but I still don't understand the need of a sub-bus.

IIRC, his Sub is mostly for the split routing.

There's still a use for a SUBMASTER type bus though. I put all my final mix processing on mine (tape emulation, console saturation, stereo widening, and sometimes a gentle compression), and my MASTER bus has a freq analyzer and that's it. This way the MASTER bus is a clean path. It also means if I add any late-mix elements I can route synth outs to the MASTER and still have control of the whole mix with a single fader and MS controls.

One benefit to using sends is CPU usage reduction.

Another "soft" reason is that it'll help your mixes gel together a bit more. If you use 40 different verbs on different tracks with tweaked settings you might not get as cohesive of a soundstage than if you routed all your tracks to the same verb with varying levels of intensity.

Is there a reason why you use a lowshelf as a highpass filter in your mixing template instead of using an actual highpass filter ?

A highpass filter is more 'severe'. I guess that my mastering background makes me gravitate toward more gentle EQing.

Hiya, Jonas!

Thanks SO much for the template. It's really nicely done.

I think I've seen "Mix it like a record" discussions on other threads that mention your template as a great starting point.

You've used the "tape saturation" and "analog console" vsts as return effects rather than across the main (or submain) bus. I seem to recall Dye using these across the final output in his setup. What motivated you to keep them separate rather than across the main bus?

(or does it really matter!?)

It's been awhile since I've cracked this template open, but I recall that there are a pair of Cakewalk Tape Sims (?) in the splitter configuration.

Hi Gang!

This is the day you've been waiting for! I have revised and expanded my free mixing template. There are more compressor settings, EQ settings, more reverbs, etc. It incorporates many of the effect settings that I've posted in this forum over the years as well as some ideas that I've borrowed (specifically, the stereo splitter routing). None of this is revolutionary, but it's nice to make the most out of what you have.

You can download the template from my signature.

Blessings,
Jonas

Thank you...but

Will someone tell me how to "install" this template/ zip file into Sonar?

Thanks,
Jeff

JONAS’ MIXING TEMPLATE V2

My mixing template for Sonar 5 Producer Edition has been revised and expanded. This template uses only the included effects with exception of CamelCrusher, a terrific free VST effect. This plug-ins must be installed on your system to take full advantage of this template.

There are EQ settings on each individual track that should be saved as presets. I make no guarantee that these curves will work on any of your tracks! They are just my personal starting points.

The EQ curve on the master bus has dips in the frequency ranges that tend to be most problematic on the mixes I receive for mastering. Again, this curve is probably completely incorrect for your song, but it will cause you to listen to your mix with a different perspective.

None of the compressors, including the one on the master bus, should be doing more than 3-4dB of gain reduction at the loudest part of the song.

The meter on the master bus has been set for RMS. Your final mix output should be at around -20dB RMS.

A hint to the wise: when capturing individual tracks keep the PEAKS to no more than -6dB. Although it may seem counterintuitive, this will allow you to create cleaner and punchier mixes even if you choose to slam the mix with a limiter on the master bus later on. Trust me on this!

The various reverb sends can be used to create depth or width to individual instrument tracks.

CamelCrusher is copyrighted by Camel Audio. For more info please on these and other fine products please visit www.voxengo.com and www.camelaudio.com.

Happy mixing!

The above is from the template txt file..

If you are running Win XP then all you have to do is open the zip file and move the template file you find there to your Sonar template folder. It is called JA Mixing Template3.1.cwt. Then click on the other zip which is the Camel Crusher install file. That will install it. In Sonar open the template and start mixing.

Id like to try this on some of my current songs. How do I import the recorded tracks into this new template?

There are a few ways. If you have per projects folders then goto the audio part of the project folder and select all the clips there and import them into the mix template. Or you can open it if you have it so Sonar will allow more then one project open at a time in options. Then copy the tracks ovet to the new mix template. Or you can drag the files into the mix project one at a time or all at once from win explorer.. Now once you have it filled up save it as your new project in the folder you got the audio files from. Do not save it as the mix template project with out changing the name. I hope this helps. One more way is to mix your project down to a stereo file and import that into the mix template for mastering. I have my own mastering template that I use all the time.

Hey,

I spent the better part of the day today working on a new mix using Jonas' template. I must say that I am totally impressed and sooooo thankful that Jonas was kind enough to make this available. Working with it today has really opened my eyes (and ears) to some new methods (to me) of mixing and the results are fantastic. I don't think I've ever created a better sounding mix!

Now... I have a few questions.

- I'm surprised he did not place a compressor on the piano track. It seems to me that this would be pretty standard.

- Why does he send only the drum overheads track to the drum bus and not the kick and snare tracks as well?

- No compressor on the drum tracks or drum bus seems odd too.

- After adjusting all of my individual track levels during the mix process, I found that the Mix Left and Mix Right buses were overloading by almost 5dB (Peak levels). Consequently, the Master bus is overloading a bit too. Is it OK to reduce the levels (say, 6dB) on each of the Mix Left and Mix Right busses to bring everything down to a respectable level?

Thanks again, Jonas. You Da Man!!!!

Here's a question regarding the template...

Shouldn't the output of the "sub master bus (do not touch)" be set to "None"?

On closer inspection, I realized that the output of the sub master was being to sent to my sound card. This meant that the sub master output AS WELL as the Master output was being sent to my sound card.

So, it should be set to "None" right?

I need to find time to get it to at least Sonar 7..and I have a couple of other crazy signal routing things that I've been contemplating unleashing on the world. Hopefully I can get around to that soon. I'm glad that the old template is still getting a workout!
