Unfortunately, I have to say you're right. I have a Honda Fit with 81,000 miles, all I've done is change the oil and I just replaced the tires. Brakes still like new, as well as everything else.

My GMC Sierra (60,000 miles on it). Here's what I've had to replace so far ... Both wheel bearings in the front end (second time), both rotors, calipers, pads, passenger side air bag sensor, sensor in the dashboard for vent control, driver side door latch and handle, CD player, connecting rods, tie rod ends, sway bar, solenoid in transmission, engine seals, transmission seals, bad ground in electrical system. And they wonder why I'm pissed every time I go in there shop.

Being a long time PT user I have to agree that the amount of false statements made here towards PT are eminence.
UnderTow isn't alone in his findings or thoughts.
I just want to see Sonar function as advertised/intended. Nothing more.
I've already gone over my thoughts on that http://forum.cakewalk.com/fb.ashx?m=2164691

Hi Brandon,

Brandon Ryan [Cakewalk

]

The phrase Pro Tools has become almost like a bat signal.
Actually that wasn't what made me check out the forum again. (See below). And if you would look at all my posts, you would see that I argue against anything that I consider illogical or just not well informed. (See my responses today to dr.hash for instance or look at my response to Mike about the lack of PDC in PT LE. THat was never a good thing IMO). It just that the topic of Pro Tools seems to cause the most uninformed comments on this forum. As I use Pro Tools nearly daily I know that some of these comments are incorrect so I address them. I also have a pet peeve against the thought that it is a given that most software has bugs on a first release. Some, sure. As many as some applications have? No way! Avid have proven that.

Incidentally, after reading your comments on the X1 discussion over at GrearSlutz I'm genuinely surprised you even click on the SONAR icon at this point, for any reason. No offense intended, but it just continues to baffle me....after all these years, and increasingly so.

I'm still in contact with the good folk that wrote that long "workflow enhancements" letter to Cakewalk addressed to amongst others yourself,  about  this time last year. (And in case you didn't realise, I was one of the co-writers). A comment made by one of them in email made me have a look here.

And much more importantly, I still want Sonar to work as intended so I can start using it again as my main DAW for doing creative stuff in my home studio. My main issue has always been the unresolved envelope and audio engine bugs. If those were addressed it would go a very long way to make me happy with Sonar again. If nothing else I could value Sonar solely based in it's feature set rather than on the fact that it doesn't do what it is supposed to do.

Sent you a PM.

As far as envelopes and audio engine bugs are concerned:

1) Envelopes are quite different in X1 and have been overhauled. I'd be happy to test any problems you were having previously to see if it makes any difference.
2) What are these audio engine bugs? Can you be more specific?

I gotta find a new DAW.

I see myself learning PT9 .

It seems like a huge step backwards

they took the functionality it down to 70%, made it look ugly, and have pretended some toy like efx represent technical accomplishment.

It is depressing.

That just plain sucks.

I may ask for a refund.

Hi Brandon.

Question, being the main Sonar presentation/public spooksman with access to X1 during development. At-least the prerelease as seen in the videos. With all the demos did you not notice the issues? AudioSnap/Quantize audio for example? I'm just trying to understand how cakewalk decided "yes this is the one to release".

What the hell is goin' on here lately?

I think it's all the stress from the holidays.

I have to admit though, I've been glued to the forums lately, it's like watching a never ending soap opera. It's awful entertaining!

Why can't we all be happy go lucky like Bapu? Golly gee he's such a swell guy!

I'm so happy with the X1, being I wasn't a power user, this new Sonar is made in heaven for me, every thing seems simpler, straight foward and clear for the first time in my dealings with DAW software, not that 8.5 was too complicated but it wasn't as self apparent to me as the way as this X1 is  .....I'm really glad CakeWalk came out with X1, me and my band mates are delighted....not since Melodyne have we been this excited about new software.....we already working on 4 different pojects....and they are coming along smooth as silk....amazing! props to the Bakers..great job guys and gals!

It's a fair question. The AS/Quantize problem happened somewhere in the cycle beyond me using it for anything I was working on or demonstrating. I wish that had not been the case as I certainly would have raised a red flag. Subsequently a big giant red flag has been raised about the AS issues in general and I know for a fact there is real desire to get these sorted ASAP. I'll be glad to let you all know more as I do, but it is a hot topic for sure.

As for other issues, I don't run QA, or development, or the beta team, or determine release schedules, although my opinion on the state of things is always known (both good and bad). Things I feel are going to be a big problem for people I bring up and fight tooth and nail to get them addressed. I think some people might be surprised how many advocates those on this very forum have inside the company. Now some things I never see as I'm not a tester...I use the program like much of you do...to accomplish the task at hand, or demonstrate and help people understand new features.

So yeah some things get by me, and yeah some things I want addressed don't get addressed from time to time, or at least when I personally would like. But we have good communication amongst ourselves and good discourse with the customers and I think right now SONAR is on track to make some pretty marked improvement in a lot of areas which frankly I'm optimistic about. X1 is a pretty big change but we feel it was necessary to move forward.

Brandon, I feel your pain.
The Tabbed-Ribbon interface is no doubt the worst software "improvement" of the past decade. Combined with dropdowns, hard to read colors, extra-clicks, new key commands,... it seems X1 has gone where no DAW should ever go.

I can read the discomfort in your responses to the multitude of complaints posted by longtime Sonar users, as you have to defend the results of your superiors' decisions. "Just try it for a while. Just map some keys. Just wait for the next update."

I am but a user. I have invested money and time in the program and company. But you have invested years of you daily life as one of the faces of CW and Sonar. And now this. Not much of a reward.

I will bet the sales of X1 have been primarily from existing users who anticipated significant improvements and fixes.

Many of us were hoping CW managers would finally get it. But this time is just about what it has been like since Sonar 1: complaints and requests repeatedly ignored and postponed.

It is clear to me X1 is NOT a new version of Sonar. All that was learned during the 10 years of users' requests and complaints has obviously been ignored again.

I assume some of the items on last year's list of most important changes were included. Was data import included in X1?

What bothers me most is it appears CW does not employ anyone who understands how to "anticipate and prepare" for change. These are the tasks of management. Yet, given the significant changes to Sonar, there has been no demonstration that anyone actually thought through how the tens of thousands of Sonar users would respond. I know this should not be a surprise to me. Pretty much each year it has been about the same. With many of the same comments about functions that we were "promised" years before. But I am dismayed.

No doubt it is disappointing to get really good at something and have to start anew with that which is less than it needed to be.

20+ versions of Sonar, and once again we are encouraged to salivate for the next version update, X1a, as a consolation prize.

And example of what could have helped:
a keyboard-shortcut template that would map keys as the are in 8.5.3 to help with the transition
And so on.

Black backgrounds? .....Really?

High contrast lettering right next to No contrast lettering. .....Really?

What's funny is, I've seen several complaints about how X1 looks. One long time forum member stated it actually caused him physical pain to look at the screen.

Funny thing about that is, one of the things that I hate about 8.5, is the way it looked. I can barely see anything. I always have to adjust my monitor excessively bright and close the windows in my music room, and then all the icon's are so small on my 1920 x 1080 monitor, and if I change the resolution, it goes out of native mode and everything is fuzzy and I still can't see it.

I haven't get my boxed version yet (Where is it Sweetwater? Damn it! You said I'd have it in my hands by today!), but from the screenshots I've seen, I think I'm going to love it.

I have to say I'm a little tired of hearing, "I'm a pro I'm a pro" and people expecting to be catered to. Us home studio folks, and hobbyists paid the same as the pro's for the product. The reality is, if you own your own studio, it's a business expense that can be written off, the rest of us it, it comes at a total loss of funds.

Not singling you out Mike, it's just that this came up and it was an 'on topic' way for me to say what I've been thinking.

I think a lot of us grew up in the analog days and I don't think we'll ever be totally happy with any DAW.

I wonder what changed with LCD monitors? Back in the CRT days you could select any resolution and it was crystal clear.

I'm currently using one 23" LG @1920x1080 and it's just terrific. I'm 45 so my eyes are getting to where I need reading glasses, but the monitor viewing on this is VERY comfortable. X1 is getting the single monitor treatment and to me I'm liking it.

actually I have been using two monitors but I've started having an issue with using the "vga" side (type of card doesn't matter/drivers don't matter)

I think it's more that as we age, our vision is getting worse.

However, LCD are designed to operate best at their native resolution and the image degrades outside that resolution where CRT could operate at any resolution, within the spec, and not degrade any.

Re:Why should I stop complaining? 2010/12/19 07:25:23 (permalink)
Thought you were calling it a night Billy. I am. I'm calling it late Sinday night. Here in OZ.

Don"t stop complaining Mike. You did go a bit haywire a few weeks back but I think you're OK again now. As if its up to me anyway.

I had a good look at moving to PT 9 - my worry came when I read the feature set of the new PT9 and realizing that to get anywhere near fiull functionality I'd really have to get the big add-on pack which apart from hardware brings PT9 upt PT9HD standard. That make PT 9 $599 + $1995 quite a surprise when I worked all that out. When you spend that maoney you get the real PT9 software and reasonably on par with SONAR 8.5.3 or X1 (take your pick) Sure there are advantages in one area and deficiencies in others.

It didn't fill me with happy thoughts having to spend close on $2600 to be where I am now albeit that I'd have the "Industry Standard". I think the reality is that PT9 is infact a slightly upspec'd PT LE but you still need the Addon pack (not the $459 instrument pack) or the PT9HD version to get the real program. Kind of like SONAR Producer vs new Essentials version.

SO back to SONAR (Well I've never really left) I'll continue to use other DAAWS as well for those times when only another tool is right for the job.

Anyway as we've already agreed the only way forward is to keep complaining albeit with a civil attitude and make our problems known. After all we are providing the hard data from putting SONAR through its real life paces.

ciao again Mike Mc & Billy

It seems that Cakewalk intends to placate the frustrations of people who purchase technology that they are not prepared to understand. For the past 5 years Cakewalk has engaged in both smoke and mirrors marketing and dummy down development... which is a typical, perhaps classical, symptom of a mature technology abandoned as a products to be consumed as light entertainment.

Well don't rush to judgement.

BTW I'm updating my studio this week with 2 new monitors.

from 2 X 20" @ 1680 X 1050 to 2 X 24" @ 1920 X 1680 + 1 X 24" @ 1680 X 1050.

Why? I may get to see SONAR X1 the way ot was meant to be and make me feel better about it.

As for those of us that are complaining. We're the ones learning the program, posing questions, providing important feedback to Cakewalk, providing help to new users and committed to making it better and making it work for us. I mean don't you folks understand we're still here and using SONAR X1. Although this week I'll be using it less until X1a drops (said to be some time during the week of the 20th). I've probably spent upwards of 30 hours at SONAR X1 this week with the sole purpose of learning how to use it. Experimentation, tutorials videos, reading help files, running the program creating projects, putting it through otis paces.

Well, the gnashing of teeth goes on. Once again I have to take the position that workflow improvements are purely subjective per user and that is what they want to see. X1 is a new system apparently. Less toolbars sounds good to me. Obviously there will be a learning period upon opening X1. Things like colors shouldn't be at the top of the list and if streamlining the GUI frees up resources on the PC, I'm all for it. I won't be dropping 8.5.3 PE any time soon since I am using the VS700 system, but I will take the time to install X1PE and learn how it works. Change is inevitable, software adapts, we must be adaptive also.
