For your Edification, here's a sample of the mics in operation. This is a live recording, with the kit miced with 2 SP-1s on OHs and an Audix D6 on kik. Neumann TLM 103s on Double Bass and guitar, violin DI

great mix Pmac,.. the violin sounds especially cool.. The singer of the project I am currently working on is a bit sceptical when he sees my MCA-SP1, so I always switch to the Studio Projects C1 which makes him feel more comfortable.. I guess next time I might just forget the C1 to bring along..

Ah well now, image is everything. When you tart it up with a $14.99 Musicians Gear Studio Microphone Shock Mount Does this shockmount work well with the SP-1? I've been using the shockmount from my AT-4033 for the SP-1 and it is not a very good fit.

Fits like a glove - has little handle thingies on the grip part that let you expand the holder to insert the mic, then spring shut to clamp tightly. Seems pretty well made, too. Just wish I could get one to fit my TLM 103s - Neumann wants >$250!

Yes, or footsteps (or even foot-taps, if the floor is really flimsy and the song has a good groove ). If you are on a cement block (like I am in my basement studio) then the need is not so great.

Yeah, the mounting bracket that comes with the SP-1 makes it very susceptible to picking up vibrations - at least in my situation.

So what does the shockmount protect against? It protects against clients seeing the name 'MCA-SP1' and going "is dat that $40.00 mic they talk about on the Sonar forum? $40.00!!?? I ain't singin' in dat!! Gimme da $1000 mic."

Hey jack...that sounds nice...your vocal is a bit high endy...but I'm sure that's not the mic...you probably took a lot of low end out. Could be my PC speakers, could be the difference between your monitoring and my listening, could be your voacl range, could be the songs, could be your eq...it's interesting to hear though.

i think i took off the 15k low-pass off on the previous set of vocals. i didn't really change much when i added the new ones so that may be it. but yeah, the SP1 is a definite improvement.

Nothing to do with the Mic, although I think it does sound better than the 57, but I really like your take on amazing grace, and that is not normally even my bag. Nice job.

Really appreciate your posting that example. (Your rendition is nice, too.) The difference is noticeable. If the signal chain is conparable (on analog and digital FX), then the difference is pretty real.

there's a bit of tubepre on the sp1. the other take would have been straight into my saffire LE. but barely any tube at all. everything else was left basically the same. i may have nudged up the lowpass 50hz or so. but the difference is definitely the mic. it's got a great sound, for $40 probably the best money i've ever spent.

Fits like a glove - has little handle thingies on the grip part that let you expand the holder to insert the mic, then spring shut to clamp tightly. I just got one of these today for my SP-1 and can't get the mic to squeeze inside. Did you have to remove the adhesive grip to make it fit? I have the exact same one pictured above. Thanks.

I just got one this past Friday myself. It's a very tight fit, but if you squeeze the handles really hard you can slide the mic in fine. The handles end up staying spread out so far that the rubberbands rest against them, but it seems OK.

Hmmm - on the back of the mount, opposite the mic stand mount thread/screw part there should be two little wire 'loops' - squeeze these together and it expands the mic clamp part.

Yeah, with a little force, I got it to work. I wound up taking the mic apart and sliding just the shell into the shockmount and then putting the mic back together afterwards. This made it (a little) easier to fit it into the shockmount. I'm sure it will stay this way. The mic in the shockmount looks pretty slick and I'm sure will work better. Thanks for the tip!

After seeing this thread and reading about the mic on other sites, like the Tape Op Message boards , I took the plunge and purchased the MCA SP1 and I have to say, it's the best $40.00 I ever spent. Thanks for this thread!
