Thanks Dave. So the only bus that should be output to my soundcard is my master?

To use these buses/settings for existing projects I have saved the tracks as track templates.

John,

I have downloaded the templates but cant seem to open them with Sonar 8 Producer. I am sure I am missing the obvious. Can you tell me where I would activate the CWT extension on that file?

Any help would be appriciated. I can't wait to see this mixing template in action.

Yes, precisely.

I've been using this template as well, and I do believe the submaster was sent to the soundcard in the original template. Now, I've tweaked mine as well, so I may have altered the routing accidentally, but is the correct routing:

Submaster>Master

or

Submaster> Soundcard

I hate to sound (stupid) and restate liv4ree's question but I do believe there has been much discussion on this subject on the thread and I have probably missed something.

Submaster>Master

This is the correct routing, confirmed by jsaras a few posts ago (otherwise, it really wouldn't be a submaster, or sub anything for that matter )

Hi all,

After threatening to update the template for nearly three years I finally buckled down for an entire day and revised it. You may find some useful information within the bundle file under "File > Info". The download link is found in my signature.

Enjoy,
Jonas

Jonas,

Thanks for this!

If anyone wants to take the time to learn... there is a wealth of mixing information in this template.

A great launch pad to help unravel some of the mysteries in mixing.

You are generous.

Can someone tell me where exactly this file .cwb should be placed within the Sonar folder structure and how i go about using it? I would like to use it at some point. I had the previous template with the extension .cwt on my HD for ages but could never figure out a way to access it.

Sorry to ask daft questions like....but if you DONT ask - etc

red; You can place it on your desktop, and just unpack/open it. It contains a demo song that you probably aren't going to keep as part of the actual template. Once your done tweaking and so on, just save it as a template.
I opened it last night, and this is how I opened/viewed it. When you open the project, go to file/info, Jonas has some notes located there.
I didn't save as a template, I have opted to add the new tweaks to original Jonas template, only because I have added my own items to it. ie; EZD and so on.
My next post will contain a few questions for Jonas that I just know he's going to love answering :)

RE: Free mixing template revised! 2009/04/23 07:11:51 (permalink)
Jonas; in your notes, you mention doing vocals (split bussing) the same way as drums. What would you recommend for vocal bus comp (soft) so far as settings?
I didn't actually get a chance to record anything last night using the split bus method, but can't wait to try it.
As I mentioned above, I'm not saving this as a template, but adding things like the split bus to your original template.
I did have one strange occurrence, the reverb track that you set up above the pink noise has nothing on it. When I open the song/template it tells me that I'm missing some sort of reverb. (I can't remember what the message said)
Thanks a bunch Jonas, your hard work is greatly appreciated.

The template was created with Sonar 7 PE. I used the Cakewalk FX Reverb extensively. It's been around for quite awhile. Hopefully they didn't get rid of it with v8. It's possible I left another plugin that I meant to delete. Let me know.

As far as compressing vocals, you can generally get away with much faster attack times and slower release times.

Once the bundle is opened it can easily be saved as a "Normal" Cakewalk project instead of a "Template" file.

Hi Jonas,

You are using one instance of a Sonitus reverb.

Once I started using your templates I think in 2006 - I became a huge fan of Cakewalk's fxreverb with your EMT Plate setting. A plug I had previously ignored. It is really a great little reverb if used properly. However I am glad to see you created great settings in the Sonitus reverb since I am using S8PE 64 bit as much as possible. Cakewalks DX plugs do not work in 64 bit. I hope they see the need to change that for us users. I have tried to replicate the sound of your EMT Plate from the fxreverb with other reverbs - but no luck. I will keep chipping away - I do like working with S8 64. Very smooth. But I still start all my latest projects in 32 bit because of your great fxreverb settings. :)

You also included a plug called "velocity" that surprisingly opens up for me to tweak, etc. However, I don't believe this plug is on my hard drive. Is there a way to put it there permanently through the use of your template? I have Sonar 3 through 8.

Thanks again! I am learning a lot more advanced techniques by studying and using your templates. My songs sound great through these signal paths - of course I have to tweak - but I love this starting point.

That's a drag. I may try to work with the Pantheon a bit more to see what I can come up with.

I know! I can't believe how many times I turn to the EMT Plate setting you created. It is a great sounding light duty plug for letting singers hear a reverb when tracking as well.

If you can recreate that sound in Pantheon that would be so GREAT!

Thank You Jonas!

First off, Jonas this kills and thanks for the effort!! I've just set this up for one of my tunes and the results are very nice after a few tweaks here and there. I will be doing more with this!! Great learning experience as well, so thanks again. Now for my question...

I notice the fader is pull all the way down on the submaster bus. Is this so the sends are the only thing going out as they are panned hard left and right for stereo separation? Mix Left and Mix Right then get summed at the Master Out.

Jonas,

THANK YOU.

Your other template has been so helpful and has exponentially improved my mixes. It looks like you have gone a couple further on this one, particularly what you have done with the Drum Bus and the two stage compression. Did a quick test and it really does the job, the videos you mention in your info/Notes do a good job of explaining precisely what you are doing with the compression and routing. Spectacular and very nicely done.

Regards
