But again, I'm glad this thread happened. It helped me figure out a better workflow than what the OP did with 8.5 and I'd been doing with X3

No it didn't...

but if you're sure of yourself Show it!
Do it on 6 elements!

I'll show you how I do it on 20.

I said helped ME figure out a better workflow. Your workflow with 8.5 is not ideal for how I work, nor do I work with loops the same way you do. I create loops from nothing by dragging one-shots in from the browser, and augmenting by recording tracks which are comped - I don't deconstruct existing loops. So what you do with 8.5 is not relevant to how I work. However, the tips helped me figure out a way to improve on what I do with X3.

I understand what you're saying! and we probably work the same as I never use premade loops in my creations either. My point for Layers from the begining has been the layer workflow (yup, there is such a thing bakers, and you were at the forefront of it.) The ability to be creative and freely mold any part, from a rough ball of multiple layered clay to something precise within one simple channel strip. Bass, vox, tuba, fart, burp or ants having sex, who cares, looped over 4 bars or not looped and asynchronous, all of those are irrelevant details that became the buzzword of this thread like

"hey I can mangle with one drum loop too in X3!!"

All this to say : It did not need any fixing. Layers and Lanes could've co-existed regardless of the in-ability of cakewalk's team of programmers to understand the creative power behind this simplistic layers concept (or defect according to them) -

Well, we could have a massive tangent about Newtonian determinism vs quantum probability in a loop-editing context. That'd liven things up.

Yes please.  I bet google will be busy..

@Geoff S - thanks for taking the time to do the video.  You are a good guy.

To summarize, "one size fits all" tools like what existed in 8.3 are problematic since they don't handle any workflow particularly well. The tools and workflow that we implemented in X1 and higher follow paradigms that focus on perfecting specific workflows (like comping) rather than the all in one approach. Please try and use folders and tracks with quickgrouping and sends and you will find that they are as usable once you invest a little time learning them. Once learned you don't have to think about it and it will become second nature and not interrupt you.

Well the folder & track workaround is just not working.

However! I have to say that after a bit of custumization, I have been able to replicate almost of what I needed from layers, but within lanes! and without having to through any folder/bus workaround. After modifying a few behaviours and appareances, I'm getting the Scratch Pad feel I'm looking for - Yet one key details is missing but that would be solved by making one simple options available, like described below :

If anyone can chime in...

I think if you are trying to fold/spindle/mutilate X3 back into 8.5.3 that it will not likely work well for you.

But, at BEST that is a guess - in any case I hope you find something with X3 and in X3 that will allow you to meet your needs.

Come on Bob lol... There's enough threads on this board about how lanes just isn't looking or working right out of the box for enough users that my quest to make it more "friendly" may be justified :/

Don't get me wrong, the speed comping system is brilliant (for comping) and I've praised a number of features that I find appealing in X3 already all across this very thread. All I want to know is if there is a way to alter the behaviour of the smart tool, in anyway at all, in the lane context.

on a side note, the tools behave randomly and are buggy, the heavier the session gets.

Oh - I meant nothing by the earlier post - truly just tried to suggest that it (X3) may only bend so far, if trying to get it to behave like 8.5.3 - I made no judgment on whether or not trying to do that was good or bad.

Quite the opposite - I support you deciding whatever work flow works for YOU, and if you can get whatever release of whatever product to do your will, then cool.
