mudgel Noel's already explained that the way ARA works is not useful in something like notation either in entering MIDI data via notation or exporting a score via notation. ARA has a look ahead function for existing AUDIO data and that's how it works.
This is my layman's understanding of what Noël said.
As for anyone that wants to enter MIDI data through Sonars notation I'd recommend they get some tips from jsg here on the forum. He seems to have no problem do complex orchestrationsing it.
If a notaion company would implement Re-Wire so that it sent multitrack MIDI data to the host you could notate to VST set up in the host but nobody does that.
That would sure be a great idea. As it is now I always have to decide where notation cuts into a project if the all. Sometimes it's the best way for me to enter MIDI data so I start using Sonar staff view. Other times a finished score is an important element so I start the project in Notion 4 then bring the MIDI across to Sonar. Can get a little convoluted at times. At times I use another daw for its particular work flow so it's never as straight forward as I'd like. The only time things are pretty routine is for recording audio

Hi Mudgel: In case you were replying to one of my posts: You may be misunderstanding me. What I'm saying is it would be great if Cakewalk could innovate some implementation embedded in SONAR whereby using the professional notation software ( such as Finale and Sibelius) in SONAR would be integrated as good as Cakewalk integrated ARA in SONAR to use the Celemony Melodyne software. And if Cakewalk could innovate such an implementation it would perhaps be easier to do that than to make a revision to the Staff View in an attempt to appease the years of user requests to update SONAR to have better and more professional notation features. This may be something that is super hard to do, but I'm just entertaining the thought. And, I still would like to see the Cakewalk MP3 Encoder updated to include an option for Average Bit Rate encoding, and if Cakewalk does that, they may as well, update to the most recent version of LAME version 3.99.5.
My post was a reference back to Craig post where he mentioned ARA. I was simply correcting people's understanding of how it could be used as Noel corrected me on the very same line of the king with notation. My further comments were in connection to a strong debate between a couple of very passionate Sonar users on the notation subject. I learned how thoroughly useful Sonar staff view can be in entering MIDI data. The member is jsg and he's extremely competent when it comes to the subject. Hope that's clear. I mostly use my mobile for posting and often a quote doesn't come across as in the post where you thought I maybe referring to your comments.

BTW Thomas B, As to the mp3 encoder. I think Cakewalk rename their lame . dll to ttslame. If you download and rename the latest lame dll to that and locate it in the correct folder then Sonar will use it.

IMO all that really needs to happen is have a 3rd party notation app the sends multi channel MIDI. That way you could setup and mix all your VST instruments in the host DAW and just use the notation app to notate. If the 64bit Re-Wire implementation was solid it would be very similar to having a notation window in the DAW. And you could either dump the MIDI into the host for mixdown or do a real time Re-Wired mix. Currently no notation app does this although in mu understanding it is within the Re-Wire spec.

SimpleM Thank you for the useful response Keni. I'm afraid several of the fanboys got their panties in a bunch over the rant/lament part of my OP and could not see that I was asking the questions that a few of you have taken the time to answer.
You wrote a 200 word rant and embedded in the middle was a 6 word question. The title did not help either, and thanks for calling us fanboys ;). I apologise for any offence.
Unfortunately the fanboys often ruin this forum. I saw a guy flamed a few years ago because he didn't like the new GUI and was switching DAWs. The only reason you don't see more of these rants is because they've moved on to competitors like Reaper and Cubase or they just got tired of this forum. Some of you treat Sonar like it's a religion. In other parts of reality you will see similar threads in other DAW forums. See Live and Sony for examples. Flame suit not needed.

Anderton Not to drag this out any further, but here's how it works on the Interwebz. 1. Person A's post is misinterpreted as being out of line.2. Persons B, C, D, and E jump on Person A for being out of line.3. Person A, not realizing what he said could be considered out of line by rational people, gets defensive and attacks persons B, C, D, and E.4. Loop steps 2-3 multiple times. There are only four possible endings. 1. Deterioration into giant flame war. Moderator closes thread.2. Realization by one or more parties that things have gotten out of control. Apologies. Group hug.3. Person A really is a jerk and was not misinterpreted. If same crap continues to happen, person A gets banned eventually4. Sun collapses into a dwarf star. All life on earth ends. Or person A is being an arse. Person b,c,d,e says he's being an arse because he is being an arse. Person f says he's not an arse Person A says he is not an arse Person b,c, and d get defensive. E reconsiders and realised he is probably an arse as well. Things get confusing. World explodes.

Did you get an idea to what the poster was referring too? What of there were no 3rd party addons? Then you have to market the improvements. Sonar 8.5 to X1, no need for 3rd party stuff and it would still sell. There comes to a point where advanced users are not interested in 3rd party apps and are more concerned what's under the hood. I've come across plenty of people who dropped other DAWs for Reaper only because of it's efficient audio engine or basically do recording where they need little. The most ignored request in Sonar has been improvement to the staff view. Now they use Cubase. I've bought licenses of Sonar since Sonar 2. They always do something to pull you in. It is not my main DAW but there are other reasons I always upgrade. They offer great deals to existing users and I also support companies that have the I trust you attitude towards the end user. From their surveys (always fill those out please) they think it is important too. What the OP inquired is not uncommon, he just chose the wrong forum. If we were concerned about 3rd party addons, that could mean we haven't dug deep enough into an app to know all of it's features.

Try not taking criticisms of software so seriously. You fit the fanboy image to a tee. EastWest forums would be a great place for you. They ban people for such threads as these. The perfect utopia. I bet 10-1 the OP still spends money on a future license of Sonar.

John I would hope that the Staff View gets an upgrade soon. I think it will add a lot more to the value of the X series.
I understand. We know this has been requested but there's a lot more involved. We'll discuss it of course.
It's good to hear that it is even being discussed.

We are always looking for ways to improve the product. The operative word is discussed though. That doesn't mean we will implement it but obviously this has been brought up a time or two :) Back to the OP's point or concern. We put a lot of work into core workflow, features and stability. ARA and VST3 were huge undertakings and we are continuing to improve these new features. We also spent a lot of time on comping and tried to not just implement it but make it the very best we could. We also have to look at plugins and synths that are included. In X3, we replaced many of the old plugins with newer ones that are much better. The question of whether to go with third party or do it here is always a trade off. With pitch correction for example, we could look at doing it ourselves at the cost of dev time that could be used on other parts of the program or we could go with the industry leader, Melodyne and add ARA. I think we made a great choice. And Melodyne Essential is not an LE version. It sells for $99. We upgraded our synths and plugins on many levels. While some existing users may not care about some or all of them, I bet a ton of new users and existing users are loving it. If we never updated these plugins and synths, people would be buying products with synths and plugins that are 15-20 years old. Honestly, I feel synths and FX need to evolve as well. We did it with ProChannel. None of that stuff is lite at all...just because we include it in the program. We continue to work on DSP and we try to pick our battles wisely. And the final note on this issue...the $149 you pay for the upgrades is huge savings compared to what you would pay individually for all the components. Start adding up all the new stuff you'll probably get well past $500. Even if you upgraded for just the new workflow features and one or two of the new plugins, it would still be a bargain. And who knows, in the process you might find a a few new plugins you will really enjoy. I'm bias of course but I really think the upgrade is a great value and that we have much more affordable pricing compared to our competitors. Plus we give away a ton of free stuff and are constantly putting out tips, videos, and other education material to help guide users along :)

mudgel BTW Thomas B, As to the mp3 encoder. I think Cakewalk rename their lame . dll to ttslame. If you download and rename the latest lame dll to that and locate it in the correct folder then Sonar will use it.
I think updating to another LAME version requires that it has to be compiled. Back in SONAR 8.5 days a forum user named jcatena compiled an updated version of the lame mp3 encoder ( http://forum.cakewalk.com/Updated-mp3-encoder-3982-m1772420.aspx?high=ttslame,) using the latest LAME version at that time, Lame 3.98.2, and he provided a link to the download for the compiled TTSLAME.dll files for 32bit and 64bit. That was really nice of him. I'm currently using those updated dlls. I would really like to see an included option for Average Bit Rate encoding. SONAR is a Pro app, so I would like to see that option included. There are free mp3 encoders that are more comprehensive than SONAR in options for encoding mp3 files (such as LAME Front End ( http://www.pazera-software.com/products/lame-front-end/) , but that means, you have to leave SONAR to use them. I paid $19.99 for the Cakewalk MP3 Encoder, and just think it would be nice if it was at least as comprehensive in encoding options as the free LAME Front End. I mean, how hard can it be to include an option for Average Bit Rate encoding support in the Cakewalk MP3 Encoder? Just wishful thinking. I guess. And whether the Cakewalk MP3 Encoder gets updated or nor, I'm still pro SONAR. :) Thanks for your reply. :)

mettelus As far as "bait and switch" with Melodyne... 1) Melodyne Essential will suit many user's needs without the upgrade to Editor. 2) The upgrade to Editor was a bargain as well ($150 versus $300). 3) Melodyne released a patch to improve the ARA functionality (with X3) so this partnership is a great one. X3 coming out of the chute with ARA on board and it being as nice as it is is rather impressive to me.
+1 on your #1. The version of Melodyne that is included in X3 is fine. It's not like it locks up after 30 days. As for Addictive Drums, I am a new fan. They are amazing. The only thing I upgraded so far was Breverb.

Andrew Rossa [Cakewalk] Back to the OP's point or concern. We put a lot of work into core workflow, features and stability. ARA and VST3 were huge undertakings and we are continuing to improve these new features. We also spent a lot of time on comping and tried to not just implement it but make it the very best we could.
Personally I think ARA and VST3 alone are worth the price of the upgrade. After using X3 for a few weeks now I think it is far and away the best X series you've done. While I don't look for Cakewalk to provide additional plugs and think it is great that you do for those that may need them. With regard to SV: I do not read or write music well but I am capable of it. When I first started really using Sonar (around 7) I tried SV and was really hoping that I could use it as a tool to improve my understanding of notation. I was kind of scratching my head to tell the truth and I've never gone back to attempt using it...PRV all the way. So a big plus for SV enhancements. Regards,
Mike Win8(64), Sonar X3e(64) w/ RME Fireface UFX.

The value-for-money thing is always going to vary subjectively, based on what you do and don't need. For me, the new comping method has radically improved my day to day working life, and the Melodyne integration comes just behind that in terms of general usefulness (I never could get along with VVocal). I've also been using Lounge Lizard on a project, and just invoiced for a job with lots of BiFilter2 on it. So it's paid for itself several times over already, for me. There have been less meaningful updates for me in the past; I never use the step sequencer or matrix view for example. So subjectively, they weren't value items for me. Looking at it a bit more objectively though, I think the most anyone can say is "this doesn't offer much for me". I don't think there's ever been a version of Sonar that you could say was poor value in a general sense.

If you've been around a while, you're likely going to have acquired favored virtual instruments and plugins. For these folks, the bundled additions aren't as big a "draw/enticement". For the beginner... or those without preferred solutions, the bundled additions are incredible value. Very similar to the Komplete bundles. If you don't have any 3rd party virtual instruments/libraries/plugins, it's hard to beat the value of Komplete 9/Ultimate. If you already own Komplete 8, Komplete 9 is "much less exciting"... but still worth the investment. I wouldn't base the decision to upgrade to X3 on "additional content"... but rather the improvements/enhancements to Sonar itself. VST3, ARA, Colors, and Comping are all solid improvements that make hour-to-hour use of Sonar a better experience. If those things are useful to you, then the $149 upgrade is easily justified. The additional content bundled with X3 certainly isn't a step backwards compared to earlier releases. You're getting full versions of instruments/plugins. Some are tied specifically to Sonar (Blue Tubes). This is due to license issues. If all versions were unrestricted, the cost would be significantly higher.

Agreed. Also, consider that it costs twice as much to cross-grade to Studio One 2 Pro for comparable VST3, ARA and Comping features (along with Melodyne Essential) as in the X3 Producer upgrade.

That doesn't mean we will implement it but obviously this has been brought up a time or two :)
Thanks Andrew, at least we know where we stand (for the foreseeable future ) with regard to the SV. It would be crazy not assume that the "deciders" have separated the notation issue into the Staff Editing versus the Notation Printing functionality. There are lot's of options out there for exporting MIDI data into a dedicated printing program. As jsg has shown, anything is possible using just the SV and the Event Viewer (and for others, the combination of the SV and PRV) - with printing left to a dedicated program. This has to be factored in when looking at Sonar's other unique features and workflow. For those who require a step up in notation editing, there are and probably will be alternatives. There are of course trade-offs - each program is unique in it's approach, workflow, and audience. Again, Sonar certainly has it's unique strengths. hmmm... just a thought - is there a way to display a clip or track of MIDI data with both the PRV and SV, one above the other?
