Reading this thread makes me understand that I'm priviledged.
I've been living with a beautiful woman for 10 years, and NEVER ONCE! has she complained when I'm in my studio till late at night.
Sometimes when I'm restless she even sends me down there saying: I can't have you in the house when you're like this, get down there and do what you have to...........
She knows she'll get tenfold back, though.
Got to get her a ring on the finger............

WOW!

I really thought your post was funny Anton.

I think everybody needs to watch a little less reality tv and more comedy central.

Actually, my wife is very cool when it comes to this. Generally. She's not cool if I'm in here until 3am and grouchy the next day. Or too tired to mow the lawn. She's not cool if I've highjacked the savings account to buy equipment without talking to her first (well, she might have said no if I did). She tells me if my songs are good, or if they stink. Or, if they're not up her alley ("Gee, hon, have a hard day? That one's a little depressing.") She'll also spam all our friends, relatives, neighbors, coworkers--every email address that she can get her hands on--and say, "Go check out Charley's new songs on Soundclick." She puts up with constant saxophone music around the house, even though she's a trumpet player. She's a wonderful wife, mother, and my best friend.

Anton, thanks for a fun thread! Laters!

We use three bank account system, mine, hers, & ours. Our paychecks go into the common account, and then we give ourselves a monthly allowance. If I have enough in my account then I can buy whatever I studio stuff I want without asking. Likewise, she can splurge on something I would never approve of if she has enought money in her account. It has been working great!

Don't even get me started on this topic - i could rant for a while... but i will spare you all. I will say that although my wife doesn't fully understand my thirst for music - i am glad that she can put up with my occasional moments of creativity here in the home studio.

I am lucky my wife does not mind I spend a lot of time fiddling with all that my setup has to offer. Playing the guitar, bass, programming drums or torchuring other listeners by singing. (lol!) She does not mind.

Although, I would expect "that look" if I said that I needed to do some tweaking on our anniversary. DUH!

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

Man! This must be a forum record for bringing the dead back to life! (I've almost done it by mistake a couple times, but caught the OP date in time!)

Anyway, it would be cool if the 2004 posters to this thread would read what they said six years ago and update their thoughts on the subject! See if anything changed over time.

Hi,

So, if I may ask ... it was her "time" and you guys spending ittogether ... and you cut that short because of a drum track?

Is it more important then the wife? Or the kids?

Scary! Really scary! Yeah, I would be pist off too. Why even bother with the romantic excuse if you're gonna hand it up to dry in the middle of it?

I'm happier now than then ... and having a lot more fun and I suppose one could say ... a lot less stressful than it was then. For a 59 year old, I'm not sure that I could ask for anymore than that!

Re: RE: why dont wives understand 2010/08/28 13:06:48 (permalink)
Hmmm, the interesting thing for me is that my wife is much more supportive of my going off to practice or work on music now than she was in 2004.  She evens puts up with my "I'm using the mikes so find someplace to settle in for awhile"... I'm in the basement, we have a 1950's house with hardwood floors and those squeaks get picked up like nothing else.

I think the two contributing factors are:
1) Some other husbands are total jerks about their hobbies and neglect their spouse... or even worse impose their hobby on their spouse.  (That's not me.)
2) I've learned to give better estimates of when I'll be done.  So "I'll be done in a couple minutes." means 5 minutes, 10 tops; not 20-30 minutes or 2 hours like it used to.

One of the ironies I've always observed is that the thing that initially attracted them to you (the musician part) becomes what they despise

C'mon, folks. What's a good mixing session without being interrupted for a hug?
CAA

Actally this is a GRAND TRUTH of all opposite-attraction relationships: the shy one is attracted to the outgoing one, then resents that outgoingness, and vice-versa. This is because people who lack the ability to change something about themeselves ineveitably sek out others who have those qualities.....ahhhh but I digress from the topic at hand.....boy are there a lot of different experiences here.... but the truth is that we are all different, and if you guys think we are putting up with a lot, think of what these women have to put up with in regards to the male species.....

And I for one still think it is easy to understand women, and what we men have to do:

You've got to hold her
Don't squeeze her
Never leave her
You've got to hold her
And never
So you got to try a little tenderness

Although I'm guilty of "5 min = 1-2 hrs.", my wife is very understanding. I've personally made a commitment to putting the "Family 1st" and then myself 2nd. When this is sincerely done, I'm free to to do my thing in the studio. Just have to find a happy balance and try not be selfish with my needs.....works extremely well.
