really is x3d that bad
complaints about the program is good in order to get things fixed; but the question really is how much of it is the program and how much of it are people systems not setup correctly, people not understanding how things work; and third party stuff on the systems that's not working with the program. I don't know I have few issues but who doesn't. I still record live every sunday; I still mix through out the week and still perform what I want to. Maybe I am not using the program to its full extent but what I am doing is a lot. (humbly speaking/just having a lil conversation)

so is this list put together to get things fixed or just to prove that it is not a perfect program? ( which there is not one on the market)

To expand.... "Hey, is this real, or is this just a list?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and say, "Hey, don't worry; don't be afraid, ever, because this is just a list." And we … kill those people. "Shut him up! I've got a lot invested in this list, shut him up! Look at my furrows of worry, look at my big bank account, and my family. This has to be real." It's just a list. But we always kill the good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok … But it doesn't matter, because it's just a list. And we can change it any time we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings of money. Just a simple choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better list. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace. So there :) Merry XMAS

I'll have to reserve comment on "d", as DAW still being upgraded but I agree wholeheartedly... the X series, up through "c" has been wonderful for me, and while many things needed to be flushed out in the beginning, X3 has been exquisitely awesome and the iterations (a to d) have been rapid, lots of bits tweaked and largely what remains are a few main users with personal differences (ie, takelanes/video) which get down to philosophical/habits/system issues. It is miraculous, to me... that such an amazing and complex/deep workstation exists on planet "eaarth"... a decade ago millions of $$$ couldn't have bought the power of what X3pro offers out of the box. Humans are too often funny, fickle, winy, self-oriented, ungratuitous, and ungrateful, stuck in their own precepts and historical perspectives... which is part of the reason the planet, and us as a species, is in such trouble... I fully appreciate and respect all the efforts which have gone into X and love the bakers, who've been outdoing themselves over the past year... fixing bits as they crop up... And this is not coming through on the forum at the moment, which is sad. Less emotional garbage would be nice. And remembering the PC platform is difficult to manage, which they are doing a steller job of... I just thought of another thing.... as the bakers, at all levels, are really active on the forums these days it is maybe bringing out a lot more of the issues some have which they've felt neglected, even now... for example... the play list situation... "Hey, they're listening... I need to speak up... now's my chance..." Personally I think this is good on both sides... but less venom about the past is warranted... as they are listening... And, maybe a little love thrown in, for good measure... because, folks... we are frackin' lucky to be alive and have this creation available to sculpt our visions...

After the fiasco launch of X1 when everyone wanted to jump ship we have constantly been bombarded with the "fix it" list. I don't use every nook and cranny of the programs but what I have used in my workflow has been pretty solid. Other than the lack of even a semi-pro staff view, I have not had too hard a time doing anything I needed to with the program. That being said, X3 seems to be the most solid running version yet. I am not a licensed computer tech but I would venture to say that most problems can probably be traced back to system problems. My main concern is that before they turn out a new, improved version every year they should test it not only on a $10,000 computer system. Why not check it out on the barest minimum setup it will possibly run on as well? A lot of us working stiffs can't afford the latest and greatest and most expensive rig to run this software. I would feel better about having it run on the lowest processor and lowest amount of RAM possible just so we can get an idea if it's going to choke on our rigs or not. Don't get me wrong! I have been lucky to not have the problems most people have complained about here and elsewhere. We should be thankful that for whatever reason they seem to be cranking out updates as fast as they can. Look at how long we went with only one update in X2!

Sidroe... cake specifies minimum spec. I don't think it's the spec so much as all the crap loaded on budget machines... a budget build from your local small independent computer store would likely solve this problem... but expecting cake to bake a rock solid complex work of art that'll run on every piece of crap out there would piss me off... because a lot of sacrifices would have to be made. Personally I think if you're goin' with X3 you're serious... my friend went with something called mixmaster or something... it's a joke but I'm sure it runs on anything...and no one responds if you have an issue... Btw, I count myself as a working stiff... take home between 10-15K a year bustin' my butt gardening. Live frugally to afford what my sig elucidates... tried the crap computers at costco, good specs, big problems...took um back rather than complain about Sonar 6,7,or 8 even though, compared to X3, they sucked... Personally, I fine the involvement of Bakers in the forums really exciting and refreshing... and I hope each person posting cuts a bit of the wine and replaces it with gratitude, acknowledging the complex task of evolving this platform... We all want what we want but we can't all get it at once...

How bad is X3? I swear their are some folks who apparently use Sonar as a "game" to find out its faults and weaknesses rather than to make music. Why not see the product as half-full, instead of empty and draining low. 1. Try to learn it best 2. Find workarounds to overcome any limitations 3. Use another DAW or plugs to supplement Sonar's inadequacies Most of all criticisms I read has merit and the bugs reported has merit; along with some good improvement suggestions........... I deem to focus on what is firing in my cranium into beautiful noises instead of neurotic disturbances.

There are improvements that can be made, that's why we will have a SONAR X4 and beyond. But I must say that what we have in SONAR X3d, is off the chart fantastic! For what we paid for this, getting this much amazing capabilities and features is hard to imagine. If some users abhor this technological wizardry of SONAR, there is nothing I can say or do about it. But I have chosen to take these excellent tools and make money and art with them. I move forward and just get the job done. Nothing has made getting the job done more a joy than SONAR X3d Producer. And I almost feel like part of a family with Cakewalk. The way the Bakers chime in, I can see that they really take pride in their product and they care about how others use SONAR too. The user forum with all these familiar names helping each other out (for the most part) really lends credence to the "being part of something" feeling of the Cakewalk family. If SONAR was really a show stopper, I would not use it. I have been making real cash as an audio engineer since 2004. I have produced albums for bands like Carnifex and Liquid Blue. These bands tour the world regularly. My tool from the very beginning was SONAR. So, is SONAR Capable of getting pro results. Yes! If you are capable of getting pro results, SONAR will not hold you back in any way, but will allow you to user your skills and creativity to get the job done in an absolutely enjoyable way. Thank you Cakewalk!

In answer to the question posed at the beginning, X3d is excellent. Human nature, on the other hand, can be rather disappointing sometimes. The people who like the Sonar the best seem to be the ones using it to make music...and it's an extremely capable and inspirational partner in that process. I've worked several hours every day this week with X3d on a fairly involved project. No crashes. Easy workflow. Nothing got in the way. Comping saved me if not hours, at least a whole lot of minutes. There were not only no show stoppers, there were no hiccups. Anything I needed/wanted to do, I could do easily and efficiently. It takes just as much effort to learn a DAW as it does any musical instrument, and I think all my practicing with Sonar and computer skills has paid off in terms of letting me have a very positive experience every time I boot the program.

I would like to put this in another perspective. What if we had a Sonar * that worked perfectly with your thoughts and could do exactly everything you wanted it to do? What if any DAW could do that? The only one we would have to blame is ourselves and our own thought pattern. Who the hell could fix that? Since the beginning if time people are always looking for faults and everything bad in everything, everyone they come across. People should start looking at the good things that we have. Wouldn't that make our lives much better. The bakers have a vision of making a DAW that would give everyont all the tools to express themselves in music as well as video. Every time we complain ,we break off a little piece of that vision and ultimately make it worse in the end. Be thankful for what you have and let cake complete their vision without complaining like little children. MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR to ALL.

Vastman, I agree whole-heartedly with you. I'm just saying when any DAW is being developed I would venture to bet that the computer it is being developed on far exceeds what most users own. I would not want Sonar dummied down just to run on a Pentium 2 with 128 mb of RAM! As I said before, I have not had the major issues that a lot of us have had. But my work doesn't force me to try to run 256 tracks of plugin synths without the processor catching fire either. I am extremely happy with Cake products. At the same time I have seen others on this forum say they were tired and disgusted with feeling like they paid money to become a beta tester every time an update comes along. Bottom line: If you can't make music with Cake products, you probably won't be able to with any other program as well.

I think the list is great and thank Alex for investing his time and energy in putting it together. Now when something strange happens we can quickly consult the list to see if it's a known problem, and if it is, save hours and hours trying to figure out what's going wrong. In the other direction, we may be encouraged to look at our technique or sytem setup if we don't find anything on the list. It's also a nice way to encourage the deployment of an X3e...

Good point. Alex is being proactive, contributing to solutions rather than adding to problems. He is not a SONAR apologist (I might be...ha ha ha) but he is a SONAR enthusiast and seems to genuinely want to get to the point and shed light on any REAL problems. Thank you Alex.

Agreed about Alex. He is one of the people I refer to as "partnering" with Cakewalk in the process of creating software. It's also reassuring that the majority of bugs he's finding aren't really all that signuficant.

Does CW have a beta program? I've been out of the loop for a few years so don't know the current status on that. It seems having a beta program would help in catching some of these "how did they miss that" kind of bugs. As far as X3d, my limited experience tells me that it is a giant improvement over X1 which is where I got off the bus. My arch enemy bugs, the MIDI crosstalk and crashing with more than one VSTi sending MIDI events have finally been fixed (almost 5 years since originally reported), so now I can do things the way I need to. There are obviously still more bugs and I'm sure many people have their own set of pet bugs, some that even makes Sonar unusable for them, but for me at least I can now enjoy using it. Anyway, I offered numerous times to beta test, but I never got any response back. And it is not to get free stuff or anything, I'll gladly pay for Sonar if the most annoying bugs can be sorted out. I do feel it is a little bit unfair to have bugs sit in each version that makes an advertised feature unusable, only to have to pay for the next upgrade to get that feature fixed. It is like buying a 2013 model car and finding out the radio doesn't work. But don't worry, they fixed the radio in the 2014 model so just go ahead and buy that one. I think CW should keep fixing bugs in older versions (say one version back) to be fair to those that paid for that previous version but the advertised features never worked properly. However I understand that at the end of the day it will mean less revenue since people will be less likely to upgrade right away.

Thanks for the comments :)
Yes only one bug that really concerns me right now, but there are also other issues which are of not much concern to me but would be to others. It's early days, I don't pass full judgement on this patch till the end of the year. There is still a bug backlog to be cleared out (as it were), and it seems as if Cake is showing the willingness to sort this all out, and I apperciate it will take time. I hope there will be at least a big patch every three months until X4 comes out or until these issues hit close to zero. A feature freeze would help here. I stress this is a hope not an expectation. Well I guess I'm hoping there will be an X3E in the next few months.... Otherwise does Sonar X3D work? H*ll yes. Is Sonar X3D too buggy? H*ll no, best release yet.... and I hope it will get better and better. @Steven please check #8. Thanks...

CakeAlexS It's a list.... so far I haven't seen it become sentinel. Maybe it says "Vote Reagan" or something... who knows.... it's just a a list... Bill Hicks are you there??? What do you say.... He says it's just a list...
I like the list. Based on problems people were reporting on the c patch I skipped it since b was working fine for what I was doing. I didn't see any show stoppers on the d list so I've gone ahead and applied d.

Anderton It takes just as much effort to learn a DAW as it does any musical instrument...
Words of wisdom... I feel at times that some either expect a giant "make song for me now!" button, or find a single bug they will champion unto death blindly... neither perspective is spending time learning the DAW or making music. X3d is quite the Christmas present actually! Merry Christmas everyone!

One thing I've come to realise, these patches really need a rollback facility. Of course we should all be backing up as well before we install.
