BlixYZ Strummer, why so much hate? 20,028 posts and mine offends? If it's so pointless, walk away and don't wast another precious second on it. Why you keep comin back? Just trying to learn and have some fun here! (sheesh) No hate whatsoever here James. No offense caused either. I just cannot for the life of me understand the thread title. If you'd asked "S ame song mixed two different ways. Which do you prefer?" then at least we'd have known exactly what we were being asked to decide. This kind of discussion goes on every minute of every day down in our very own Songs Forum, which is really where this should have been posted if truth be told. But honestly man, I intended no hate or malice toward you.

And looking back through the thread, I'm clearly not the only person who believed the connotation of the thread title was that we were supposed to be comparing DAW's. Again, I apologise if appear to have come on a bit strong, that was never my intention.

I'm standing by the thread title. It in no way implies anything other than what it says- The same exact song (identical track data) mixed in two different DAWs. But I appreciate your reply. I was feeling attacked and I couldn't figure out why. Now I can see that you are a gentleman. Also, I've had too much wine this evening :)

I thought the song was good and enjoyed this post. Yeah, it wasn't scientific or whatever. Who cares. Thanks for sharing. With the way some people carry on I wouldn't be surprised you would ever want to do it again. Shame!

☄ Helpful
To repeat myself, I much preferred Girl over Girl2 for all the reasons laid out in my first post on this thread. But the lesson for James at BlixYZ is to believe in his mix and not always be too swayed by other people's opinions. I mixed one of our bands songs a few years ago and the lead guitarist was all over me to change the mix to his liking - mainly to pull down the snare and the lead vox. I ended up meeting him half-way, they were lower than I liked and louder than he liked. A few months later, after having shared the song with musicians he respected, he complained to me that the vox and the snare were not loud enough, and why didn't I know that in modern music, vox and snare were king. I could have murdered him at that stage so here's my point... As a mix engineer, you are an artist. If you were a painter, would you tolerate people walking into your studio and telling you to put this colour here, that object there? No - you have to believe in what you are doing. If you took everyone's advice everything would end up a shade of dirty brown. Will everyone like your art? - No.

Again, I apologise if appear to have come on a bit strong, that was never my intention. I agree. For sure most people started to read this thread as if it was a DAW comparison, because that clearly is what the title implies, IMO. The misunderstandings were not only understandable, they were inevitable.

I saw it as a light-hearted "In spite of all the theoretical debates" kind of thread at the very opposite end of those threads which go on for 20 pages comparing the merits of 192 khz vs 44 khz and whether they're audible. Putting things back into perspective, if you will. For all the theoretical knowledge and the supposedly audible differences between the mix engines, no one can tell which DAW was used by the end results alone, which is what I thought this thread was about. In the end, how many more time the comparisons have to be made? Danny just posted 3 clips render in 3 different DAWs a few days ago in that other thread. I see this one as a pragmatic response to that thread and similar ones - they funny but a bit sterile.

I'm not even sure that the subjective "better" even matters anymore. Almost any mix can be dissembled and analysed to death and argued over as to what and which is "better" but to what end? If there are no agreed upon standards then what difference does it make out where the audio rubber meets the road? I've heard many modern mixes which were purposely done to sound as crappy and "lo-fi" as possible...a goodly number of these were hit records. And, if clarity, balance, openness and depth were the criteria being attempted...were woeful failures. And yet they weren't...cause that stuff didn't matter. I don't think the Kingsmen's version of "Louie Louie" is a very good mix...yet I love it near to death. Go figure. My joking about "Girl" being louder than "Girl2" was just that and meant to show one misguided trait that we all fall prey to at one time or another. But judging by what I've been taught and followed lo these many years "Girl" was way more "open" and "expansive" and better balanced to my ears...that's why I picked it. Good to know The Colonel and I see eye to eye...on occasion;-) Glad also to hear that "Girl" was done with Sonar. Tho that's pretty meaningless also. Still fun tho.

First off - I enjoy listening to your tune - very well crafted. I had a little time while I restrung a guitar, so I loaded up both versions and popped between the two. As far as comparing the two mixes - I must admit that I don't have a clear favorite - I charged right out of the gate like Girl over Girl2 due to the initiall impact at the start of the tune - but then found that I preferred the bass in Girl... but then again I really like the prominence of the vocals in Girl2 - OH CRAP! - I just discovered I wound the G string on the D tuning peg. I guess dividing my attention between two tasls really is to the detriment of both. Good thing I can't see well enough to text while driving : 0. Bottom line: Very nice song and performance. I found this exercise and many of the comments to be quite constructive and I commend you for starting this thread!

I believe Girl to be a much better overall mix than Girl2. It is missing stuff that Girl2 has, primarily bass, but it's much clearer. Pretty much what Brandon said is what I think. The vocals are the primary reason I prefer Girl over Girl2. Though I think they are now just a tad too loud. I'd bring em down by about 1-2 dB.
