I just bought Guitar Rig 5 Pro....
I've been doing sound checks with GR5 all day, messing around learning the program, just getting the feel for it, and I came to the conclusion that it makes my weak guitar tracks sound like a million bucks with the right settings. It gives me a multitude of options to choose from. 17 different speaker cabinets, many different amps, tons of very responsive effects, mic positions, mics, many many presets to get you started...it's just has a very wide variety of sounds and they sound very close to the amps and cabinets they are trying to emulate. It tends to lean more towards electric distorted guiatrs, but it definitely has something for the clean guitars and basses too. I tried running a Martin D-18 thru it...and found a few presets that really made the acoustic guitar shine. Same with my Ibanez bass. Even my Les Paul copy sounded great. So I tried adding GR5 effects to a mix of guitar, bass, and a drum loop from Session Drummer 3, the bottom line is it makes my mix shine like a million bucks. Because there's sooo many options, it took a while for me to find the sounds I liked best, but wow, that was time well spent. I ended up with great very usable sounds. I could have gone out and bought a Fender Twin, a Marshall, and a bunch of foot pedal effects, but this was much cheaper, and I can use it inside of Sonar X1 very easily. I thought for a while that maybe I could get away with just using GR4, but there's just soooo much more in GR5 that it's worth the upgrade cost. I don't want to be without it, so I decided to go ahead and just buy it. Yep, my test recordings and sound checks came out great.

Yeah, man. It's epic and yet another reason why I bought X1. I wanted to upgrade this month but sadly it'll have to wait. GR4 LE will do what I need for now. Have fun.

@vintage vibe... The only real experience I have with Guitar Rig is from GR2 (maybe earlier) and I would NOT have trusted it as my effects processor for a guitar track. However, I did find myself reaching for it to add a little extra this that or the other... even on non guitar tracks. Especially when it came to adding just a little extra gain or presence. But for straight effects I found it to be too squashy and squonky for my tastes and relied on more traditional approaches and blended GR in when I felt the need. I had been freaking out a little as to what exactly I was going to do for proper guitar signals but as soon as I started messing around with GR4 LE it became quite apparent dialing in what I wanted would be easy peasy. Most of the tones I like are pretty standard but slightly tweaked to my personal tastes. I like to roll off the really low freqs but give a boost to the hi-lows, give a bit of a scoop out on the low mid but draw up the high mids for punch, take down the super high frequencies and then bring up the presence. This is something I've done for years on any amp I get my hands on and actually I prefer playing my guit through nice bass amps that have a proper EQ to accomplish this and then toss on a stomp box. Well messing around with just the sample presets on GR4LE it took me seconds to get those sounds on the various presets because the GUI is so good and emulative of the real amps dials... and it sounded pretty damned close to to the real deal. The mic position, amp/cabinet combos, EQs, sim rack effects options? ... well, let's just say I am extremely eager to get my hands on GR5 Pro. I'm gonna make some very sick things happen with that plug. Very sick indeed. Cheers.

Guitar Rig 5 has some very cool sounds for sure. Nice improvements from Guitar Rig 4. I've been using Pod Farm 2.5 as well. I have in my Sonar X1D effects bin for a guitar track both Guitar Rig 5 and Pod Farm 2.5. Then I alternate between the two as I'm evaluating which one has the right sound for that particular track. I've been getting some awesome authentic sounds out of Pod Farm, and I like the extra sparkle stuff I can add with Guitar Rig 5.
Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

GR5 also has some very nice ambient sounds that you don't normaly find in a amp sim program. I like the ease of it's GUI, and I can recognize some of the amps...so it makes it easy for me to dial in a good sound that I would like. I found the knobs on the amps to be very responsive, and work very well as far as coloring the sound. Programs that I tried many years ago were garbage compared to this. This has many nice sounding usable sounds in it. I think it makes a great addition to Sonar X1.

I'm using GR5 effects combined with ProChannel modules. Reflektor is a great reverb and the compressors and limiters are very nice for mixing. Still a little too much latency for my taste when recording, so I tend to start with an amp model and build the sound later. I have to say that Amplitude is my go to for the Fender reverb sounds from the 60's but overall I've invested in Guitar Rig. It came with Producer and I upgraded to the full version 4 and got version 5 when I bought Komplete. Some of the stuff in Komplete is only available through the Guitar Rig interface. I kept searching for them and found them in GR5. GR5 is a solid investment and a great addition to Sonar on several fronts. The ONLY downside is the NI support. They own all our becan, just ask them.

Even though I mostly use Scuffham S-Gear for cleanish electric guitar, I couldn't do without GR5! Tip 1: Try the "Vintage Verb" module! It's frikking awesome! The springs are by far the best I've tried and the plates have recently started to take the place of the UAD EMT140 for vocals in my projects (mostly because GR adds no latency, but the quality is actually quite comparable). Tip 2: Try the "Van 51" (Peavey) amp model. IMO the most underrated model inside GR. Warm and defined all the way from clean to a bit of crunch to more crunch to all out metal gain.

My favorite preset settings include the Dandy Twang, Clean break, Van Slight Crunch and the bass amp as well. Citrus cabinet, containment effect, are also something I'll be working with a lot. There's sooo much stuff on the plate to work with, my options will be wide open. This program is a sound mixer's dream. The Twang Reverb is a takeoff of the old Twin Reverb and sounds great. I love how the tone controls work..... I've owned Native Instruments stuff for years and only once did I need customer support. I got my answer off their forums. Once you learn how their Service Center works, it's gravy and very nice software.

Guitar rig 5 pro is Awesome and I use it ALL the time. "Foo Monkeys" patch is killer, split into 1 amp left and 1 amp on right. :) make sure it's interleave is set to stereo to hear. Used it on a blues vocal yesterday. (they've had me since the grt3 demo). Easy to browse and find exactly what you're looking for Or for what you didn't know you were looking for. I also use Komplete 8 (great jewels in there), traktor pro (best re-mix software hands down), Razor (Whoa, listen to it, Kontakt version of Broadway Big Band (owned the halion and crossgraded). Mashine is killer too and reminds me of when I got my Roland S-50 in 7th grade...FUN(sampling, beat laying, looping) Mashine has great sound palette. Native instruments= Great software/hardware. (low latency USB drivers)

I am holding out for the discount on Komplete 8 (should be in a few months). But I really want GR5 NOW! New amps and the *whole* package, that is where it SLAMS Amplitube. If I want to go through all the sounds and get inspired, it is all there. With Amplitube, you have to buy components.... I personally think that is the lamest business model (even though the product is good).

The way I figured it, the upgrade cost for X1 Producer owners is $99.00 bucks. One decent stomp box can easily cost more than that. With GR5, you're gtting a slew of effects, amp simulations, mics, cabinet simulations all in a nice package that'll work perfectly in X1. I can run drums, vocals, synths thru this as well. Like I said this is a mixer's dream, because it gives you so many options on where you can go with your sound. It didn't take long at all for me to make my D-18 sound like a million bucks !! Once I did the A/B test, I was hooked. I don't know how I got by without it !!

I'm kind of burnt out today after all the sound checks I did yesterday, but I went back to hear the D-18 with fresh ears...wow what a difference GR5 adds !! My guitar is now sounding very rich and full and with the program off it sounds bland. The tone difference is unbelieveable. The difference is night and day. This was definitely a great addition to my arsenal of audio tools.

I was holding off on the GR-5 update, but after reading this I may have to reconsider. I didn't realize it came with so many new amps and effects. I mainly go for a clean guitar sound and lately I've just been using the old Cakewalk Amp Sim. It's still got a heck of a sound to it, especially if you are running your guitar through a tube pre and tube compressor. Another thing I like about GR is using the recorder in it to capture some of those weird sound effects. I save them as .wav files and import them in to Sonar for other uses. I've done that on several projects. Plus I've run vocals through it a lot as well. There's a lot you can do with GR.

Ya there is a lot you can do with GR5. I've only scratched the surface and I'm blown away on how great it sounds. I barely know how to get around it, once I learn the ropes, it'll be incredible. The presets are great, they can get you started in the right direction and you can tweak from there to get the sound you want. Then you can save that setting too !! It really is a heck of a tool.

Another deciding factor was the upgrade price for X1 Producer owners...getting it for $99 sure beats the street price of $199. Plus they are sending me a disc copy of the program !! Thanks Cakewalk !!

Can't get a good clean sound out of it (in a fender kind of way) and always use Pad farm for cleans. I'll give it another go.. GR5 is awsome for many tones too and a big step up from gt4

I'm a bit surprised by all the positive comments about GR5. From the little I've tinkered with GR4LE I have to say I've been disappointed. The presets all sound harsh to me, and although I was eventually able to build something I could live with, the tone just doesn't seem up to snuff. I was expecting more. Is GR5 really that much better? If I'm disappointed with GR4, is it worth the upgrade?

@HeatherHaze
It depends what else you may be using / happy with. if you are happy with your current sounds, maybe you don't need GT5.
All I can say from my own experience, is that I really didn't like GT4. I thought it was just special effect box, only good if you were looking for "out there" sounds, but not if you wanted "good" tone.
I upgraded to GT5 after reading a review, and in my opinion, it is night and day with GT4. the new amps do sound great with whatever guitar I use, and it has become my default guitar plugin.
Having said that, I still prefer Pod farm for the "pure clean" sounds.
isn't there a demo you can try to see if it is worth the upgrade for you?

Is GR5 really that much better? If I'm disappointed with GR4, is it worth the upgrade? GR5 gives a vast amount more options on which to chose from. Yes you do have to wade thru a lot of sounds you may not like but aftwer a while, you'll learn to find what what you're looking for fairly easy. I'm no expert with the program, but already have found quite a few sounds that I will use. They do have a demo available that you can try out...it times out after 30 minutes but you can re-start it. I would suggest setting aside a few hours to get to know the program before making a decision. It may take a while because there is so much there. Once you've found a sound you like, try doing the A/B with and without test. You'll see how much of a difference GR5 really makes. If you're looking for clean sounds, I would recommend the Twang Reverb or the Tweed Amplifier...remember the presets are there just to get you started and you can tweak them to your liking. What really amazes me is how responsive the knobs are...some programs you turn a knob and nothing much happens, this program you turn a knob and the settings change very similar to what happens on the actual amp.

Here's what I did...In Sonar I recorded a simple 12 bar boogie beat and looped it to use for auditioning sounds in Guitar Rig 5. I'd play the loop and click on each amplifier and then double click on the various presets for that amp...doing this gives me a good feel for each seperate amp. I also was able to find many clean settings as well as distorted ones. I'm starting to find out which of the amps are my favorites, but it's hard because most of them sound very good !! You can also give that preset up to a 5 star rating so you can easily find your favorites later. I'm still learning the program so bear with me. There's lots to learn. Just for kicks I went back to Sonar's amp simulation effect settings, and too late, I'm spoiled by GR5. There's no comparison. Getting GR5 is like getting a huge warehouse full of amps, speaker cabinets, mics, and effects to add to your sound. For those of you who want to try out Guitar Rig 4, I found that I had to download the 4.2 upgrade from the Native Instruments site to get it to work for me. The GR4 that comes on the X1 disk doesn't work very well at all. Another Note...I had a little routing problem with my guitar's input to GR5, I had to adjust the Right/Left input in the preferences menu to get it to work. Once I did that, I was good to go.

Thanks djwayne, good info. I'll have to spend some time with it. My first impression was the sound was too harsh and hard to get any warmth out of it (speaking of GR4). But I'll check the GR5 demo and give it a chance. Your enthusiasm has me convinced it must be user error on my part. :)

@HeatherHaze... In the Anderton Next Level video he shows a really cool way to get guitar effect/amp sims sounding much nicer and less hairy with one of the X1 compressors (I forget the name of it but it's the one that looks like an old timey rack compressor). I'm looking forward to using that trick.

Well I would also recommend that after you download the demo, open the stand alone version and goto the help section and read the PDF files about setting it up and getting started. It's very well written and super informative and will help you master the program in a short while. Now that I have read the instructions and know how to use it properly, I'm just amazed at this program, it's AWESOME !!!!! There's also a components pdf file which goes over the amp, cabinets, effects, mics and gives you some basic information about them all. This is a fabulous program. I have no regrets about buying this !!!!!
