No need to be a jerk about it, Webb...I am most certainly middle aged (48 this year) and place myself in the same mausoleum. Amazing how people mis-interpret universal commentary as private put-downs, but they are gonna read what they wanna read, no?
ha-universal commentary my arse-you appear aggrieved that all your hard work and advice "went unheeded" and "it bothered you that you spent so much time there with no reward" and then go on to trash the songs forum-"jerkoffs,lousy recordings, lousy songs"" blah blah I remember your "critiques" in the forum and the reactions to them. as for "private putdowns"-if there was a shred of positivity in your post I would have moved on and not commented but you have nothing positive to say and certainly appear to be "putting down" a few things yourself.

Wow, who do I think I am! Serves me right for getting drawn into such a dopey disagreement with the so-generous-with-his-time Webb with a whopping 434 posts! I think I have around 3000+ posts on the Songs Forum and they are mostly me trying to help/encourage others. Not that you hardly ever bothered, of course...but my opinion is there are THOSE who are jerkoffs that cause the trouble. A tiny minority making it a less than happy place. As for my comments appearing to be negative: seems that is the prevailing thought, since it is the bloody title of the thread.

jamesg1213 .... I don't really mind if no-one offers me mix advice, but once I've finished a piece of music, I want people to hear and hopefully enjoy it, otherwise, there wasn't much point in doing it.

Agreed
Naturally most want folks to hear what they recorded and hope it's enjoyed. There are plenty of places for that where there are many more members to hear it. ( who uses what software to record doesn't mean anything to me when it comes to the final product) The problem (for me) I seem to run into was that it was basically musicians trying to get other musicians to listen...didn't seem to me that the (non musician) public was there -so it was no different than the songs forum...everyone carrying on about this or that and just making the time/value balance crazy. The site I liked eventually just turned into an on-line storage place for me. I have a free account so kept it mainly for the vocalist that I recorded the tunes for...he didn't want me to close it. James mentioned many points of reason that I thought were balls on. Many of the points aren't limited to the song forum here. I've seen those same issues elsewhere. And I don't agree with "otherwise-there wasn't much point of doing it" at all. I've personally recorded more music and had a blast doing it than I've ever posted, or ever will. How good it may or may not be has nothing to do with that. I record to have fun. It's for me first. I'll be recording music with or without internet service...that much is certain....as long as I physically can that is. Now I do wish there was a place that I could send some cuts, get the technical recording aspects reviewed and advice about issues and how to proceed...but the songs forum isn't that. Wish it were.

I'll be recording music with or without internet service...that much is certain....as long as I physically can that is. Exactly, I have been writing and recording since I was 14 years old and could set two tape deck side by side and hit record. It has always been for the fun of it, something that I personally enjoy. I see the songs forum as a place that I can share what I have worked on. I am completely fine with some folks saying, "Good song, I really enjoyed this". To me, that is still feed back. I listen to lots of music on the song forums, but I tend ot only reply to songs that I like, or can relate too. Someone else mentioned this earlier and I think that there are a lot of people like that. I like to know who has listened and who liked the song, it helps me for song writing to know that I am on the right track or not on the right track in likeability of a song. I also like it when people offer honest mix advice. I will take all of that kind of feedback I can get. I have learned a lot over the last 7-8 years about recording and mixing from the Techniques and Song Forums, invaluble free advice from guys that has graciously volunteered advice. I listen to it all.....and filter it all. You learn who's advice to trust, that just takes time. Occasionally, I will PM specific people that I trust, as a reality check. I have those sources here for mixing and on other forums for the arranging and writing side of things.

I know. Thanks....but I think you realize that "place" had the intended meaning of "forum". There are many forums were the "pro's" give in depth help. It isn't one. I have two other interests (hobbies) that involve internet and the forums I frequent have "big dogs" that can and do address anything that is thrown at them. Here....well there's a guy you pay... Just an observation offered about an issue that was brought up. When it gets down to it.....I like ice cream and it comes in many flavors...some just don't do it for me. I think after getting a good taste of the forum it just doesn't do it for some and if all the reasons were listed and gone over by a panel of Einsteins it wouldn't change a thing. It is what it is.

I provide that service for free. I always give an honest critique and advice. Of course, my view isn't 1980s centric like some people's are. Of course I don't have a 900 lb rack of Rocktronic gear either.

Expand? It is what it is people come and people go. As some wise person herein noted most of us are probably not "qualified", whatever that may be in this context. I do not consider myself qualified, though I know what my ears like. I will admit to being cautious with my replies because thats the way I am. If I listen to something and it does nothing for me I normally leave it without comment. If I liked a song but do not think I can add anything constructive I will comment that I liked it. If I can say something and be constructive then I will say my two pence. But I will not be deconstructive, nasty etc because I can hide behind internet anonymity. Thats Wookiees perspective, after all what a piece of music sounds like is subjective so many factors can effect how it sounds. I use my ears if they tell me they like it or they can hear something a bit off they always tell me.
