I don't know if this has been proposed, but an elegant solution might be "VSTi Chains".
We already have the ability to save EFX chains.
Cakewalk could create a plugin that could host plugins (and provide MIDI control/routing/etc like you'd find in Cantibile and Forte).  This wouldn't require any architecture changes... and would allow you to effectively work with single or multiple tracks.

I'd prefer MIDI sends from track to track. Seems so much more versatile to me.
It would also open up many other creative uses. Like for example use a gate which triggers a MIDI note when it opens on your kick drum track and route the MIDI to a track with a sampler or tone generator to replace/layer the audio kick sound. That would of course need MIDI send capability on audio tracks as well...

The concept of Kore was a great one for this. It's like a daw in a daw. Very powerful.

This topic is as Old as the hills, and I too would like to see an integration in X1.

Ages ago I came from FL studio (having this layered functionality) and I posted this thread back then :http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?high=&m=2008232&mpage=1#2011736.

What is comes down to is workflow.  Each method has it's pro's and con's.  The OP, like me, creates sounds by means of layering and auditions them with MIDI keyboard without even having the need to records a single note of MIDI data before my final sound is ready.

And when I get to recording my ONE midi track, I have NO need to have multiple midi for each synth cause I've designed my layer to be the way I like it as I play it live...

Yeah, that's exactly the thing, isn't it? The duplicate track method is fine for layering things after the fact. But if you want to actually sit and play a composite sound, you're fairly restricted. It makes a certain class of experimentation quite difficult.
