Thanks for the post BandLab. It's great that you jumped straight in with a message of reassurance, and it's great that you are being transparent. It's also amazing that many from the original team will be joining you. I foresee great things form my favourite DAW - Here's to a great future together. Cheers!

Hey all,
This is terrific news.  I just want to let everyone know that Cakewalk is in great hands!  I'm thrilled for Noel and Ben, and I've heard Meng is awesome.  I'm also just selfishly happy that I get to keep using SONAR for my music projects :-).  Best of luck to all involved!  I hope to stay not too terribly far away.

I'm glad this has happened. Many of us felt it had to happen, given that SONAR is such a great DAW. But there was also a wistful, hopeful element to that belief: What if SONAR really was dead, after all?

I personally welcome the new owners, with this note: We love you for keeping our DAW alive, but we can be an ornery bunch when we don't get what we want. Next time you have a free week, read the threads relating to "Fix Notation!" and "It's NOT a Subscription!"

So happy to hear about this!  I was gutted after reading Cakewalk would be killed off. Seemed to be a crime against nature almost, to kill what I consider to be such a great software. I wasn't planning on using another DAW, and took the steps needed to keep using Cakewalk. BUT to lose the living , evolving part of the software would have been a deadly blow sooner or later and having someone new in the drivers seat is awesome, espacially for this community.

I wish you as the new owner great success!  Christmas came early this year :)

Meng, please tell me that Sonar will continue to have a Staff View. And an Event List. And a Console View. And so on. The great strength of Sonar is that it has all these different ways of doing things. No other DAW has this.

Apart from the ones which do...

Anyway, it’s great someone has decided Sonar is worth investing in and continuing development. I’ve thought for many years that it’s the best Windows DAW there is. Though those who, unlike me, use the staff view might be made even happier if it gets the reworking and de-bugging it’s needed for a very long time. Same with ACT and the Matrix view.

And for those of us no longer using Windows, any chance of re-activating the Sonar for Mac project? >:-)

Well, Cubase's Event List is terrible. And you can't select more notes in their staff view than you can see on the screen. So, although superior to Sonar's in many ways, this renders their staff view unusable for my workflow.

But, I don't want to be argumentative at such a joyful time. At this point, I'll settle for a simple "staff view isn't going anywhere."

Very glad to hear of this.
Looking forward to the new adventures from the development team.
I was always very impressed with their work.

I have 4 other DAWS in my arsenal, but most of all of my work, was in Sonar.
Glad they are going to keep it going. It`s part of me, a part of me I did not want to give up.
Thank you for keeping Sonar alive.

Noel Borthwick [Cakewalk
Besides Meng, BandLab has some amazingly talented and competent engineers and staff. I'm honored to be part of his team and working on the next generation of music software, not just continuing the development of what Cakewalk was best known for, but taking it to the next level. With BandLab's deeply integrated social platform and vision there could be some truly exciting possibilities that I look forward to exploring in the near future.

I think you can all be confident that not only will SONAR live on but that it will evolve in ways we didn't imagine. Thank you Meng and BandLab for making Cakewalk walk again!

Welcome, Meng, and congratulations, Noel. This is so great to see. I could not have hoped for a better next step for Cakewalk/SONAR. So happy to see you will continue to lead the dev team, and that the IP is in the hands of 'one of us', a musician. Welcome again, Meng, and thanks taking this on.

Long live SONAR, its developers and its users!

Regards,
Dave

Wow, great! I appreciate the open communication and the integration of former team members, this maybe a good sign for the future. Having tasted some other DAWs I was somehow disappointed about the competitors. Although it is possible to work with them, I always preferred Sonar. It fits my thinking and my work flow best.

Speaking as someone who since the closure of Cakewalk has checked out the obvious rivals (as a back up plan in case I lost the ability to use Platinum at some point in the future) and saw no compelling reasons to make me want to change to any of them, I'm very much looking forward to hearing what the future holds for Sonar.*

* as long as it doesn't require monthly subscriptions, being online only or I-lok!

Well, I like what you mention with * above. And I would also add "cloud storage only" as a dislike.

Hello, Meng! Thanks for making a move to adopt this classic piece of software. I've been using it since since 1996, and would love the opportunity, when the time comes, to talk with the development team about some ideas for new and unique features that can help secure more market share for the Sonar application. Once again, welcome aboard and thanks for your faith in us as a user base!

Re: Hello from BandLab 2018/02/23 23:02:55 (permalink)
This is fantastic news on so many levels!!!

I also wish to extend my thanks to BandLab for rescuing Sonar, my welcome to Meng for joining our community so quickly, and my congratulations to Noel and Ben for their opportunity to continue the development of my favorite DAW!

It's hard to imagine a better outcome for what seemed to be such a sad event last November. From then through January I went back and forth on whether to stick with Sonar or switch to another DAW. I demo'ed several others, and while they are all good in many ways, I just didn't like any of them well enough to purchase them, so in February I decided to stay with Sonar for the time being. I am glad I did.

Now if BandLab could just follow through on the collaboration with Sonicscore's Overture for the notation solution that was oh-so-close to happening last year, I would be even more thrilled than I already am.

I agree that a "cloud storage ONLY" & "web based ONLY" SONAR would NOT be a good choice. A lot of us have OFFLINE studio computers. My studio computer has only seen the internet ONE DAY!!! ( for windows activation & music production software activation's) WHEN IT'S RUNNING SMOOTH, NO NEED TO RISK MESSING IT UP!! Heck!! I don't even have internet access in my studio(it's in another room).
