Honestly, I find it a shame that this product isn't a Frontier Designs FW-1884 instead of a TASCAM. FD seems to know what they're doing with Customer Support. TASCAM could learn a thing or two.

Exactly. TASCAM was still touting the 1884 as their flagship firewire interface at Winter NAMM '07. So it's not like this interface has been orphaned, and we're getting support out of the good graces by TASCAM and Frontier. It's still being sold on the market, and should be supported as such.

tell you what,
If frontier design comes out with a merged product like the 1884 and the Alpha Track, I'd drop the 1884 in a sec
Or just the Alpha Track 24 SUPREME . and get a Dakota and Montana. (mIGHT GET THEM ANYWAY....OPPS sorry caps.)

<crazy talk ahead>
Frontier Designs and Cakewalk team up, offer up a full package Hardware / software system like _ro_ools. whatever...thats crazy talk.right??

Cakewalk and Frontier Designs are both class acts.

I .on't .hink its .razy .alk! I'd .uy it!! As long as it is MUCH better than the Control 24 (but the same size). I want a fully integrated, HIG-END Sonar solution. I'd happily pay upwards of 5k to 8k for SONAR + 16 to 24 fader CS + 8 to 16 channels of top notch AD/DA.

In fact, I've always fantasized about 'Vintage Version' SONAR (or whatever), dripping with 'vibe', where the per-channel EQ/Comp/strip was a Neve or SSL (or similar) modeled dealy with a control surface that could tweak the EQ, dynamics, filters, etc.. I could write a full page of whatr I dream it to be. I would pay through the nose for that!!

I just checked my 1802 and it is dead in the water as well. I kind of figured that would be the case. Cheers to the guys at Frontier for offering to step up on this issue.

I thought I'd chime in here, about Sonar 6.2 and the Fw1884 and Vista..
I've done a clean install of Vista Ultimate addition x64. Done all the updates for my Video card etc. loaded Sonar 6.2 a bunch of my plugs, Altiverb, Ezdrummer, Urs,... etc. Then someone in this thread mentioned loading the x64 drivers for the FW1884 and hold f8 and boot without driver signing blah, blah blah. Everything is up and running. My ram usage with just Vista loaded is 32%, with Sonar 6.2, just a stereo guitar track and Ezdrummer vintage rock kit opened is 46% of 2 gigs, just shy of a gig just to load Vista and that little bit. I heard glitches at 256 buffer in ASIO mode. So my amd 3500+ might need a dual core update and a bit of ram.... I'd like to see if I can utilize more then 3 gigs of ram for Sonar.. Gotta wait for income tax though!
But I'd just like to say, it's up, it runs... Obviously most of the plugs use "Bitbridge" to run in x64.
I've just kept it simple so far.. opening up an altiverb on ezdrummer caused a crash 2x's... But no reboot. She opened again quickly.
I guess I should pull my Uad-1 outa the Mac and see if she'll "do" Vista, they just released an x64 version as well.
Hopefully Tascam/Teac and Cakewalk can utilze this "wavert" technology to give us a tighter latency/cpu overhead driver for Vista x64!
I still have another HD with my install on x86 xppro. Just a bit of downtime, so I'm tinkering.
Later
Brian

oh man!!! This is blowing my mind!!!!

These guys are Awesome!!! already got a Tranzport. Thinking about getting another.

I'm speechless. except to say Thank you to Frontier Designs, you guys here on the forum, and Ultimately Cakewalk and Bob Damiano.

I have one also and I love it. I have been using it while the FW-1884 is in the shop (won't sync with new Core Duo system). Now I may just sell the 1884 and get Frontier's new Alphatrak. Frontier is to be commended for their great products. Hope the Alphatrak comes out soon....

I emailed TASCAM about Vista drivers and better SONAR compatibility. No response (big surprise right?)

However, I emailed Frontier after that and got a response within a day! Here's what they wrote back to me regarding these issues.

Frontier Design Group wrote:

Hello,

On the Vista drivers. To the best of my knowledge we are talking to
TASCAM about that now but have not resolved a timeline for it yet. That
may just be a matter of details but I don't have that information yet.
Hopefully soon if everything can be arranged.

Regarding Sonar 6 and the control plug-in. We are aware of these issues
as well and while we can't make any promises yet, we are looking in to
them with Cakewalks cooperation. Again, hopefully they are small fixes
but we'll have to see.

So unfortunately I can't give you any firm dates or guarranties at this
time other than to say we are looking into both of these issues. Maybe
that is at least something.

Brian

Thank you ALL for contributing to this thread- we're getting what we needed.

Also, thank you Cakewalk and Frontier for addressing this. I am a very happy customer. Here's to you all for the support, and here's to hoping SONAR 7 and the 1884 stay friendy!

I see that the email comes from Frontier Design, not Tascam, so once FD submits these changes to Tascam how long will it take Tascam to release the new Control Plug-ins. Based on Tascam's lack of response to these problems, I am not holding my breath...I don't think anyone else should either...sorry, just not getting my hopes up for a quick release.

I hear what you are saying as we all know how Tascam's support is(or is not) but you can also do your part and joining in the chorus by letting Tascam know that we are aware that a fix is imminent and we hope for and frankly expect a timely release.

I posted this in the Tascam forum as well but the more voices Tascam hears from (in a productive manner) the more likely we will see this sooner than later.

Let's just keep our foot on the gas - Frontier has stepped up big time - It's our turn - know what I mean?!

I sent the following message to Tascam public relations (tascampr@tascam.com) I'm not very optimistic about a response however.

I assume this message will be read by those charged with enhancing and maintaining the Tascam brand.

Tascam produces many fine products but the after-sales support is poor to non-existent. I think that will eventually damage your name and negatively affect your sales.

One case in point is your product called; “FW-1884”. A widely accepted product with the usual kinds of technical and compatibility issues that arise with every hardware product. What is very disappointing however, is that Tascam technical support do not have the courtesy to respond to enquires about systemic issues let alone offer any workarounds or commitments to address problems. In contrast most other hardware and software vendors are very responsive.

You don’t have to look far to see the numerous threads on software user forums that raise these issues while at the same time describing attempts to contact Tascam technical support and their frustration with the lack of response or offers of hope of resolution.

I don’t believe I will be alone in purchasing alternatives to Tascam products in the future if the lack of technical support continues.

Thank you.

It is a shame that the distrubution & branding name (TASCAM) does not provide support or anything for this unit. While the designers and people who truly made this product, Frontier, get bagged on essentially. Frontier created a good product that I couldn't do without, TASCAM just screwed up everything else.

Maybe my next product will be just a Frontier product - because like Cake, they give the impression they care.

DOWN WITH THE SCAM!

Hello Tascam crew,

As you may have heard or noticed, with Sonar 6 and the 1884 some of the functionality is broken.

I’ve heard rumors that Frontier Designs will be providing you with a new dll, to fix the issues regarding these two products.

I’m begging you (Tascam), to provide up users an opportunity to download this new dll. My workflow has suffered greatly.

Please, and thank you.

Sincerely,

Michael

Fingers crossed!

It is pretty non-committal, but that is a POSITIVE statement when said about Tascam!
