I wonder if you, can by the looks of the instrument track it looks like the PRV is still there and if your MIDI controller data is in the PRV I'll bet you could edit it in the instrument track via PRV.

Just a spectulation

I thought so too until Noel say it couldn't.

Noel was talking about MIDI envelopes. Surely CC data as MIDI events can still be drawn and edited in the PRV - if not, that'd be just silly.

Hey guys,

After reading the last few posts here about MIDI envelopes being displayed on Instrument Tracks I decided to do a couple of small tests.

In the first test I loaded TTS-1 into an Instrument Track. Then I created another MIDI track. On the MIDI track I created a MIDI Volume envelope and drew in some random shapes. Then I copied the automation data and pasted it into the Instrument Track. As expected the data was not visible on the Instrument track. Next I split the Instrument Track into separate audio and MIDI tracks and when I did the MIDI Volume envelope appeared on the newly created MIDI track.

In the second test I created an instance of TTS-1 on an Instrument Track and immediately split it into separate audio and MIDI tracks. I then Write Enabled automation on the MIDI track, played back SONAR, and wiggled the MIDI track's Volume widget about to create Volume automation. As expected the resultant MIDI envelope appeared on the MIDI track. I then combined the Audio and MIDI tracks back into an Instrument track. Although the MIDI envelope was now not visible, when I played back SONAR the Volume slider on TTS-1 moved as it should have as it was being controlled by the "hidden" automation data in the Instrument Track.

So, the end result is that MIDI envelopes cannot be displayed or edited on Instrument Tracks but they can live therein and they will send the written data to the appropriate controller. When split into seperate Audio and MIDI tracks they will become editable and they can then be tucked away by recombining Audio and MIDI tracks back into an Instrument track.

Think of it as a way to keep things neet and tidy in the Track View

Thanks for posting that :)

Love the way the Instrument Track work in SONAR 8, as you say it's a great way to keep it all neat n tidy (compact)! Then with the option to split --> have separate audio, midi tracks thus being able to view envelopes including controllers for editing and then re-combine those tracks again into the Instrument Track! WOW!! That's excellent

OK this is getting too good. You do know that I am old school and now I find myself wanting to get my hands on Sonar 8 to use those darn instruments tracks. It is a little unfair now that we have to wait. Who'd thunk it! Me liking such new stuff.

I agree, this is getting too good! I can't wait to upgrade to SONAR 8

OK, I see... this seems as complete as the step sequencer roll out.

I predict endless bemusement witnessing frustrated users at the forum claiming there must be a better way.

best regards,
mike

... it's so easy to toggle between split and singular modes that I'd be surprised if it really caused much of an uproar ...

"It's so easy to toggle" (especially with an understood "and besides..." in front of it) is a clue to a possible less than optimum, or final, implementation.

Though it is often unavoidable, toggling between two modes is the mother of all speed bumps.
