A Minor Affair: Guitar Center Blues Play Along

updated 5/11/10

Get the A Minor Affair backing track from the Guitar Center website here:

http://gc.guitarcenter.co...cks/a_minor_affair.zip

Record a version with a lead part and upload it to your normal site for everyone to listen to your "take" on composing a lead part and then post a link.

May I suggest you include both the song name and your user name in the title.

e.g. A_Minor_Affair_mike_mccue.mp3 or something like that.

here's the original post:

A Minor Affair: Guitar Center Blues Play Along

There's been a few recent threads about lead guitar composition and key selection etc. I just do it improvisationally with a by ear approach. I have some knowledge of the fret board following close behind my fingers as the play... and then I say... "ahaaaah".

Whatever.

Kenny with the Telecaster made me aware that Guitar Center has some public play along tracks. I've been jamming to them. Thanks Kenny.

May I humbly suggest that anyone who cares too, download the backing tracks, record a solo for themselves, and post a link to your version on this thread.

That means you jimmyman, nonat, kenny, bats, spacey, bit, bayoubill, middleman, and all you guitar, keys, and horn rascals.

Here's my playing for the fun of it take on A Minor Affair:

BTW, I guess it's in A minor eh? I stopped by there now and then and played around in a few modes as well.

http://www.harmoniccycle....fair_mike_mccue_01.mp3

The lead guitar amp is mic'd up with a sm57... just for the fun of it as well. :-)

You can get the original backing tracks file here:

http://gc.guitarcenter.co...cks/a_minor_affair.zip

Let the cutting contest begin.

Get fancy.

best,
mike

     Wow Mike?
That is some nice sounds and playing. It's cool
to hear someone just jam. I've got to go listen
    again now.

Thanks Jimmy...  I really look forward to the possibility that you'll take a turn. I'd love to learn how you think it through or at least just listen to you do it.

FWIW I just updated my mix file with a newer version... the backing track has a lot of bass... my first mix has way too much.. this new upload of a mix has less bass. It still swamps my laptop a bit, but sounds ok on my DAW. Maybe this is a better compromise.

I haven't listened to the new mix but the one I
heard a little while ago was good. Didn't notice
any bass woof. It is inspiring when someone like
yourself asks for someone like me to do a version
    or take.

As for the subject of "soloing" over chords
(in this case basically Am) there are so many
    ways one can approach that.

       C major scale
       G major scale
       F major scale

And that's just the tip of the iceberg on
the possibilities to get some cool sounding
    solo's.

Then there are the "chords against chords"
thing too. Play the notes of a C major 7th
chord against the Am. Or imagine your in
Dm instead and play as though (that) as the
    (chord).

The song is in Am but your playing as though
the song is Dm. Your better players like Kenny
weave in and out creating "tension" but that
tension is done for a short period.

If one stays (too inside) or (too safe) the
solo becomes "just a thing". I sometimes
am a "chance taker". I'll go way out on a
limb. Sometimes I make it back before the
limb breaks and sometimes I don't.

The backing is cool, sounds very nice, and great lead sound :)

My strengths is improvising and coming up with strong 'hooks/melodies'.  Phrasing is important for this piece, it's got to flow and not only are the notes important and the way they're played but it's the space in between those notes that's equally important.

Giving a good performance is not an issue here, I can improvise with my eye closed, what I'm concerned about is; I don't think I have a decent enough guitar or solo brass sound to justify what this composition needs but I'm willing to give it a try if you want.

At the moment I have three songs-projects I'm working on and want to complete one of them tonight.

Mike; what's the deadline for your/this project?

No dead line at all simply add a post when you have something to share... it's not a contest... I did it for relaxation and general practice.

I was just talking it up about cutting earlier to motivate the shredders and the comp'ers.

Do a guitar rig version if you want. :-)

I'm mostly interested in hearing the harmonies other folks hear in their head.

It might be fun to see how many ways someone can play over the backing tracks...

Sort of like pre-remixing... is that a word?

    mike

    Thanks.

I hope you'll consider giving it a pass and posting just for the fun of it.

I am guessing the backing track can be played over a bunch of ways.

    Hi Mike ,
    that came out nice
the tone on your guitar sounds good

That's what I am talking about.

    Kenny wrote:

Excellent... this is really what I am talking about. Kenny can hear that I grew up singing melodies and never had a proper harmony lesson in my life. Heck I use the lyrical melodic approach when I play drums... which is a REALLY BAD habit.

Thanks for throwing that out for discussion Kenny!!!

This is the direction I am hoping to see the thread go.

In one listen Kenny figured out my whole approach to making music... crippled and hampered as it might be... and that creates an opportunity for talking and thinking about writing accompaniment.

I would very much enjoy to listening to other peoples approach.

E.G. I think of Kenny, BayouBill, Spacey and Jimmyman as chord melody monsters... playing way over my head... so I know there is something to learn from them.

Guitarhacker has that Piedmont thing happening... I can't wait to hear his approach to this tune.

All you folks I haven't yet named... please come on in and share your vision and ideas.

FWIW I recorded my guitar track with open monitors in the room. The 57 was just right on the speaker grill... it all went real quickly.

    Keep it fun.

    best regards,
    mike

Ok, since I haven't played guitar for awhile and am working on some of my old tunes where I play guitar i thought this would be a good exercise.  One take , dry tele, a little reverb and delay (added to track) and a lot of slop.  A LOT OF FUN though short.  I don't know if anyone else has played with it.  I can't wait to hear what some of the boys (and gals) do here.

    Thanks for posting this.

I Love it... the way you use more of a chord form and stay centered. It seems more purposeful, controlled, and authorative.

I'm also gratified to see you approacxh this as a playing exrevise rather than a full blown mixing contest.

Getting people to talk about their playing while others get a chance to see how many approaches there can be is my goal.

Maybe some unrealized lead player will hear something in one of the interpretations and say... "hey that's how I hear it... maybe I'm a lead player too."

    Keep them coming

    best,
    mike

Put on some new strings and thought I'd stretch em out over the jam track.
I usually keep solos short and to the point in my songs, so I kind of ran out of ideas but kept on going.

There are some great guitar players here on the
forum. The truth is that all of us players have
varying levels of proficiency. In your case that
"level" is way up the scale. Then there is the
ability to play well in many styles etc.

What listening to this performance of yours
does is makes me think about myself and ask
the question of "could I do that well?" No,
    I don't think I could.

You've got emotion and technique. Putting
those two together is no easy task.

      That is some fine soloing.

    Wow! Nice job everyone!

Blipp and Thatsastrat... you're on my list now... "known guitar players" :-) Thanks for posting!

Kenny, you exceeded my hopes and expectations... that's some whacky thinking and on your toes playing.... thank you for sharing. I have to admit... you play a style that I personally really enjoy.. and you do it with panache.

Guitarhacker, I don't think I've ever heard you so relaxed... and absolutely ripping it!!! My gosh man, some of those riffs were really fresh sounding and the harmonic stuff you were referencing was subtle yet fancy. And everything so well played. The octave effect seemed to be the right thing at the right time. Bam.

    keep it up folks.

    I wonder where Brandon is?

The new additions are sounding excellent.

Loving the lesley=type sound on Thatsasrat's track and some tasty playing too.

Kenny is showing his excellence as an improvisor and what a beautiful tone. Great jazzy vibe from this.

Herb's track has got a Dave Gilmour vibe to my ears and it sounds good.  The dual guitar parts are a nice touch.

Frank's take is magnificent. Love that tone and the playing is so lyrical and expressive.

    Great job everyone.
