I have been debating as to whether or not I should bring this up for fear of offending any guitar-playing Neanderthals, but here I go. My concerns at this point is the so-called improvements in X1c that have been touted didn’t include more loops for me to layer in my “techno” tracks. I don't write or produce guitar-based or buttrock tracks but every once in a blue moon. How is that for an old saying. And, how was that for asking a question without using a question mark? I use Sonar to basically layer one loop on top of another and call it all “techno”. While I do use the occasional correct terms for music made with synthesizers and drum machines once in a while, my modus operandi tends to be stereotyping everybody else as being inferior to me, since I do have a degree in music theory/composition, but, like all “techno” producers, I tend to just play with loops because I’m too stupid and lazy to think about scales or chords, and it would be so much easier for me to make my awesome choonz if Cakewalk would just quit catering to the lowest common denominator classic rockers and give me more loops. While hanging out at Guitar Center playing “Smoke on the Water” or “Sweet Home Alabama” and impressing classic rock hippies with my awesome chops on occasion is fun, it is not my main hobby and I would like Sonar to stop making it so easy for guitarists, drummers, and bassists to correct their awful timing with AudioSnap, or add yet another boring classic rock piano part with one of the included instruments, and focus their attention on giving me more free loops. I am not so uber-advanced that I would say I will never use these features. I just don’t find them to include enough loops for me to make “techno.” My techno-budz, other than the few stoners who drop E and accidentally listen to Pink Floyd from time to time, will not be thrilled about…well, anything. They just aren’t that easy to thrill unless they’re stoned out of their gourds, ya know? Their reaction will be, like," whoa….wtf brah...bad trip, dude." BTW, I like Smurfs. All I'm saying is it seems to be that Cake is trying to appeal to people who make both kinds of music – techno and classic rock. I wish they would take into consideration there are still those of us out here that need more loops, as opposed to every person who picks up a guitar and is instantly blessed with the gift of being a superior "traditional" songwriter from the almighty RnR gods. Give us synths that make music for us, too, please. I hope I have offended you with this post because I am very concerned that those of us who need more loops are being overlooked for the old hippies who hang out at GC playing the same old worn-out crap from the 70s that every 5 th grader learns when they buy their first guitar and that nobody wants to hear anymore anyway, then making gross generalizations about music forms that they obviously don’t even listen to, let alone understand. They just turn off their brains, call it all techno, and assume that it’s all made with loops by producers who haven’t mastered the harmonic and melodic complexity of such musical masterpieces as “Smoke on the Water”.

Very nice! Never had the pleasure to have actually played Smoke on the Water. Maybe you could teach me. As for Sweet Home Alabama, I think I heard it a few times. As for Guitar Center never did business with them. I only deal with stores that actually hire people that know about the products they sell. Well, I guess I'll go listen to my favorite Yanni record. I wish you luck with the much needed music lessons you so richly deserve! The forum seems to be filling up with people who feel threatened by someone who actually has some music education!

Yoropal.... At first I thought X1 was horrible. How dare they change my GUI, the one I grew to love and hate but the one I knew how to use. However, I forced myself to use X1 and now after months, I don't think I want to go back to 8.5.3. The question was asked what can't you do with X1 for a traditional music writing/recording projects... for me, NOTHING... it does everything I need it to do and a lot more things that I will never use. The first few versions had quite a few bugs but with the latest HOT FIX, everything seems to be working fine (except for the occasionally, NOT RESPONDING message when I am working to fast for it to keep up with me.... just kidding but it happens less often now than before). I still have to search for a feature here and there but when I find where they hid it now, I seem to remember for next time so there is a lot less HUNTING going on for me as well. I guess the only feature I miss is editing in the PRV when if you inserted a new note, it remembered the length of the last note edited without having to set the note length ahead of time. I also remember spending like an hour to find the non-existent synth edit view... hehehehe. But now, with being able to anchor VSTs and other windows into the FLOATING DOCK thing, having all my synths as tabs in the mixer (console view) is a blessing. What does this have to do with X1C, not much except that I have faith in the bakers that they also tweaked the main engine here and there using the "might as well" approach and it will make X1 even more stable. Wow, I'm an old guitar playing hippie (although I've never been to a Guitar Center), and I thought this was funny as hell. I've been one of the lucky few (apparently) who hasn't had any major issues with X1. Prolly because I mostly make analog based music (you know, guitars, basses, vocals, etc.) and as it has been pointed out to me MANY times on this forum if you ain't using midi with 26 instances of Dim Pro and 17 of Rapture then you aren't using SONAR to it's full extent so you can't possibly know what it's like to REALLY USE Sonar (pause for a deep breath, how's that for a run-on sentence?) Just as an observation, though, I find it kinda...funny...this situation where most folks are divided between the suppossed X1 "fanboys" and the die hard "give me rock solid 8.5.3" bunch. I mean, I've been using Sonar for about 8 years now (since Sonar 4) and it seems to me that 8.5.3 is really just a culmination of all the versions of Sonar with a number after it. All the versions had problems and bugs when first released, along with the newest bright shiny baubles. And the releases were all followed by griping and groaning on these forums along the lines off "I don't care about the new toys, just give me something that works". And eventually Cake did just that. Patches, upgrades, etc. fixed most of the problems for most of us (well, except for the scoring part, I guess, but secretly to myself I don't think that will ever be made right. Hell, a third of the members of this forum would have no reason to speak up and we can't have that!) And I think Cake will do the same with X1. They'll eventually nail it. And like Yorolpal and others have mentioned, this is the direction of the future so why not go with it. Or not. That's the beauty of the thing I guess, you pays your money and makes your choice. But what do I know, I'm just a guitar playing old hippie. Oh, BTW, I just completed the first section of my FIRST film scoring project. Has Dim Pro and Rapture and loops and everything! And X1 handled it like a champ.

Sidroe The forum seems to be filling up with people who feel threatened by someone who actually has some music education! Nope, if you'd been around longer than a few months you'd have noticed the trend of people that come on here thinking they are the schnizz, finding out (supposing they do acquire just a modicum of humility) that they are not worthy of tieing the laces of some of the company that hangs around here, usually remains fairly constant over time. In your participation here on this thread you've just roundly confirmed yourself as being just another in a long line of those individuals. And please in future could you just make better use of a mirror as your avatar obviously doesn't look as good to me as it does to you... Thanks. I don't think there are going to be many here that will feel threatened by you Mr Sidroe, ever, although I can see quite a few enjoying the fresh candidate for some of that ol' entertainment factor. That choice will be yours to make.

I myself have over 40 years in music. Over 30 in studio and live performance.I know the dedication it takes to make a living doing this. I have been lucky enough to never have worked a day job to support my music habit. Music has been my source of income since I was old enough to sign a contract without a parent's permission. If you wish to dismiss me as an old guitar playing hippie that is your choice. BTW, I play over a dozen different instruments. BA, as well. I have only joined the forum as of late because I watched and did not participate for years. The studio I worked in was built around Cakewalk products since PA9. The info that we all get here is a blessing. I find it a shame that someone comes under attack for asking for some attention on features that we use that does not include what some of the guys use as far as loops ,matrix, step seq., etc. If you read my original post,I have tried to be respectful. I even agree with some of the looping factors. I work with every format under the sun. I never said my way was better, or anyone elses for that matter. I teach as well. Any tool that can be used to open up the world of music to me is a gift from God. AGAIN, I say, if you find offense, I apologize.

Alot of folk really don't understand that a loops are not just strung together. They are chopped, cut, modulated filtered, processed, bit crushed etc etc etc and ultimately changed to resemble nothing like their original state, length, sound or groove in many cases. This is a musical talent beyond simply playing a guitar. Now saying that, playing a guitar with originality style and creative expression is like creating an instruments part from a loop origins. Both when done well provide great instrumentation, both when simply played in a loop like fashion suck. Props to both sets of musicians. Let's all put our handbags away, respect each others differences of opinon, and sit in awe that others create and record award winning, genre defining music using many different techniques around the world. I like music created from all different approaches.

Jonbouy I don't think there are going to be many here that will feel threatened by you Mr Sidroe, ever, although I can see quite a few enjoying the fresh candidate for some of that ol' entertainment factor. That choice will be yours to make. Exactly. Nobody feels "threatened" by people with "some music education." Personally, I just get very annoyed when people claiming to have "some music education" use that as an excuse to dismiss, patronize, or make erroneous blanket statements, regarding musical styles that they don't prefer (hence my sarcastic post above). The many talented musicians and music educators that I have had the pleasure of working with or knowing over the years would never be so condescending, and would certainly never display so much arrogance or ignorance toward another genre, because they are educated enough to know how much discipline and practice it takes to become proficient and rise above the crowd in any musical form or instrument. And, not everybody is striving to be the next Sidroe. The world is full of kids and adults learning music at their own pace, whether it's a middle school kid striving for 3rd chair clarinet, a middle-aged father hoping to learn drums to play with his buds in a garage band, or a college kid learning to make trance songs to play in his DJ sets - it should all be celebrated, not sneered at by elitist snobs with "some music education."

Point completely missed. 1. I think my BA in music theory/composition and nearly 20 years experience as a studio and live musician (bass, keys, vocals, sound and light engineer), not to mention 20 years as a bass instructor, might qualify as having "some music education." 2. Stereotypes suck. We're way beyond stereotypes here... More like 7.1types! Keni

Sidroe I myself have over 40 years in music. No offence taken here bud, and I don't mean any offence at all when I say you are coming over as a complete wanker, and I apologize if it comes across that way. It isn't my intention at all.

Sidroe was somewhat offensive and rude, but others are now being just as if not more rude. (I did appreciate the Brit cold dry humourous delivery). Guys, girls, aliens and people named Kevin lets behave.... Amy died.

Sidroe If you wish to dismiss me as an old guitar playing hippie that is your choice. If you read my original post,I have tried to be respectful....AGAIN, I say, if you find offense, I apologize. I don't dismiss you as an old guitar playing hippie - you obviously did not read the sarcasm in my post that was meant to show how foolish making such stereotypes make us look. And, no, implying that people who make "techno" aren't musically educated was not respectful and not even any more correct than my sarcastic response. Regardless, apology accepted as far as I'm concerned. Let's move on.

jkleban ...I guess the only feature I miss is editing in the PRV when if you inserted a new note, it remembered the length of the last note edited without having to set the note length ahead of time... Side note, Jim - Editing in the old PRV was much easier, faster, intuitive et al (IMHO)- But in X1, you don't need to set the note length ahead of time. You can just go ahead and insert notes, and make it a two part move - insert, then immediately drag it to whatever length you want. Notes in a passage are often of very different lengths from each other anyway - with the Grid off, you can make that 2nd move to change the length exactly the way you want. - I think it's a smoother work flow than tediously selecting a note length before you insert each time. Sidroe Very nice! You're making an absolute huge assumption there. There are quite a few very knowledgeable musicians here. But regardless, there's no need for musical elitism. I've seen humans who have never read a music book, never took a lesson on any instrument - do incredible music. Isn't THAT what matters? OR is patting oneself on the back more important?
