If you right-click the Time Ruler and go to "View Options", you can uncheck "Left Click Sets Now" so that the Now Time doesn't change when you make a selection (only when you change it in the Time Ruler). 3. couple things from Avid: "select all after now", select all before now"... it's a single shortcut but a huge time saver when editing. I believe there's a way to do this using F9 and F10, but I forgot how to. Maybe someone who uses this often can chim in. Take care! No, I already set for "right click sets now" (only) but it stills resets your now time anytime you select a clip or many other similar selections- it's nice to be able to set now times for editing jobs separately from locate destinations, for listening to edits with a preroll. Also, select ALL after now would include clip selection too- everything, whereas F9 just selects the time to be set to "now", as F10 sets "thru" as a time point... but they don't actually select the tracks/clips after that point- it's nice to be able to select "ALL after here" and drag it, all clips- to close an edit... but thanks for trying!

- You can easily adjust note velocities by drawing in the Velocity Lane found inside the Step Sequencer. Just click on the square next to the note name to access it. You can also change other common parameters like Pan, Volume, Portamento, Pitch Bend, etc the same way.
ouch you are right of course! i was just checking the rotary knob thingies which seem to affect the whole lane. so at least velocity seems to work for each indivudual step, but duration and the others seem only to be available for the whole lane (if i am not incredibly stupid once again! ) - How exactly would the length of the notes be adjusted when they don't fit the grid? I ask because, if the note is to be held longer than the grid, it may conflict with an already existing note on beat 1 (unless this note does not exist on beat 1). Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what you mean?
what i mean is using something like the "duration" knob on the l/h side for each individual step so that you can achieve a note which is for example 1.245 steps long by using step 1 at full length tied to step 2 at 0.245 steps length and not just 1.0 or 2.0 total step length. ie. the step sequencer in the radias softare editor allows such things. it also allows to nudge the sequence stepwise to the left or right or transpose up/down with one single click on the desired direction arrow. with Sonar´s step sequencer i only manage to set a global note duration for the whole lane which affects every note in it- maybe i´m doing something wrong? - I've tried this method before and I personally didn't like it. Maybe it could be set as an option, but I prefer the current method of selecting an empty MIDI track and pressing Alt+5, which takes you straight into the PRV. No need to paint anything.
i can understand your POV, but i have always worked this way- even on hardware: first i set the length of the loop and then i record into that. i am a mediocre player at best and am happy if i manage to play 8 measure in one go i can live with the way it is now, but i have to say i´d feel much more comfortable with the ability to paint in the boundaries. i also think it doesn´t break anything for veteran Sonar users (or more skilled keyboardists in general) as i don´t want the current way to be replaced by "my" way- i´d just like to see my method working aswell of course i could try to learn playing the keyboard properly but i guess my head is stuck in the loop realm anyway. while we´re at it- there´s something i completely forgot to mention in the first place: it´d be incredible if the Matrix view was able to transpose scenes containing MIDI data by keyboard chord input in realtime, arranger keyboard like!

evansmalley No, I already set for "right click sets now" (only) but it stills resets your now time anytime you select a clip or many other similar selections- it's nice to be able to set now times for editing jobs separately from locate destinations, for listening to edits with a preroll. It works as expected here. I can select one or a bunch of clips or even click anywhere in the clips pane and the Now Time doesn't move an inch (or should a say a sample? :-P). This includes drag-select using the Alt key modifier. OK, I just gave this a try and you have to select all before you use either F9 or F10. IOW, you press Ctrl+A and then F9 to select everything after the Now Time and F10 to select everything before the Now Time. BUT, having this ability with just one key press is much easier of course. Oh, I see what you mean now. Unfortunately, the only way you can get close to this is by adding more steps. I believe you can add a total of 16 steps per beat. Maybe if Cakewalk added more steps we wouldn't need that feature? i can understand your POV, but i have always worked this way- even on hardware: first i set the length of the loop and then i record into that. i am a mediocre player at best and am happy if i manage to play 8 measure in one go i can live with the way it is now, but i have to say i´d feel much more comfortable with the ability to paint in the boundaries. i also think it doesn´t break anything for veteran Sonar users (or more skilled keyboardists in general) as i don´t want the current way to be replaced by "my" way- i´d just like to see my method working aswell of course i could try to learn playing the keyboard properly but i guess my head is stuck in the loop realm anyway. while we´re at it- there´s something i completely forgot to mention in the first place: it´d be incredible if the Matrix view was able to transpose scenes containing MIDI data by keyboard chord input in realtime, arranger keyboard like! I understand your POV as well, which is why I said I didn't mind if it was added as an option. That's one thing I like about Sonar, that there are multiple ways of achieving the same goal (at least for most things). This appeals to a wider range of users and that is a plus (cause we don't all like to work the same way). That's basically what I meant. Take care!

elijahlucian hey jose what do you tihnk of my suggestions? Sorry, I missed your previous post. Here are a few! the ability to move around using the middle mouse button (press middle button and drag seems to be a uniform command among many programs, not just daws, in windows) This is already possible. Move the middle mouse wheel to drag vertically and hold down the Ctrl key while moving the middle scroll wheel to move horizontally. The ability to drag and drop samples from browser or windows into the step sequencer! this would save tons of time setting up drum patterns... The Step Sequencer works with MIDI data. Samples are made out of Audio, so there would have to be an Audio to MIDI conversion process in the middle. It also means that, in this process, the audio data needs to be interpreted and assigned to the different lanes in the Step Sequencer. As of today, there's only one company who has been able to do this and that's Celemony (creators of Melodyne). Maybe if Sonar had something similar, this would be possible. But I wouldn't count on it happening any time soon. On the other hand, the Step Sequencer already accepts Step Sequencer Pattern or .ssp files. So you can safe beats and use them over. It allows you to drag them right into the Step Sequencer via the Media Browser. Is not exactly what you want, but is as close to it as it gets. HTH

i know what you mean on the SS, i just have to find a good sampler and figure out a way to make the default SS notes match that sampler. I come from a tracking (.mod) and FL background so this kind of thing is streamlined for that well i find using the scroll button isnt as effective as click-dragging. you're more bound to the XY instead of allowing fluid motion. actually now that im used to melodynes zooming (control+alt + left mouse to zoom and Control Left mouse to pan around.) even a control middle button would be lightyears better than what we have now. i mostly suggest this because i find that when commands are more streamlined thru the OS work gets done more efficiently all around if you know what i mean.

Here's another feature I keep wishing for: when rebuilding the track layers, wouldn't it be great if one had an option to sort the takes numerically (chronologically) from top to bottom? Or a "maintain order (from top to bottom)" - especially when one has done a heap of vocal takes and you need to rebuild but not at the expense of getting lost in the new, ordered layout.

1. global "all solo off" mappable to a keyboard shortcut! 2. set It's not keybindable, but if you click the little "S" button down on the very bottom status bar, it will un-solo everything. Just making sure you knew about that one. 3. couple things from Avid: "select all after now", select all before now"
Ctrl-A F9 Ctrl-A F10 It's more than one key, but still useful.

yeah thanks tarsier both you and jose are right on about that F9 F10 thing... I'm embarrassed not to have noticed it sooner! But thanks- that little combo will come in HANDY for me! THANKS! And I know you can click the solo button, but that's a mouse thing and I do it sooooo often... it's a little thing- but it probably wouldn't be that hard to make it bindable? One of the things I really miss about the old auto locator from the analog machine days is the SINGLE keys to do so many things like locate 1, autoplay latch, etc- when you do that a million times a day I just remember how simple it was... and one button vari-speed... Really appreciate the F9 F10 thing though- that's lots easier than getting out the razor blade and tape! Ev

hey planist, i have edited my fast zoom options but even still it seems to be a bit annoying. is there no way to zoom into all tracks instead of just one? i hate when just one track gets zoomed in yeah the hand tool is much more effective than anything else sonar has at the moment. also it is a more widely used shortcut. in my opinion shortcuts should be as close to 'habit' as they can be.

I see what you mean. The closest thing Sonar has is the Navigator View. Press "D" on your QWERTY keyboard to enable/disable it. Then you can rezise the green box however you want to zoom in/out as well as drag it around your project to navigate. It's not as streamlined as what you propose, but the functionality is there. HTH

There is a keybound solution I know of- just clumsy- first bind /track status/ >/solo track/ to something... (for me that's shift+S, all track status's are bound to shift+ like Mute = Shift+M, Record = Shift+R, etc) then if you want to globally unsolo all- Ctrl+A > Ctrl+S > Ctrl+S again (that's select all, solo all, unsolo all by toggle) works... just silly... but sometimes it's faster than stopping everything and mousing to the tiny little box. Works for record enable all and un-record enable all, input echo all on/off too...

I haven't read the whole thread so some of my suggestions may already been mentioned. I'm also still on Sonar 6 PE so if some of my suggestions are implemented in newer versions of Sonar, let me know. :) 1. Hide/show all midi/muted/soloed tracks in Console View. Make it work more like the track manager view (or whatever it's called. Shortcut "m"). I use mostly virtual instruments in my projects and when I'm mixing I don't want to see my midi tracks in the Console View. Now I have to hide the midi tracks one by one. 2. Export multiple audio clips as multiple audio files in one operation (with auto naming feature). Let's say I'm developing a sample library and I do all my recording, editing and processing inside Sonar. I want to be able to select multiple audio clips (let's say 10 separate audio clips of a kick drum) and export them in one operation, give it the name "kick", and they will be named "kick_01.wav", "kick_02.wav", etc. 3. Console View Snapshots. When mixing it would be great to take a snapshot of all the volume faders, panning etc. in the Console View. Plugins like Eq, reverb etc could be included in the snapshot by right clicking on them and chose "Include In Snapshot". In that way the settings in the Eq would be saved in the snapshot. Now, during mixing you could quickly do a A/B comparison between different mixes by chosing different snapshots. 4. This is not a workflow request but I'll add it anyway. Make a downloadable and (preferably) cheaper "Core Edition" of Sonar which includes all the fx plugins like eq, reverb, compressor, etc but none of the virtual instruments and soft synths. I use only 3rd party virtual instruments and soft synths and have no need for the ones included with Sonar and I imagine I'm not the only one.

And, it is almost August. I am sad the 1-year product-purchase cycle, with a 6-month update window, continues to interfere with fixes and improvements. I am currently using Quickbooks 2007, and I still get updates. And windows 7 is a year old and it has significant unfixed video and explorer issues. I do not mind paying a yearly fee. But, I really want the program to be on a more reasonable update schedule. Monthly would be GREAT. I think this year's Sonar upgrades should be at least $50 more than last year. And for that I will want fixes and changes immediately. Set up a subscription program: Charge me $60 quarterly. Even better, a pay-per-use subscription: dudes who use the software for income, pay more, with a base fee of $200. This includes a default number of 100 uses. We need a new way of approaching Sonar's changes as "A process of Ongoing Improvement." And for me this means send me the fix when it is coded. Not 9 months later. Charge me for the fix, and new stuff. I would rather pay more and have it now. Sonar is supposed to be the "flagship" (very stupid term), and as such should cost appropriately. On topic: Some of the stuff in the OP's list of additions could have been implemented, in some fashion, years ago. And yet, it is nearly August, 2010! And now we are in the Sonar-discount season of limbo. J ------------------------------ Definitely thought we would have cities on the moon by now. This is a sadness most profound.

What a musty thread. The optimist in me sees the possibility that the just announced Sonar X1 may be Cakewalk's response to this thread and to the workflow "manifesto" that was submitted this time last year. Here's a video of Brandon showing off X1. http://www.sonicstate.com...-exclusive-first-look/ The first few minutes of the vid almost sound like talking points taken from our submission. If so, then that's great. Of course the manifesto might have had zero influence on what x1 is. It's still great. Because this was the kind of move that Cakewalk had to make. So good for them.

Marah Here's a video of Brandon showing off X1. http://www.sonicstate.com...-exclusive-first-look/ Thanks, Marah. This video has me way more excited than the preview on the CW site. I'm now chomping at the bit for multi-dock, screen sets and smart tools. Skipped the 8.5 upgrade until a few days ago when it was announced that you get a free X1 upgrade with a $99 8.5 upgrade today. The next month is probably going to go by rather slowly.

It's interesting - given all the "Oh GAWD, they've ignored us AGAIN" griping going on elsewhere - to see how many of the issues raised in the Top Ten issues in this thread have actually been addressed to some extent in X1.

After watching the video, none of the real day-to-day recording issues are addressed. Things like: KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS for "all solos off", "all records safe", go to "locate 1 - 99", go to "current locate", (not "current selection now time"- important distinction!). "Latency for tracking/ Latency for mixing", auto-play on/off latch, auto-record (from "locate/auto-play) on/off latch... stuff like that. Shortcut keys I need all the time. Essential day-to-day recording issues in the DAW like: Vari-Speed, Media Management (not a better loop/chain/etc browser- but the new browser itself is a good thing!), and no radically improved video implementation. I use and make money from Sonar every day- it's the best DAW musically as far as I'm concerned- easily. Cake is the best company, too. But I DO wish the new improvements weren't just about better "dockable" views and GUI's and looks... I just need the real recording tools much more! Because I record music for clients on the clock, not just look at the screens.
