For anyone interested, today's Musicians Friend Stupid Deal Of the Day is the Event ASP6 Studio Precision 6" Studio Monitor for $299.

I just bought a pair of those about 6 months ago - I love em! Paid a little more than that however!

Anyone interested in Event monitors you may be able to find some great bargains on the ASP series cause the new series/range will be out shortly.

I have a pair of Event ASP8 active monitors as my mains, a set of KrK K-RoKs as secondary and also a set of the original Radio Shack Minimus 7's in glorious black die-cast metal.

I love the clarity, stereo image/soundstage and VERY DEEP, clean bass from the Events.
The KrK's are my NS-10's and the Minimus 7 are my boomboxes.

All are hooked up through a Mackie Big Knob.

KRK Rokit 8's - the original ones, not the new, curved ones.

And a matching KRK Rokit 10" subwoofer for low end testing (I turn it on and off a lot during mixing). Again, the original one.

Dynaudio BM5A. Love those suckers but they really deserve a better room. We just bought a big house that has a dedicated room I can really treat. Will be moving in come May. Good times are comin'!!!!

Here's a tabulation from all of the responses. The Mackie HR824's received the highest number of responses. I'm not sure what relevance this all has, but the Mackie's certainly do seem to be a favorite. And I found it surprising that no one (except myself) is using NS-10's. Thanks to everyone who participated!

And I found it surprising that no one (except myself) is using NS-10's

For the past few months I've been remastering a bunch of CDs that were previously mixed on NS-10s. Now I'm not sure if it's the result of the monitors or the ears that listened to them but all the mixes are ear-bleedingly harsh and the low end is just full of crud. I actually have those same NS-10s here in storage, and I've been wanting to hook them up to have a listen to find out how good or bad they really are. Especially after reading the SOS article on them, it seems entirely possible that the original ears were the cause of the bad mixes not the monitors.

For me, I use Genelec 8050As with the 7070A sub. I use M-Audio BX5s for a second opinion, and Diamond Multimedia speakers for the third opinion. Interestingly, when I started the remaster I was thinking that the Genelecs were a bit on the harsh side and so didn't de-harsh the masters as much as I could have. But the producer came back and said that the masters still sounded really harsh. So I made them sound just like I wanted them to sound running over the Genelecs and now everyone's happy with them.

I would say that those Genelecs don't sound good they sound correct. They will expose the flaws in the sound. I've got an entirely different system that makes things sound good for casual, relaxing-at-home listening

The Mackies get really spat on in more uppity circles (aka GearSlutz) because they aren't super expensive, and they were a flavor of the month at one point back when and all such products seem to have a backlash at some point. But they are accurate and the new ones get down nice and low and they aren't stupidly expensive.

I have two sets of monitors I use. My main ones are my Mackie HR-824s and I also have a set of Dynaudio BM5s. I seem to get better bass response through the BM5s when mixing. So, I'll switch to them every-so-often to verify the bass levels.

My Mackies (older verison not the new ones) are my go to monitors because they seem to give me the best overall mix.

can I use regular stage monitors as studio monitors???

For tracking and rough mixes, sure. But when you get to the fine details and the mastering stage, you'll find that PA speakers and stage monitors are not up to the task.

Stage monitors in particular have an intentionally restricted frequency response. You don't want a lot of low frequencies in the monitor mix that would just muddy the sound onstage, and you don't want a lot of high end that would cause feedback. Furthermore, the horns in PA speakers are designed for volume rather than good transient response. Consequently, they yield a very misleading picture of your sound.

When I started in this home recording business, all I had were a pair of small Yamaha PA speakers to work with. As PA speakers, they were quite good, and commercial recordings played through them sounded OK. But my own mixes did not translate to other systems at all - boomy on some, tinny on others. Testing with an RTA revealed that they were very weak below 300Hz and uneven above 6KHz.

Acquiring real studio monitors resulting in an enormous improvement. Later, I upgraded to my current ADAM P11s and experienced another notch of improvement. I then added acoustical treatments to my room for yet another improvement bump. Finally, I added equalization to smooth the remaining resonances at the listening position. The quest for sonic nirvana goes on.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Hi Dave,
I just acquired a set of Event 20/20's passives that I power with a Bryston 2B-LP amp. They are perfect for what I'm doing.
Very nice clarity.

Thanks Dave.

Auld Skool JBL 4311's
minimus 7s
both driven by a mitsubishi dual mono block power amp. I use these because they're the ones I've had for years and years.

Built-in viewsonic LCD monitor's speakers for auratone duty (really helps dial in bass instruments into mixes)

Also Maudio LX5 surround system, because it was the least expensive 5.1 system at the time I got it that wasn't made by logitec.

Out of all of the above these give the most even across-the board mixes. The JBLs feel great to work on, but behave strangely in the low-mid bass in my small space. The minimus 7s should never have been discontinued. wonderful little things.

KRK Rokit 8's are ace if a bit on the large side. I have the originals and they can be driven directly out of the PC even if I don't (mine come out of the mixer)

KRK Rokit 6's (last year's model)... tied to a KRK Rokit 10" sub (this year's model).
Not the greatest setup in the world, but MUCH better than the Infinity home speakers I was using before until a tweeter blew.

The KRK's work pretty well for the money... about $700 for the set... but they work MUCH better after some room treatment.

I looked at some Mackie 8's and JBL somethings, and they definitely sounded better to my ears, but at around 3 times the price to get a matching 2.1 setup, I couldn't justify the price.
I'll likely add something like that whenever I get around to revamping the studio again, but that's years away... @ least 5 years, given current economic realities.

I'm happy,

Im using Tannoy Reveal passives (the old red ones, with black cone n tweeters inc surrounds)
Also have a set of DT100 headphones, Sony DJ headphones and Small creative satellites with a sub.

Am i happy with my mixes? well i post Touch The Sky on here pre master .... LINK
Quite a few commented that the mixes were nice and well balanced but as per usual, im still not happy lol and im spending time rerecording some bits just for my own sanity.

Im really struggling to work out what monitors i want, unfortunately im not made of cash and i wont be able to afford anything at the mid-top end, its gonna be a budget for me i think.
But before that i think im gonna see if i can do some more treatment to this room after spending all yesterday tidying it up and moving ****e about.

looks like your budget determines your choice-i thought i read somewhere that you could "train" your ears to any monitors especially if you can a/b your mix with a commercial equivalent or use an analyzer like Har-Bal to cover your monitors defects?

Well, my monitors haven't made the list yet. I use Yamaha MSP5's and the Fostex PM0.5's. The Yamaha monitors are accurate but can be fatiguing. The Fostex monitors are easier to listen to for several hours at a time, and are good for less critical listening. I also use them combined with the Presonus Monitor Station. Since they all have 5" drivers, I also use a Fostex subwoofer.
