Yes - associate it with the TRACKS - would be a great option.  Sometimes I have tons of clips on one track and it is a pain.   Still a great DAW and I love it.  But this would knock it out of the park IMHO.

Yes you can manually set colors for each clip individually in the inspector but as has been stated it will revert back to the default when you bounce.  It's also very slow and tedious.  I like my colors associated with track numbers like in 8.5.  If I could at least make the clip backgrounds colored and the waveforms black I'd be good, (set them in preferences and be done with it).  I was so looking forward to the track/bus color feature...

Another annoying thing: changing clip colour doesn't change the colour of the notes displayed in Piano Roll View.

This somewhat contentious thread actually brought a smile to my face.

The only way I know to change all clip background colors simultaneously is with select All and then change one in the Inspector; they all follow. I've never been that interested in changing them, though; the selected Clips matter to me the most. I kind of want the non-selected clips not to draw my attention.

You can make all the foreground waveforms the same color (e.g., black per Mike) in preferences, but if you change the track color manually, you'll override the Preferences setting.

You can change the Clip View background color to anything you want in Preferences. In the screenshot it's gray. The only fine point is that there are separate entries for View Background (Even) and View Background (Odd). So if you want the same background color for all tracks, you have to enter it twice. There's also a preference for changing the area below the clip view. In the screen shot, it's a darker gray.

The Selected Clip in the screenshot has a yellow background, as chosen in Preferences.

Yea, I know about this, but like I said in previous posts, it is not as good as what was previously in Sonar X2 and prior.  Why on earth did they actually REMOVE the color preferences for clip backgrounds in the color preferences area?  It makes no sense.

And like I said, every time you bounce a track or record a new one, it doesn't use the same color that you set.

I really don't like this method, so for me, I will not be purchasing Sonar 2015 until this is added back.  Sonar X3 and duckbar for now :(

Re: Will The New Sonar Change The Clip BACKGROUND Colors? 2015/01/18 01:13:08 (permalink)
Well... In my opinion the bottom line is that they want to gently encourage you not to change the clip background color.

You've got frozen tracks; muted clips; clips not in solo'd tracks; regionFX clips; selected areas of clips... there's just so many subtle color hints that ideally need to work together to convey meaning to the user - especially new users.
It's so easy to screw that up by color customization. Also, you've got the "track follows bus color" feature that is pretty nice.

Also, there's the whole "let's differentiate our look from the other major DAW offerings" which mostly seem to use color background and black waveform'd clips.

I'm in the group of folks who prefer "black wave on color clip" but I appreciate the reasons why the change was made for X3.

In my experience so far, it's been more rewarding to not fight it, but just go with the flow, and get used to the dark clip and light waveform appearance. I actually prefer it for MIDI clips. I like the colored notes on dark background, especially when I have multiple tracks selected in the PRV and the colors match the track view.

so you like a limit to be placed on intelligence and people who understand how to set their colors and also to play into a marketing-ploy to make the product stand out?

Saying that he finds the colors well-thought-out, despite some reservations, is not quite equivalent to liking a limit placed on intelligence.

All I can say is as soon as I prepared the screen shot in an attempt to be helpful, I started losing the cursor in the gray background, said screw it, and went back to the defaults, which have always worked well for me. Someone put a whole lot more thought into those colors than I do when attempting customizations...although I do like my lime sherbet meters.

Anderton,

What I meant was, it's all great Cakewalk likes this black clip background, but *I* don't, and why did they take that option away?

If Microsoft followed the same logic as Sonar, we wouldn't be able to change our wallpapers!  Sorry, but the rolling green hills is good for everybody!

I don't know. I suppose I would care more if it mattered to me. Color customization became much less limited between X1 and X3. I haven't delved into platinum enough to know if there has been an incremental increase of color options between X3 and Platinum.

It became less AND more limited.   For some reason, they decided with Sonar X3 to remove the option for coloring your clip backgrounds by track color (but left the foreground colors in place) - if that makes any sense.

It seems like a small issue, but it is a big issue for me.  I have eyesight issues and coloring the tracks allows me to sit longer without straining myself, and helps me organize my song better.

Look at my sample picture that I have setup using Duckbar compared to the colors Cakewalk tries to keep you with (see 1 page back I believe).  So much easier on the eyes.

Yes, it seems like a small issue, but I can assure you it isn't for me, and is literally holding me back from purchasing this week.

Since there are some people like me that would like it to apply to a track, including new clips to be recorded on that track (without always having to select those clips and change it) --
The question is ---is this a hard thing for the Cakewalk people to do in an update?  I do not mind paying for it.
Is it cost prohibitive somehow, or are they worried about other bugs by having this feature?

Even if only 1/3 of the people care about this, if it is not an easy fix, why not do it?  I suspect it may not be easy.

It's amazing that they actually REMOVED this!  It was in X2

Right, so set colors in X2, export the file and import to X3 or Platinum.

Guitarpima is visually impaired and finds the coloring difficult to deal with as well. So I know it's an issue for some people. I have no idea how difficult or easy it would be to change, but one of the open positions at Cakewalk is for a Senior Software Engineer and the first requirement for experience is "Modern UI." So the answer might be as simple as they don't have anyone on staff who specializes in UI design right now, which I assume is what you would need for something like this.

Having black clips everywhere kinda sux.   Before Sonar X3 you could adjust the background color of a clip, but X3 removed that.   I wish when coloring a track, it would change the BACKGROUND, not the FOREGROUND (notes).

You can change the background color of any clip. Go to the clip inspector and it's right there. :)

When Dan said the above was he referring to new Sonar MAYBE. I haven't done any color editing yet as I usually rely on my Duckbar color scheme and that's enough for me. Has anyone with the new Sonar tried it to see if the change in Clip Inspector is permanent?

Re: Will The New Sonar Change The Clip BACKGROUND Colors? 2015/01/18 05:42:19 (permalink)
Out of curiosity, is it purely colours that is the problem? Or is it magnification?

What I mean is would it be more beneficial to have colours with everything at the same size? Or would it be better to have an option that has a scalable magnification zone around the mouse pointer? And what I mean by scalable is that the user can define how large the area of the magnification is that surrounds the mouse cursor. As in you could have a rectangle magnification zone that could potentially take up to a third or even half of your screen real estate, if you so defined the option?

Also I would imagine that this feature would be able to keep the mouse pointer in the centre of the magnified zone until you hit the edge of the screen and then whether it is top, bottom, left or right, the mouse pointer would move until it reached the directional confines of the screen, whilst still maintaining the magnified zone above, below and to the left or right of the pointer.

Thoughts?

I have tested it.
At the moment you can import an old "Color set file" from X1 or X2.
I got my white clips back. By bouncing audio the clips are white.
But you cannot edit the colors within the new sonar.
They stay as imported from X1 or X2.
Maybe this helps a little bit.

@ alewgro

Adam, first off, my apologies for regurgitating the duff info regarding changing clip background colours using the Clip Inspector.

The last few posts in this thread have made me realise that my background colours are indeed a legacy of the Colours profile I created in X2. I honestly didn't even know that facility had been removed in X3 and now in Plaitinum, hence my confusion.

My eyesight too is not wonderful - generally speaking I start to struggle in low light conditions, but specifically I have a big problem with discerning low contrast views and images. As you will no doubt understand, the original X1 colour scheme consisting of little more than a homogenous sea of various shades of grey was a nightmare for me.

Currently, I find the almost unnoticeable colour/contrast changes that indicate which track is selected in the Track View Pane to be a big problem. Back in 8.5, I had the colours set up so that when I selected a track, the result was a virtual 'negative' of everything else on the screen, not just for the Track Pane itself, but for any Clip/s selected in that track. In this example, the grey background of Track 12 turns yellow (and the Track number goes bright blue), and the clip background turns black with a yellow waveform:

With X2 onwards, I've refined my templates with the (extremely useful) ability to colour code tracks and busses, all geared up to help me discern various parts of the GUI more easily (Drums = Blue; Demo/Scratch Track = Brown; Bass = Black; Rhythm Guitars = Red; Lead/Harmony Guitars = Green; Master Bus = Yellow):

As far as making it more obvious to discern selected tracks and clips, I've tried to accomplish something akin to the way I had it in 8.5, albeit with the added advantage of colour coding.

By default (and what I must have set up pre X3), all the audio track clip backgrounds are yellow, and the waveforms follow the track colour. When a clip is selected, the header turns blue and the background goes light blue. The only way I've found to accentuate the colours/contrast in the Track Pane is to have the track's number go bright yellow. I'm afraid that the current set up whereby the name of the track changes from to just isn't good enough for me.

Here's how a selected clip/track appears in a project:

Having the ability to have the track pane change colour to mimic the selected track/clip colour would be nice:

I actually was unaware - until this thread - that ANYTHING was removed from X2 to X3.

Why ?

Because I've been using Duckbar since X1. Again with zero errors.

Thanks for these screenshots.  Some useful ideas here.   Sorry if I was getting frustrated... I was getting tons of messages about the inspector view when I had already posted numerous times that it is not good enough.

And yes, I'm glad im not the only one who agrees this gray on gray really stinks lol.

I actually was unaware - until this thread - that ANYTHING was removed from X2 to X3.

Why ?

Because I've been using Duckbar since X1. Again with zero errors.

Well it wont support Sonar 2015 until much later in the year.

It's amazing that they actually REMOVED this!  It was in X2

Right, so set colors in X2, export the file and import to X3 or Platinum.

That's what I did.

but then you have to import ALL colors, no?

Yes. If you have customizations in X3/Platinum that were not in X2, you can export/import the other direction before setting background colors.
