I received the e-mail about an hour and a half ago. I've already signed up for a lifetime subscription.

"Let's see, I can pay this amount every year, or I can pay it once." Tough choice.

I'm delighted. I can only assume that Cakewalk has their business model worked out and that this is sustainable for them.

John
If I am understanding this I think this a huge benefit to being a long time customer. I am looking forward to this as true perk for hanging around so long.   The only caveat is if they change the name in a year or two.  They may call it Radar down the line and we start over. LOL

That wont happen. Radar is a high end hardware/software DAW. I think the software side will soon be running Harrison code based on what my pal says. He has a Radar based studio. That aside, this lifetime deal sounds perfect for me because I already have many plugs. I only need the heart of the beast, not the fur and horns.

Regards, John
I want to make it clear that I am an Eedjit. I have no direct, or indirect, knowledge of business, the music industry, forum threads or the meaning of life. I know about amps.

Hi Joey,
Can you please check my account. I've been getting all the Cakewalk emails except for the $99 deal. My product page still says $199. I've tried to resubscribe as posted in anther thread, but that hasn't helped. Much appreciated, George.

why wouldn't you wait for the June 1st announcement though? Things too good to be true USUALLY ARE!  What if they are releasing a new product superior to Sonar and now you paid this for nothing?!?!

Sound a bit jaded and paranoid there, dude.
Plenty of logical and financially-sound reasons for jumping onboard have already been expressed by a lot of experienced Sonar users.

Besides, if Cakewalk were to make this offer then suddenly discontinue Sonar, the backlash would probably be enough to sink Cakewalk, and it's very doubtful that would happen.

The new generation of Sonar IS the superior product, and the lifetime upgrades guarantee the latest enhancements will always be available.

IMHO

I have not gotten any mailing from CW in some time until the teaser about the announcement started coming two weeks ago. Certainly, didn't get a sneak peak at the announcement.

The lifetime thing appears to only apply to Platinum? ...and it's >$500?

I'm at $99 a year for Professional and who knows what the next five years will bring...

- Sonar Platinum 64-bit; Reaper; Ableton Live 9; Samplitude
- PugetSystems Serenity Mini: WIN 10-PRO 64-bit; Intel Quad i7-4670 turbo to 3.8GHz; 16GB RAM; ASUS Gryphon Z89 - Antec P180 case.
- Focusrite Saffire Pro 40
- DSI OB-6 (love child of a Prophet and an Oberheim)
- NORD Electro 3HP
- Roland XP-10
- Customized Fender-Rhodes Dyno Stage 73

Here's a quote from Andrew Rossa from earlier in this thread.

"I can confirm this is NOT the case at all. The announcement is about SONAR development. It's positive news. We've been listening to customers a lot. We want to make them happy. I assume lifetime updates would be considered pretty significant news. The other news is equally as positive. I am not sure why you think introducing a new product would be considered good news for SONAR customers, especially after introducing lifetime updates :)"

Re: Big announcements coming June 1st, 2016 2016/05/20 19:00:25 (permalink)
I bought my lifetime membership a couple of days ago. Everything seems fine, and my account membership details show that I am signed up for infinity :)

However, I just received the lifetime membership email (I hadn't received one the first go-round. I just PM'd Andrew who checked my account, then I followed the link and paid. Done.). Anyway, I clicked "Buy now" on the email I just got, mostly out of curiosity to see if it would show the same price I paid (it did). I thought it might also indicate something like, "You already own this!"

It took me to a page with my name on it and a graphic of Platinum already in my shopping basket and the price already listed underneath but not yet purchased. Two other products (AAS was one of them) were shown, but you could opt in or out of those. You couldn't remove Platinum from the basket and just choose AAS, for example.

So, that email seemed to indicate that Cakewalk thinks that I do not have a lifetime membership already bought and paid for. I'm hoping it is just that they are trying to clear up the no-email confusion and sent me the lifetime membership offer even though I've already bought it. It just worries me that the "Buy" page shows my name and seems to think I still need to buy a lifetime membership.

As I said, my account membership details on the Cakewalk site show that I am a lifetime member. I'm just a worrier and hope that nothing in my account has become confused due to all the email mix-ups many people have experienced.

I know the Bakers have been working very hard and very courteously to address all of the email problems and answer all of our questions, and I'm sorry to add one more!

Thanks!

Sure... but that action at the moment targets loyal long term customers only, which was, are and ready in the future to pay for the product. So the customers which deliver continuous stable profit. Catching or fooling that customers group means committing financial suicide, where you see possible "profit" there? That only make sense in case the company already knows the date it is declared bankrupt. Do you really think that is the case?

This is right up there with the people who, when the membership concept was announced, theorized Cakewalk was just going to take the money and not deliver anything.

Didn't quite turn out that way.

Actually, there is. Cakewalk has learned from anonymous, highly placed sources at NASA who use SONAR that a giant meteor is going to slam into the earth on June 1st, causing an extinction-level event. So, they're grabbing all the money they can before then, and are planning to watch the end of the world while sitting in a hot tub in a luxury hotel on Maui. They've already chartered the jet. You won't be upset on June 2nd because except for cockroaches and Cher's career, everything else will be extinct.

Giving up the yearly membership dollars means they have something they think will generate even more revenue.  Some ala carte add on pricing/store.

Or ads - ads make money to a target group locked in for life faithfully feeding data back to further sharpen and raise the price of the ad targeting.

I paid $$ for TIVO lifetime service and still have a year to break even against the monthly payments and TIVO just got sold.  Hoping that doesn't mean "lifetime" gets redefined.

This, being a very long thread and my time being limited right now... how is Cake going to make money a couple of years from now after everyone has a lifetime membership? Are the PC modules now going to be sold? I don't mind.. I just wonder. I realize the first purpose of a business is to make money because without profit you can offer nothing to anyone.
Just curious.

It's a limited-time  offer; and offered to Platinum members only. So this isn't the new business model; it's a "thank you" to some of us long-term users.

I am a paid up Platinum member through Dec 2016. I've been a customer since S2PE, S3PE, S4PE, S5PE, I skipped 6, bought S7PE, skipped 8, and picked up again with X-1 and have bought everything offered since to try and be a loyal customer because I want Cake to be successful. When I clicked on the like (I think on page 7) it said my offer was $500+ dollars). No email. My account shows a Big Announcement for June 1... confused. What exactly is a long term user?

Hi-

I've seen a few posts about how this is a novel or new marketing model and how it might negatively affect CW's cash flow, but as others have said, Image-Line's FL Studio (formerly Fruity Loops) has been doing this for at least 12 years and they're doing just fine, thank you!

So, where do I fit? Can I get an email?

Thanks.

I didn't receive any E-mails about lifetime upgrades today either? And I'm active until July 16 2016
Not feeling loved!

As mentioned before. People who did get emails were people who upgraded like you did last year and also renewed this in 2016. You will get info on pricing on June 1, 2016. We just wanted to get those renewal folks squared away.

This would include me... I think. Sorry if I seem worked up, I'm excitable.
