Since the August update, many projects will not load.

I have a feeling it's when there are missing plugins. Sonar freezes after the "Missing Plugins" screen appears.

Interestingly - I have a FaderPort attached, and it goes nuts at the same time. The fader moves up and down very quickly  about an inch, and the mute and solo buttons are flashing.

My faderport has done this after this and other upgrades when opening existing projects, too. I wiggle the fader, and the project opens, showing me what is hanging - usually some small difference in outputs that I can easily fix. The projects open fine after I re-assign these. Faderport is picky.

I can't believe it! This worked!

1) Thanks for the install fix (aka un-breaking it back to the way it was).  Sonar again "installs" on D:\ Music\cakewalk\Sonar - as directed.

2.  )  However, an OLD, VERY OLD complaint still persists on installation in general (doesn’t' matter if manual or via C3)

It would be really nice, especially for folks with SDD's (but no budget for terabyte and larger SDD's)  if  we could JUST get ALL of it (SONAR, Dim PRO, Rapture PRO, etc.) installed to the drive specified.  Not just a complaint about or to Cakewalk but ALL software  developers/manufactures.  Folks are moving to SDD's but because of current and recent past costs they moved to SDD's that are, or were,  in general SMALLER than the HDDs they replace - so slapping everything on the C: \  like it was an endless drive is not good.   Actually it was lazy and sloppy BEFORE use of SDD's but that's "water under the bridge," as it were.

There is no compelling need (post MS Win Vista) more than a FEW BYTE's onto boot drive.

Cakewalk updates and inserts a lot of stuff into windows registry:  pointing to all install locations, OS required registry info,  as well as CW embedded protections, etc.  But other than the short cut to "sonar.exe"  on "C:\"  in the Start Menu there doesn't really need to be more than that?  If users want stuff 100% of Sonar all on C:\   that's there prerogative.

when I've had to re-install Dim Pro or CW Studio Instruments (becasue of new OS or other reasons like when CW updates re-install SI's) I still have to manually move the multi-sample libs to another drive then hack registry to tell Dim Pro and SI's where they are at,   a user should never have to hack registry to move ANYTHING)

The base program itself (SONAR), with zero add-ons/add-ins, installs as much, if not more, on C drive then on drive where it's pointed to:

C:\Program Data\Cakewalk\
C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\
C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\
C:\Cakewalk Content  ;   while it's just a log file, why is it needed? - Registry KNOWS where the full Cakewalk Content folder is.
C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk;
C:\Users\{username}\Documents\Cakewalk;
C:\Users\All Users\Cakewalk

Probably a few I'm forgetting

Thanks ahead of time for ANY consideration on this topic in some future major update/release of Sonar and ALL cakewalk products (DP, RP, MC7, whatever)

Multiple crashes with the new update!  I used it for maybe 15 minutes & rolled back.  I had a client with me so didn't have time to troubleshoot.  The final straw was when I tried to bounce a melodyne clip.  It crashed & when I restarted, Sonar wouldn't open the project.  After 4 or 5 tries I gave up.

Re: SONAR 2016.08 Update Now Available 2016/09/02 12:15:13 (permalink)
"In development."

I know. I've known for about ripple delete for about a year. They keep coming out with fluff instead of fixing what was broken (delete hole and ripple edit), and everyone is falling all over themselves congratulating each and every upgrade. Frustrating to see when, as a loyal customer since DOS days, my bug report submissions regarding delete hole (ripple edit) go unanswered and I feel like my hard-earned money goes for naught.
I've seen the workarounds to delete hole (ripple edit) and to utilize a bunch of convoluted type of solutions such as "copy a dummy clip in the empty space, then delete hole (ripple edit)" is not a serious option in my workflow. Productivity would grind to a standstill if I had to delete hole (ripple delete) in this manner. Easier to use an older version to delete hole (ripple edit) until they decide to fix some real "under the hood" issues, like delete hole (ripple edit) instead of fawning over visuals and fluffy crap to attract more hobbyists.

I know I'm not the only one who desires they "fix" the delete hole issue (or as the new functionality will be called ripple edit).

Lance Riley, Cakewalk techs, Craig Anderton are you listening? If there is no concrete answer to the delete hole (ripple edit) broken functionality, please do not attempt to placate me through empty promises that delete hole (ripple edit) is "in development." This I know. Just do me (and all of us who desire a fixed delete hole (ripple edit)) a favor and put it under "Fixes" in bold type that either "delete hole is fixed" or "ripple edit replaces broken delete hole functionality."

Thanks in advance.

Geez...   I don't think I could ever approach qualifying the last year's worth of updates as "fluff".   Not even remotely close.   But as with all things, YMMV.

FWIW I completely understand why this is an important issue, and yes, I've been affected by it as well (though not often).  But as I understand it they're going for a broader, and in the end more useful, set of changes vs fixing a specific bug that would only need to be changed again.   I'm more than curious to see what the end result will be, but with something this deep I'll take "better" over "quicker".     Again, YMMV.

Fix For Crash:  I got the latest build working on my computer.  I ran Sonar through VS2015 and discovered it was failing on a Sqlite call (at least that's what was reported).  I removed the SqLite version (.Net managed code version) at the location it was pointing to...for me I uninstalled AlienRespawn.  It's now working.

I hope this helps others...

Hi Noel,

I was running the new update 1 and it was still crashing.  It was hitting the Sqlite assembly that was installed by AlienRespawn (Dell product).  Maybe your installer didn't include the updated Sqlite?  I'm guessing since I don't have access to the code :)...but VS2015 pro running the executable was pointing to an invalid operation on that DLL Assembly located in the AlienRespawn installation directory...which meant that was the authoritative install of Sqlite.  Removing it fixed the issue.

Mike

The NEW plugin layout and parsing feature is GREAT!! Fantastic work....we needed this ability to quickly and effectively sort plugins. The ability to view at a glance the manufacture, version and bit processing depths is HIGHLY welcome from my perspective and will save me MUCH time and confusion; where and when I need to know what plugins I need in various workflow scenarios.

Thanks again,

Thanks for the info. It sounds like a bug in their assembly. Can you share information on how we can try it out - is it downloadable?

When I updated to 2016-8 I experienced two different types of crashes:
    1. Those of the "white-out" variety.
    2. Starting Sonar would occasionally cause the computer to reboot.

After updating to 2016-8 update-1 the first type of crash hasn't been seen, but I didn't use Sonar all that much.

If I were to run Sonar for awhile then shut it down but leave the computer running, then when I start Sonar back up, it reboots the computer for me.

Moreover, the Edit>Preferences>VST Settings to recycle VST windows no longer has any effect.  I can't have two VSTs on screen at once, a sure workflow speedbump.

I rolled back to 2016-7.  I don't know about crashes yet, but Recycle Windows remains broken.

Good news Noel.  I installed the latest version of ReSpawn you have posted above and there are no issues.  I suspect you are correct...they probably had a bug in their assembly or were using an older version and maybe some newer features were not available.  They also had it installed in their local directory.  It seems to be gone in the new version.  I searched my system and there are no longer any traces.  So maybe you ask dell for an older version (I purchased December 2014) or you just advise anyone with ReSpawn uninstall and install the latest version.  I'm still confused as to why their older assembly would override yours after update?  It was definitely there in the callstack and I verified it was using the one in the ReSpawn install directory.

FYI...it happened on project load only, not application load.  So I was able to start Sonar, but not load project.  Also, I was able to see the project load right before the access violation message.  So hopefully that helps zoom into the code location.

In Piano Roll view, the controller pane shows that the pedal events were recorded, but the events were assigned to CC:66 - sostenuto.

SONAR just records what the controller sends. I'm guessing that when you swapped pedals, you plugged it into the Sostenuto jack. If your controller has only one pedal jack, it must just be configured to send CC66 - check the Oxygen user manual.

In any case, it's highly doubtful that his has anything to do with the update.

You are quite right. I should not have blamed SONAR - turns out the Oxygen 88 controller was defaulting the sustain pedal to CC 66 even with a factory reset.  After manually re-assigning the pedal to CC 64 and to toggle between values 00 and 127, all is good.

I went into command center and saw that after i did a system restore a few weeks ago that Sonar was on the May update. I updated to the latest around Noon, (now 12:45pm)  I've been doing the exact same things I was to cause the crash and haven't had any of those crashes yet.
If so you know i'll report back lol.
