+1 on Quicktime Pro. I tried a lot of freebie options, but nothing beats the reliablity I have experienced using uncompressed .avi's from QT. The 'add to movie' function, and 'Export for Web' option are great for sharing demo's with clients.

. OK, guys - so I patched Quicktime Pro to 7.7.2 Then, I wrapped my problematic .MOV as an .AVI. using QT Pro. No dice. Sonar 64-bit wouldn't import it. (Didn't try 32-bit, since I want to score in 64-bit). One theory here is that for whatever reason, my Windows registry does not have the proper codec to play back this wrapped .AVI file (which could be an MPEG-4 file now - I'm not sure what QT Pro did in the wrapping). OK, so next, I DL'd Sony Vegas Home Studio HD. I rendered (wrapped) my .MOV file in Vegas's .AVI wrapper. Then I imported Vegas's .AVI (I don't know what actual format/codec Vegas is employing) to Sonar 64-bit. It worked. Yay! So now I have at least one solution. I can use Vegas Home Studio HD for $50, which is not bad. Plus, obviously I get the editing features, and I already know the GUI since I used CD Architect for years. So, thanks for all the suggestions, felluz! Now, the real questions left are: 1. What file format is Vegas actually using when it generates/wraps an .AVI file? 2. What file format is QT Pro actually using when it generates/wraps an .AVI file? I'm assuming MPEG-4 here, so I'm surprised Sonar 64-bit won't play it. On a last note, VLC has also been recommended as a free file converter program - but I have no idea if it works for Sonar. If you guys want to check it just be careful where you DL it from - because it's been bundled with some spyware, etc. So you should get it from the manufacturer's site only. At any rate, I'm very happy to finally have a solution in Vegas. I'll be glad to buy Home Studio HD when I have my next scoring gig. Again, thank, dudes! .

sqye OK, guys - so I patched Quicktime Pro to 7.7.2 Then, I wrapped my problematic .MOV as an .AVI. using QT Pro. 64-Bit Sonar is limited to the very few 64-bit Direct Show codecs that 64-bit Windows has. I don't know what QTPro exports by default in an .avi file, but you can adjust it to the few variations that QT does support for .avi files. But I don't use QT for making .avi files, since it is fairly limited in that capacity. Now, the real questions left are: 1. What file format is Vegas actually using when it generates/wraps an .AVI file? First, "mpeg-4" actually encompasses a large range of codecs and transport methods. But generally speaking, people say "mpeg-4" to mean "mpeg-4 part 2" and "h.264" to mean "mpeg-4 part 10". (It's a lot more convoluted than that...) Sonar 64-bit will playback mpeg-4 in an .avi file, but not h264. I don't know what Vegas defaults to, but if it worked in Sonar 64, then it's probably mpeg-4 part 2. To find out what is exactly in a file, I like http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en which tells you all sorts of info about media files. 2. What file format is QT Pro actually using when it generates/wraps an .AVI file? I'm assuming MPEG-4 here, so I'm surprised Sonar 64-bit won't play it. I don't know, as I mentioned above. But if you've created the avi file in QT, you can open it in QT and "Get Info" to find out what codec is in there. Or MediaInfo. On a last note, VLC has also been recommended as a free file converter program - but I have no idea if it works for Sonar. If you guys want to check it just be careful where you DL it from - because it's been bundled with some spyware, etc. So you should get it from the manufacturer's site only. I love VLC as a media player, but I've had nothing but problems using it as a converter. I prefer WinFF for that. Others like SUPER. I don't like SUPER since its website just screams "spyware" to me. Maybe it's fine, I don't know. But WinFF is safe. At any rate, I'm very happy to finally have a solution in Vegas. I'll be glad to buy Home Studio HD when I have my next scoring gig. If Vegas worked for you, then I'd just stick with it.

. Hey, thanks so much, Steve. This is awesome. Yes, I have a feeling it's exactly what you're saying - QT Pro is creating - or passing on - h.264 mpeg-4 files in the AVI wrapper. And Vegas is actually creating an mpeg-4 part 2 file in the .AVI wrapper. Is this what you're saying? And thanks for the WinFF recommendation - I'll definitely try it next time. I think as a rule I will be receiving these particular .MOV files - which are also h.264 mpeg-4 wrapped in QTs format? It's all very confusing...yikes. Anyway, yes indeed I will be sticking with Vegas for the converting for now. Thanks again, man - this is very helpful! .

Hi ! I do music to picture about everyday, while it's not always a pleasure in Sonar, I get lots of lags, and ridiculous lags when scoring after the video....on a 6-core Xeon...(and all my other computers too, and that, since as long as I score on Sonar..) For most projects I just can't give up Sonar, afterall, it's such a good program for so many other reasons...I managed to make up for most of it's annoyances, l use AVS video converter, export in WMV9, it's the best codec I've found that works in X1 X64. (There is a conversion preset for that). Wierd thing is that Quicktime import and export works in Cubase-Nuendo... and in Logic, the video player is another thread, and it works so well... I don't see why Cakewalk sees running QT (or any video) in a wrapper, as a problem? while some tends to see it as a solution?... just sayin'....;)

Removing the offset seems to remove the lag. Is that what you're seeing? well.. I never tried without an offset actually...it's such a basic need for anyone scoring to picture. ;) but for the sake of nailing the problem, I will try a project without video offset, then I'll report back here. it's an interesting lead... Quicktime support is the reason I've stayed with 32-bit Sonar. I always get .mov files and it's too cumbersome to re-encode them to a format that 64-bit Sonar can use. Honestly I would not stick to 32-bit for that, as AVS really converts so fast on a recent computer, it can also batch convert for you. but I agree that the best would be not to convert at all.... the more I think of it, the more that idea of a separate thread for video playback makes sense.. in Logic, the video playback is handled by quicktime, a completely different program... it would be awesome if Cakewalk would do this teleport idea (3rd party bridge), with guys that do VLC, not only would work so much better, it would read any format, unlike now... Cheers! V

Adobe doesn't want to sell the technology to APPLE...so then no Flashplayer-on Ipad or Iphone ... adobe have already made a 100% FREE "preVersion" of Flashplayer for iphone and Ipad. Its 100% free for Apple or anyone else to use---but APPLE won't allow it! what's next @ Apple..no Microsoft Word on MAC becuase Apple can't own it? *I say; I"loser"...hustler... *this post were made with BETA X64bit Flashplayer V10.3 X64bit http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplatformruntimes/flashplayer10-3/?tabID=details#tabTop Utter BS which I have addressed in the past, Freddie. Drop the hype and the propaganda for a minute will you - you're spreading more misinformation and half truth on these boards than the worst Apple fanboy could. Adobe announced the end of Flash for mobile in November 2011. They'll focus on HTML5. I know you like bold characters, maybe this'll get your attention. So I guess Apple knew something after all... Guys, just one question, I´ve been usin Cubase when working to picture just because Sonar was not really working.. I got Vegas too. The thing is, when I import to Vegas then I have to render it out agein, I can´t really convert, which means it takes time to render and the quality is poor after that. Then when you want to show the results to your client you have to render it back, my god wahr a waste of time.. now isn´t the process what QT pro or AVS are doing notn better? Instead of rendering they just convert, right? Correct me if I´m mistaken, cheers

vlab SCorey Quicktime support is the reason I've stayed with 32-bit Sonar. It's a workflow thing for me/us. The video editors or animators check in an updated video into our version control system, and I check it out. Sonar will always be pointing to the latest version. Changes can sometimes come in multiple times during the day. I'm also oftentimes working on multiple projects during the day. I can't spend the time --even a minute or two-- converting to another format that Sonar can use. At the very least, the video/animators would be asking why I'm using that program that can't use quicktime files? I also use Vienna Ensemble Pro on a 24 Gig RAM system, so I'm not limited by 32-bit RAM use. I'm glad people have found other suitable workarounds for Sonar's video limitations. I've got my own workarounds that work for me.

Then when you want to show the results to your client you have to render it back, my god wahr a waste of time.. now isn´t the process what QT pro or AVS are doing notn better? Instead of rendering they just convert, right? Correct me if I´m mistaken, There is "rendering" or "converting" and there is "multiplexing". Rendering or converting is re-encoding and it takes time and reduces the quality unless you go uncompressed. Uncompressed still takes time and creates a huge file, but at least keeps the same quality. So Vegas/AVS Converter/Super/WinFF and others, will render/convert. "Multiplexing" doesn't re-encode or convert anything. You can de-multiplex a video into its component audio and video streams; then create a new audio stream; then re-multiplex the new audio and previous video stream back into a new video without re-encoding or converting the video. This is what QTPro can do with .mov files. It is much faster, you don't change the video quality or stream size at all. Also, Sonar can re-multiplex an .avi file. But you choose "none" for the video codec. "None" in that sense doesn't mean "uncompressed" (there is a specific setting for "uncompressed") it means "no re-encoding". This only works in Sonar with .avi files. WinFF can also do this, but it doesn't have a setting to do it by default. You have to create one. Incidentally, WinFF is just a front-end to the ffmpeg command-line utility. Ffmpeg can do just about anything with video, but it takes a while to learn the ins and outs of it.

perfectprint sqye - as i mentioned at the top of the page, you need to export an uncompressed .avi from QT. File > Export > mov to avi > options > video settings > compression type: none........ do that once and the setting will be saved. So, perfectprint - it sounds like you and Steve Corey are potentially saying different things here? Steve is scoring in 32-bit - as was I. Now, I'll be using Vegas to do the .AVI wrapping - so I can score in Sonar 64-bit - - unless your technique for creating Sonar-friendly .AVIs (or any other Sonar-friendly file formats) works in QT Pro. I still have to test this using your conversion method recommendation. But I just want to be clear about your differences with Steve here. Thanks! .

Steve sounds like he knows what he is talking about with video. I recognize 'codecs' 'compression' 're-encoding' but am not well versed enough on the subject to know the specifics of what is what in the video world. All I know is how to get .mov files sent to me to work in Sonar 64. I went the least complicated route, using software already installed on my computer and after a few missteps, found a result that has worked for me over the last couple of years. Not sure how much Vegas is - but at least you get video editing capability with it. QT Pro just unlocks some features.

I don't think perfectprint and I are saying different things, we've just come up with different ways to achieve our goals. perfectprint is explaining how he gets a video file to use in 64-bit Sonar, and I explained how I find it necessary to stay with 32-bit Sonar for QT compatibility since re-encoding all the videos that come to me into a format that Sonar-64 can use isn't feasible in my workflow. As a side note, there is a difference between QT's "none" and Sonar's "none" when creating an .avi file. QT's means "uncompressed codec" and Sonar's means "don't change the codec, don't re-encode, just use what's there". And again, that's just for exporting an .avi file from those respective programs. To submarin: Yes, I just re-marry the audio and video in QT after creating the soundtrack. I'm not at my studio at the moment otherwise I'd walk through it and give instructions.

Hi everybody, it is actually not necessary to convert QT .mov files for playback in Sonar 64 on Windows 64. I tried this when I upgraded my DAW to Win7 64bit and it works great! All you need is the right codec for this job and there are many free codec packages available. I use the "K-Lite Codec Pack x64" but I'm sure, others will work, too. It's recommended by the install notes to install also the 32bit Codec Pack under a 64bit OS, so I did this, too. Just install the codecs and you can import .mov files in Sonar. If Sonar doesn't let you pick up .mov files in the import dialogue for the first time, choose "All Files" and then open your .mov file. Best, Klaus

. Wow, thanks, guys. This thread is getting better and better. I'm going to try everything you guys are suggesting, and see if any of these solutions work for me. Very cool! And Steve - what do you think of Klaus's solution here? .

32bit Codec Pack Klaus Hi everybody, it is actually not necessary to convert QT .mov files for playback in Sonar 64 on Windows 64. Best, Klaus Hey Klaus. This is awesome. Thanks! JOOC, what specific 32bit Codec Pack did you install - was it the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack? .

I had tried K-Lite (and a few other codec packs) a few years ago and it didn't solve my problem. Maybe it's time to re-visit it and see how it's progressed. I am a little leery of those codec packs because they tend to install lots of stuff that isn't needed for what I do, but nowadays it's easy to roll back the system if it doesn't work out. I'll have to find the time to give it a go.

@sqye: No, I installed only the "Standard" 32bit version of the K-Lite codec pack additionally to the 64bit version. @Scorey: I'm also quiet picky about what is installed on my DAW (dedicated, music only, no network, etc.), so I understand your hesitation very well. From my experience with this particular codec pack, everything went fine. During the installation you have full control about what will be installed and what not. And Win7's "Uninstall/Change Programs" program lists only the 2 codec packs (32/64), so I think that's o.k. For me, of course @submarin: Wären wir damit etwa schon zwei? Best, Klaus
