Plugin Inventory
Hey folks, Is there any way to take a plugin inventory other than counting and writing? Is there some sort of tool that does this? Not into writing down, like, 275 plugin names. Thanks!

Not sure how useful it is but using the with the "Default All Plugins" layout selected, open "Manage Layouts" for FX and synths and save the layouts. This will product XML files of all the plug-ins which can be viewed in a browser. Other than that, all the data in the registry. Anything in particular you are looking for? It might be something which could be scripted.

Alternatively, you can often extract text from images. It's not a perfect solution, but it works fairly well. If you have MS One Note, that's what I usually use to extract text from images.
StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen. I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Yea. And how many do actually we use? I install everything. Occasionally I attempt to learn about some of them. But I then come back to the Sonitus tools. And I use the old amp sim a lot. Getting good with a few tools saves time. Which is all there is. But ya can't tell young people that. They won't believe ya.

I've got over 400 installed (64 bit), I use a couple regularly but... There's always that one sound that you just HAVE to get. I've bought expensive guitars just to get to play a part that I thought was cool. I've got Rick's, Strats, Tele's, Les Pauls, Flying V's, Baby Z's, a Dano Bari, a P-Bass, a closet full of stomp boxes, and a spare bedroom full of guitar amps. It's the same thing. You may end up using something once, but if it gets you to where you want to go it's probably worth it. Depends on your ear.

I wrote a plugin inventory program that reads the registry, gets version and vendor information from the DLLs and places the results in an Excel spreadsheet, but it only runs on XP. I'll have to dig that project up and see why it didn't work on 64-bit OSs, now that I'm running a 64-bit O/S. Maybe it'll run as-is in compatibility mode, I'll check.

OK, it appears I've been able to make it work for 64-bit installations. At least, it works here for me. If anybody's game to give it a try, PM me your email address and I'll send you the executable.

Bit, if you can get it working x64 I'll write an enthusiastic review and you can sell boat loads of this app at half off the regular price.

Telling people they are wasting their life time seems like a waste of life time, to me at least. And I'm wondering, why is 30 the "right" number? Isn't 29 one better? And if so, 28 seems even better/less waste of life time. But, if 30 is the right number you better harp on CW for selling a Producer version. IIRC it comes with more than 30 plugins (since a VSTi is a plug in too).

Why more than 30? Both music, and music production workflow, can be a personal thing. What sounds or feels better can change from one song to another.

YouDontHasToCallMeJohnson Also: using more that about 30 plugins: you are wasting your life time. Different things for different projects. I have a vast array of genres I work in for different projects and use way more than 30 quite a lot. There are some I will always return to for 90% of my projects such as Omnisphere and Spaces but to say more than 30 is wasting your life is a vast overstatement. ;) Plus, I think I've just added VMR to my list of "always use" plugins. I'm sure if I pick up the new FabFilter Total bundle, a lot of those will be added as well.

(Time to pull a rabbit out of my hat.) (23 is the answer to everything.) I did a quick count of the last few projects and found I am using about 15 regularly. I figger dudes who are working with audio more than me prolly use about 2 times as many. And, as THE CRAIG has written, nearly all the plugs we have had for years do much more than at first seems. So, my suggestion is to learn how to do more with less, and hence save the life-time of searching for hours to get stuff, and then spending lots of hours attempting to learn them, and then maintaining them, and then abandoning just when the learning has begun. I have purchased 3rd party plugins such as Kantos, and Ozone (still v.3), and VSampler 3, and various samples, and other bits I gathered along the journey. But I mostly use the stuff included with Sonar 1-X3: DP, SD, Rapture, Zeta, Sonitus EQ, reverb, modulator, gate, compressor, Perfect Space, Boost, and CW Amp Sim (a lot). I have Guitar rig in a few projects, but not for guitar. Most of the guitar is recorded from the amps. No doubt Breverb, and AD, and Overloud, and all the new plugs from the last 3 Sonar versions are great. But I have limited time. If I can get more from Sonitus Reverb then I have spent less time and know more. (My favorite big reverb is PS with a forest impulse, followed by PS with a canyon, cave, or cooling tower impulse.) What I have read in the Sonar forums for the past 12+ years is the included plugins, effects, and synths, can do just about everything most of us need. No doubt Waves, and UA, etc are great. And no doubt some of you guys have them. But, how many individual plugins do you use regularly?

I think there is a huge difference between regular use and specific use. For instance, like I said, I use plugs like Omnisphere on nearly everything because it's so diverse and powerful. I'm starting to use Serum a lot as well because the sound design capabilities are so incredible. However, I'll use something like East West Silk on some of my more Asian inspired projects which is something I wouldn't typically just throw into another project unless some strange inspiration hit. It's still good to have on hand because if I need it, it's there. Because I have been working on a bit more Asian inspired stuff lately, I'm also looking to pick up Embertone's Chang Erhu since I'll get a ton of use out of it and it's very nicely sampled. I'm starting to cycle some things out now as well. I can't remember the last time I touched Z3ta+ 2, not because it's a bad synth but because I've found other things that simply work better for me. I'll bring it up occasionally if I'm looking for a different sound, but it's been a while. I never use the older Cakewalk synths and samplers like Dimension Pro. It just doesn't sound good to me which is another reason I'm happy they are including third party apps like AD and Melodyne because they are ones I will actually use. I've gotten all of the prochannel modules Cake put out and I like all of those as well, but the amount of modules they have is very limited and I'd like more if third party companies like FabFilter or Slate started designing some of their plugins to use on it.

By the way, I'm perfectly aware that a fair quantity of my 1535 plugs are mono version of plugs that I could eliminate in lieu of simply using the stereo version. But I find that a waste of life time to do.

bapu: the code's still 32-bit, just the registry keys have been corrected for 64-bit machines. It'll run on either platform. However, your ISP kicked it back as a security risk. Sorry. After I've gotten some feedback from others who are trying it out, and I get some verification that it works on other computers than my own, I'll post it up on dropbox.
