Ok - Pro Tools 11 vs Sonar
Is it just me - or are the "new and revolutionary" features Avid is now advertising as part of the new PT11 all features that Sonar has included for years? If you watch the new promo video, guys are literally hugging each other, and I'm yelling at the screen "we've been doing that forever with Cake". I realize the HD guys are locked in with it. But I've tried PT10 at home and I didn't care for it as it was missing a lot of Sonar's features. It seems they've closed the gap some, but for them to be announcing those gap closers as game changers ...? Am I missing something here? What did they accomplish with 11 that hasn't been accomplished for years with Sonar? Offline bounce? 64 bit? Really? My apologies if this has already been done. I did a quick search in this forum and didn't get a hit.

Yes you are right. Sonar (and other DAW's) too have had these things for years. But they have to trumpet it now and make some money. It is all advertising. I remember what Tom Oberheim said to me one day and that was you must not get hooked into or believe your own advertising! His ads at the time were saying it was the only analog synth worth having but as he said and we all knew there were others! What we have to find out now is how much to go from PT10 to PT11. It won't be free folks! Avid are always charging high prices and I am sure this won't be an exception. Just found something and it has been mentioned on line that upgrade costs are from $300 to $500 depending on what version you have. So from PT10 it might be $300! (don't quote me on this) Let us say it is then, is it worth it? My son's girlfriend recently bought a second hand MBox 2 Mini and a copy of PT8. All was well until she upgraded her Mac operating system (to 10.7.5) . Ooops now the MBox does not work at all and PT8 definitely won't work. I got MBox back on line but there is not even an upgrade path from PT8 to PT10. On her current new Mac OS PT8 won't even work and she has to spend $700 now to get PT10 or PT11. Pretty bad really don't you think. At least most other DAW's will still install and work under not the latest OS. PT11 is boasting a new audio engine though and it is meant to be way more efficient so let us see when the reviews start coming out. That could be a good thing. Sonar does not have a new audio engine (yet!). Some changes yes but not new. Studio One has a new audio engine as well from the start that is. One of the few that do. AVID are very good at charging a lot of money, be aware. For the cost of some of these upgrades (eg $500) you could buy a whole new program so you would be mad not to consider it. And remember even if you buy PT10 or PT11 now new, you have to spend another $700 (to get the Production Tool Kit) just to bring up to the same speed as Sonar and other DAW's for features and instruments and content etc..

Jeff Evans So from PT10 it might be $300! (don't quote me on this) Let us say it is then, is it worth it? It's $299 for PT10 to 11 Native. Is it worth it, eh sure. For x64 and the new engine which is bragging multiple core efficiencies and the new AAX plugins with low latency, it's good. Did Sonar have all this years ago, yep. Are they rock solid with no lock ups during long recording sessions and are the automation and recording lanes bug free, eh no. I like the PT stability, seriously. But, I can't stand their midi implementation, so archaic. For now, I am a dueling DAW man. Horses for courses.

It's seems quite a few of the major DAWS are playing cathup up with Sonar X2, or at least there latest marketing videos are all about things that were introduced in Sonar X1. Modular channel strips, Window Docking, Screensets, Take Lanes and Comping. No doubt they're all currently working on implementing Touch. So whilst I've been considering having a dirty affair with Samplitude Pro X or Studio One V2 of late, it seems they're still playing cath up to the features I already have. The only change I can see would be a possible benefit or degradation in the workflow. Just my thoughts Dean

Ooof, let's not open this can of worms again... I have always said that Sonar is the musicians choice, PT is the engineer's choice. But even that is changing... slowly. HOWEVER.. I use PT9 native on a laptop for one thing only: live recording of concerts. Why? It's the ONLY DAW that has NEVER crashed on me at a gig. When Sonar can beat that, I'll change my live rig gladly :O)

Heres the low down on PT11 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6-rDi7t348 I'm not really going "oooooooooooh!" on this one.... I need it for post production but really fear the upgrade price. Sods law I only bought PT10 a few months ago as well.

If only Sonar had notation as good as PT. @vintagevibe: +10 - Damn straight. @LJB: I would agree that Sonar is for musicians and PT is for engineers, however, what the heck is such a great notation function doing in PT 9 (for engineers)? If PT9 is stable for tracking and has superior notation, is it worth upgrading to from PT MP9? The dropping of wrapper support of VST / VSTi's in PT11 has me concerned, not to mention the big money to upgrade. I'm wondering if I should consider a dual program approach. Anyone know how well FxExpanion's vst wrappers work inside of PT9?

depends on what you use it for? But you will be able to run PT10 and PT11 side by side (Much like Sonar versions can) I really think its all too pricey tbh. I scathe Avid and PT and its a necassary evil for me...I use Sonar for all my music and sound design work (because I love it and have been a Cakewalk user for well over ten years) but I have been forced to use PT for my film/delivery work as avid have the "industry standard" asset completely locked down. Try going to a dubbing studio and saying to the dubbing mixer you work in Sonar. They usually cite they have never heard of it and then you feel like a Reaper user! A part of the terms and conditions for selling a Feature film to market place via a distribution company...i.e Deliverables, they clearly state they need PT sessions for all the different mixes, i.e M&E, DME, LTRT, 5:1 etc etc.... Sonar just cant compete in that respect and its a crying shame. I would rather not use PT at all, but there you go. pbognar markyzno the wrapper works kind OK(ish)...around 65% of my VST's work in PT 10 pbognar vintagevibe If only Sonar had notation as good as PT. @vintagevibe: +10 - Damn straight. @LJB: I would agree that Sonar is for musicians and PT is for engineers, however, what the heck is such a great notation function doing in PT 9 (for engineers)? I've got a big richard. You obviously like my richard, because you have the same one. Can we stroke each other's richards? Please, it feels so good. Yes, ProTools is just catching up to some of the features that Sonar has. The main reason, no matter what you might think to fool yourselves, is that those features just weren't important enough to the people that pay Avid's bills. This is a 20% of the people paying 80% of the bills kind of thing. The people that pay for the service plans & technical support & all that stuff. Sonar has a product that would most likely satisfy the 80% most of us would fit in that 80% & while Avid may appreciate our business, while Avid is attempting to increase its market share among that 80%, we're really on the back burner. There's really no need to compare Sonar to Pro Tools. Totally different products. Sonar struggles in the arena Pro Tools shines. Pro Tools struggles in the arena Sonar shines. There is some overlap & you're going to choose the tool that helps you do what you do the way you want to do it. I know it's easier to believe we are smarter than the people who run the big studios, production houses, media houses...... they're all just throwing money away, because they don't know any better. Yeah, right.

Pro Tools is the kind of hype that gets used day in day out in the vast majority of the professional commercial studios to record and mix almost anyone who is someone in the industry. So while some wise people in all their wisdom ridiculed things like the lack of offline bounce or PT being 32 bit only, the people who actually do this for a living - those who have gold and platinum records hanging on their wall - those people were using a 32 bit application and making millions of dollars. No one makes as much noise about Pro Tools as the Pro Tools haters. Those folks can go on for day rationalizing why this or that app is so much better and how superior this or that is. Meanwhile - pros get the job done using Pro Tools, day in, day out. Their thing is mixing music, not comparing specs.

Very well said Rain. At last the voice of reason. And like I have been saying the reason they are making millions of dollars using PT and 32 bit apps is because the music is good. Simple as that really. When the music is good nothing else really matters. I am in Beatles mode right now reading a great book on John Lennon called 'Lennon' by Tim Riley. They had pretty restricted things back then, but the music! WOW! The writing and the emotion and the music just transcends it all.

So the rest of 90% rest of the production and music (99,999% of all films) made by other software's then Pro Tools that are in x64bit doesn't cut it? I would say the vast majority users use Cubase, Nuendo, SONAR X2, LOGIC PRO, STUDIO ONE, Live, Samplitude and DP not Pro Tools. I would estimate that 90% in Europe use Cubase, Nuendo, Logic PRO, Studio one and Live. The most of all top producers, Red One, Swedish House Mafia, Max Martin + many of my other colleges that are from Sweden use Logic PRO or Cubase. I'm the only one from Sweden using SONAR X2 that I know of... @Jeff You seem to miss the biggest part that Beatles and Tim used the state of the art cutting edge of the technologies in the their time. If it was today they wouldn't consider use any x32bit applications like Pro Tools. I hope you finally learn something by reading their books and draw your own conclusion.

I'm the only one from Sweden using SONAR X2 that I know of... Not saying that other products don't cut it Freddie - I'm saying that a lot of the users of those software seem to have some kind on an inferiority complex so they are constantly feeling the need to justify their choice and bash Pro Tools. I was talking about commercial recording studios putting out recordings that are known outside their respective scene.. You know? About real engineers, who know how to mic a drum or a guitar cabinet. Who mix other things than samples and synths. I'm talking about guys like Joe Baressi, recording Tool or Queens of the Stone Age. Listen to 10 000 Days by Tool, or to the last Soundgarden and then tell me what's wrong w/ Pro Tools again. Tell me what they lack compared to all the amazing chart toppers that were produced using Cubase. Come to Las Vegas and hear the amazing remixes and the impeccable quality of the Beatles music in the show Love. I guess Abbey Road couldn't afford Sonar and it's amazing 64 Bit engine, so they had to make due w/ Pro Tools. I sat there for 2 hours and kept thinking: Poor, poor George Martin! if only PT had been 64 bit... If only... NOT. I'll tell you this - in my travels and among all the musicians I've met, all the studios I have visited in the last two years - private and commercial - I've seen NOTHING but Pro Tools and Logic. One guy that uses DP instead of Logic. One. I'm not saying that other software isn't used by some people or that it isn't adequate. Sonar is good, Cubase is good, Nuendo is good... But the fact that they are 64 bit or this or that doesn't mean a thing in the face of the very simple fact that the industry uses Pro Tools. And by industry, I don't mean the new breed of so-called independent professional DJ/Producers defecating "beats" on the internet out of their mom's house basement, remixing each other and gigging at the corner pub once a month. Since DAWs and the internet, it's like there's no amateur anywhere anymore.

aye +1 Rain Freddie H Rain @ Rain, what a joke! WDI vicsant Everything you wanted to know about PT 11 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6-rDi7t348 Tried to watch it but felt like I was listening to the announcers of a golf match. Is there a faster version of it like say 20 seconds. At least show like a cartoon or something in the background. Common, entertain me a little. After about a minute my mind was going blah blah blah, bla blah blah blah. Which illustrates my point. Although there are similarities & some overlap, most of us don't need & aren't interested in what ProTools is intended to do. For those that need all that "blah blah blah, bla blah blah balh" there is no substitute, which is why they've been in business.... nigh, high demand for years. There is no market for "Sonar Support" you're not going to get a job, or a contract to install, maintain, & repair a Sonar system. You're not going to make any money as a Sonar regional sales associate. All that stuff in that video is important to someone & they will spend thousands of dollars to get it. Comparing Sonar to ProTools is like comparing a Roland 2480 to a complete recording studio. Yeah, you can produce a quality product with the Roland, but there are some things, you just can't do. The problem here, is that there are some people who just can't accept that.

Yeah, ProTools is really part of a larger infrastructure of hardware, software, paid support, plus a bit of the lock-in effect of being the industry (and importantly, formal training) standard. I don't think "Pro" necessarily means "best", it means "Pro". In terms of a fairly standardised working environment for projects to easily pass from studio to studio, and for it to be easy to find a professional user of, Pro Tools is basically it. In terms of what these bits of software can do, they're really all roughly the same. Everything's got a few things that something else hasn't. 90%, they're about equivalent.

I just did a mix in ProTools 10 at someone else's studio the other week. And you know, it was fine. To me, all this nitpicking about this DAW or that DAW is bizarre, when there actually isn't a *bad* one out there.

You know? About real engineers, who know how to mic a drum or a guitar cabinet. Who mix other things than samples and synths. I'm talking about guys like Joe Baressi, recording Tool or Queens of the Stone Age. Though ProTools is very common, there are folks in the industry who aren't using ProTools or Logic. Mastering Engineers, Film and Game Composers, Mix Engineers, Record Company Execs, Radio Production Engineers, etc. These folks have looked at what ProTools offers vs. the cost... and decided Sonar, Cubase/Nuendo, Samplitude/Sequoia, DP, etc was a better fit. Many of these folks are clients... so I know they exist. ie: Recent client works on numerous 30 minute radio spots each week. Offline bounce saves this client literally hours of production time each/every week. A professional isn't hired because of the tools he/she uses. They're hired based on reputation and results. If a client cares more about your DAW software than your skills as an engineer, run the opposite direction.
