well. Also try disabling CPU power management in BIOS i.e. Intel speedstep. There's one tweak for you. Plenty of others in the forums, I'm not going to spell all of them out again when google can do that for you.

I work with software where as part of the installation program, the first step is to check system prerequisites, such as UNIX kernel parameters, etc. to ensure optimal performance. Perhaps Cakewalk could employ more of this kind of thing as part of the Sonar installation process.

"Stability" means various things to different people. I think it means more than just not crashing. The program should function properly without hiccups or dropouts. I had recorded eight complete projects in X1, all of which ran flawlessly and were ready to allow many more tracks to be recorded. I opened each one of those projects in X2 and X2a, and saw significant performance issues in X2a. No more tracks could be recorded in X2a--immediate dropouts. (This was not the case for X2, which was buggy in other ways, mostly dealing with take lanes.) I do keep some unused tracks archived--just for kicks. I'd say I average about 20 tracks archived. My theory is that X2a cannot ignore archived tracks the way X1 (and X2a) could. Just a theory, but the fact is I can't use X2a to continue working on older projects. I'll see about new projects.

Sure, but it's not really the end user's job to stick to agreed QA and engineering terms. How could they even know what standards are being applied. End users are always going to talk in more generalised terms. Doesn't get us anywhere to get pedantic about it.

Fair enough John... But when I wrote stability I meant the true definition. I've got no issues with people wanting to call an apple a pear as long as they understand that the other person understands the apple is a pear... but that's er... that's when things get quite confusing esp in threads like these where multiple people are involved... that's why it's important to be as specific as possible and use the right terminology. Easier to call an apple an apple. It's not because everything has to be correct, it's about getting specific things communicated across that's all.

I might be wrong, but I think the working definition of "unstable" round these parts covers crashes and drop outs.

Still waiting to hear about these 'stability' ensuring, 'crash' stopping, 'bug' eliminating tweaks there Alex ol' pal. I've done everything you've suggested in this thread ... months ago. Are we down to component level replacement level? Exactly what do we need in our systems to run Sonar and avoid it's bugs if we can't even rely on the systems they recommend? Do I need to employ the skills of a hacker to decompile Sonar and reassamble it in a working fashion? ;)
