ORIGINAL: herbster Hi, I am new to this Cakewalk forum... I would like to know what are the problems everyone is having with the Sonar 6.2 Producer Edition and the Tascam FW-1884. The reason I would like to know is because I have the FW-1884 and I am using it with Sonar 6.2 PE (only Audio at the moment) with no problems. Everything on my FW-1884 seem to be functioning in computer mode, recording audio... I have Window XP Media Center installed on my computer. Initially I had problems with Sonar 6.2 PE not recognizing my FW-1884. I uninstalled Sonar 6.2 PE, entirely, including registery. I went in to msconfig and clicked the startup tab, and unchecked everything. I rebooted my computer and I uninstalled My Anti-Virus software and then the FW-1884 Software (driver), including manually deleting all CakeWalk files on my computer (it is not good to do this, but I did) . Then I reinstalled Sonar 6 PE and the 6.2 update. Next, I reinstalled the FW-1884 Software from disk and downloaded and installed the Sonar update version 1.21 from Tascam website. My Tascam FW-1884 was powered on during the entire installation of the Tascam software and driver file. I rebooted my computer and opened up Sonar 6.2 PE. Then I click on the option menu to setup the audio and control surface selections. Remember, I have only tested the Audio functions in Sonar 6.2 PE, but not the midi functions. The audio functions works fine with my FW-1884. I hope this helps... The herbster I have Sonar 4 and 6 Producer. the 1884 works great with 6 other than i can't record enable with the actual unit. So, I have to click the record button on the computer. No big deal to me. It did work with Sonar 4, though. I LOVE the 1884. It sounds great! I wish Tascam would update their drivers though... The drivers I'm using are a couple years old at least.

Basically, I just use it for the faders/mixer functions. I HATE adjusting volume levels of tracks with the mouse, so the 1884 solves that.

It all depends on which control surface functions you use and how important they are to you... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I miss all of these with my FW1884 and Sonar 6. At least 3 of 4 anyhow, and I miss the 4'th on principle. I wonder how this works at Tascam Central, or wherever they do the bug fixes and code enhancements. Do they sit around at coffee or on a smoke break and fret a little that we're patiently waiting? Or do they just not really think about us because we're not quite on the radar screen. Presumably the people who need to know at Tascam are plugged in on this. Plus, we know/assume that it's in the Tascam update process. My view is that it is their product. Whilst they may chose to embed someone else's code (Frontier) as part of the system, ultimately their name is on the hardware. To be honest, my enthusiasm and hope are beginning to fade a bit. I find myself doing two things now: 1) Spending less time with Sonar (more time with Live). In no small part because the FW1884 has been affecting my workflow with S6, 2) Contemplating selling off the FW1884 and getting a Mackie controller. Ahh...I was doing pretty well up through June. Now, starting to feel like Tascam has begun an unannounced "Sunset" program on the FW1884. Less optimistic than before... Tom

For all the good it does, I still check the Tascam site regularly for an updated FW-1884 driver for SONAR. Today, I noticed the site is completely changed, with no functioning links, including to Support. Can anyone else confirm? It would be nice to think that something might actually change there.

geez Thanks tascam for a great new site and crappy, non updated drivers. Ok, I'm officially irked. I had a band over to record at my studio.... the computer just would not see the Tascam... i restarted and restarted.. and then the computer froze.. i had to reinstall all the OLD tascam drivers... and it finally worked.. almost an hour of my time down the drain and a band that is upset with a new studio. I'm not happy. I'm so close to putting my 1884 on ebay with a one cent starting bid that its not even funny.

On my Mac, I just tried to download the controller setup and LCD setup and it keeps defaulting to the main index. Another words, I can't download anything. Wow, thank god I'm not trying to install anything this weekend!

yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Their site is actually very well organized compared to the old site which was a mismash, especially the drivers page. perhaps there is new blood in management? couldn't hurt (much more). F@KKER
Someone said: I've had more time to play with this, and am withdrawing the bug remarks. This appears to work as designed and is actually a pretty cool feature.

I've decided that the FW1884 no longer meets my needs. I found its 8 faders limiting anyway when i have 8 tracks just for the drumset alone. I'm a background vocal freak. I usually have 4-8 tracks of backing vocals on my own songs. Anyway, I can't see spending $1000 more for the FE8 when Tascam doesn't seem to even care enough to support their product. The FE8 doesn't add any extra inputs anyway! I'm going to something a bit more high end... I need more than 8 inputs and more than 8 faders I guess. If anyone wants one, I'm putting mine on ebay later this week with probably a cheap starting bid around a dollar... not to be funny haha I just want to get rid of it

Hi Donald. Yes I'm as p155ed off as most of us here and was thinking of abandoning the FW but I'm at a bit of a loss as to what next. I dont want to shell out the bucks to be int he same boat a year or two later. I have been moving away from the FW pres and thinking about a different entry point to the PC raher than the FW connection. So what you buy for a 16~24 channel surface without the pres and ADAT inputs? Mick

I have been moving away from the FW pres and thinking about a different entry point to the PC raher than the FW connection. So what you buy for a 16~24 channel surface without the pres and ADAT inputs? Mick Have not posted in this thread in a while - I still hold a different viewpoint than a lot of people in this thread - That being that while I know it is Tascam's ultimate responsibilty to get this done I can't help but feeling that Cake has abandoned this issue as well and without some advocacy or sense of urgency from them it will just drag on - No updates or anything from them in months - Tascam is interested in selling hardware - plain and simple - they could care less what software is used. After the sale - Your on your own - Having said all of that - Mick, I think is where I and probably others are at - Looking for cost effective alternatives - The FW1884 offers alot from a hardware perspective and replacing it will be costly but in the end I think it is the only logical solution for me. Eventually - Tascam will put up the new dll but at this point (at least for me) it is just too far gone in principal if nothing else. Mackie Control + the RME FF800 is where I would like to be but that's a good chunk of change that I don't have and if I did would prefer to spend on other things (like good pres & mics). It's too bad - I really like this peice of hardware and think it has as much potential as any other interface on the market but I have long since lost my respect for Tascam as a company and thier customer support culture. Truth be told though - I am not real happy with Cake's silence on the matter either - But they have much more capital with me so .. the search continues..........

Dont know if anyone else has this little quirk of FW and S6. I get the flip control turned on when I open a project in 6 that has been recorded in 5. A real beaut that one...drove me nuts 'till I worked it out.
