Hi everyone,

We're sorry to interrupt the thread, but we're confused over here. This FW patch for SP2, Is it necessary for anyone who upgrades to SP2?

How can we tell if we already have this hotfix installed with our SP2 installation?

On newer systems, must the regestry be modified to increase the FW speeds to 400?

There is also some hotfix/patch for dual core/multithreaded CPUs and Windows. Must everyone use this as well for the newer systems?

My brothers and I would appreciate it if someone could provide any links to these subjects.

Thanks.

Hi,

I think this is the situation:

- MS Hotfix 885222 was intended to apply to users with SP2 and 1394b (FW800) ports. SP2 downgrades firewire speed on 1394b ports to 100. So in theory it should only affect FW800 ports - HOWEVER users here have reported that applying the hotfix also helps if you are having FW400 port issues. I would try it if you thought you were having problems.

- Regarding Hotfix 885222, if you do need it, you would only have to update the registry if another firewire controller was added after the hotfix was applied.

- You should be able to tell if hotfix 885222 is installed by checking the date and version of ohci1394.sys in your WINDOWS/system32/drivers directory - it should have a last modified date of 4th November 2004. If it is, you can then tell if a specific controller has the correct speed by following the instructions for updating the registry on the MS KB885222 article, just look to see what the sidspeed value is.

- MS Hotfix 904412 fixes general problems with serial bus devices hanging, including firewire.

- There is also MS Hotfix 896256. This relates to power management on dual core processors running SP2. Gamers have noticed erratic performance on this setup - don't know if there's anything specific about audio. This fix updates the performance management feature to correctly calculate the amount of spare capacity when running 2 cores, to prevent it throttling back the CPU uneccessarily.

For more info on any of the above, type e.g. KB885222 into google and the first hit should take you to the MS support site.

Hope that summarises things for you? If it was me, I would only apply the hotfixes if you definitely have problems.

cheers
A

Yep, have tested it out and for me anyway this is the best yet - distortion gone, projects load, all good so far. Apart from an annoying tendency for Sonar to crash if I load a project with LM in after I have just been working on another one (but that's what beta testing is all about I guess ;) ). Works fine if I always close and restart Sonar before working on a different project.

Still need to really push it, but the main issues I had seem to be resolved. Phew.

cheers
Adrian

I have a similar situation here on my setup upon a load of a new project, SOnar will lock up and task manager reports Sonar " not responding" I am assuming when you say "crash" thats what sonar does to you ???

Hi

Nope - that's the problem I used to have, where Sonar would hang on load. Checking the task manager showed two instances of Sonar both not responding. But beta release 2.0b47 (in fact I think it might have been b45) has resolved that for me - loading a project now seems be fine, if ponderous. I am going to do some more testing today. The issue I now have is I get a message "Unhandled Exception" followed by a Sonar crash if I close a project and open another one without closing and re-opening Sonar first.

So do you still get the Sonar hanging problem in b45 and later?

cheers
A

dont have the crashing issue..
well as of last night with beta 47 it did NOT hang!!! and seems to reload ok, yes i had the problem with beta 45. like yours though seems to take forever to load a project. Interesting you reported two instances of sonar in task manager when it hung, I had the exact same symptom and reported it in another thread... now th crazy thing was when i clicked on the second instance of sonar that showed up in task manager it killed the windows explorer process(the desktop went away).. never figured that one out
keep the faith I am sure the bugs will be ironed out soon. I just have to give Kudos to Focusrite for working on the issue .. given the "small" user base of Sonar people using LM they could have blown us off...I believe Gordons contact with them was a big help

Hi

Just finished Testing LM 2.0b47

Loadtime has improved, slighlyt faster, I have not pushed it yet, but i was comformatlby oading 18 instance projects anyway, this version still comfortably loads the 16. Hardware follows seems to work, and it does seem to sound cleaner. As I said i have 18 instances across a mix, and it deinately seemed cleaner andsharper sounding. Whether this is hte stereo issue being fixed in 45 or whatever it was. i am not expereincing the Distrotion issue either anymore, so result all round.

Bugs

1) I get the same thing as Dunch, after closing one LM project and then loading another LM project I get the Unhandled exception message, as I said to Dunch my theory for this is that its now holding onto memory. However thankfully closing SOnar between project loads works as a workaround without and nastiness. So at least this bug has a workaround.

2) Thefirst time you open the LM Application Manager in 47 it works fine, you can choose hardware follows and latency etc. However the second time I open it I get an Application Error and the GUI does not load. THis continues until you reboot the computer at which point it will work again, but only the first time after reboot.

This means if you wised to change latencies in a session frequently you would be screwed as you would have to reboot the PC quite often.

Probaly not a majorone but thought I would mention it.

All in all the best release so far, really seems very good, if they sort out the issues above great.

They are really pulling out all the stops and I think that hte final release is going to be spot on.

I just htink that Sonar is the best Daw since sliced bread i love it, and I think that the Liquid mix isawesome, ifwe can get to play well together then my work here is done lol.

Next beta release is now available for download.

I have briefly tested it with 6.2.1 and:
- I can repeatedly and reliably load my 'difficult' project
- Sonar does not crash on subsequent loads
- I have no discernable distortion
- No pops/crackles on playback

That's my list of issues fixed..

I'll test further over the weekend, but it's looking good guys :)

Well done to FR for sticking at it and owning the problem - I think that makes the difference between an average supplier and a great one. All digital kit will be prone to bugs & issues, but you need to know that when you have problems the vendor is willing to work with you on it. Focusrite have done that here, even though some of the issues are in that nasty grey area of the VST spec.

cheers

Hey guys

Just tested Beta 49

-Opened my test project with 18 instances (however this was not a problem for me, this has been loading since 1.5.5)
- PLayed back without Distortion
- Reopened project directly afterwards without the handling error from that last Beta.
- Opened another project i had done with LM 1.5.5 had some problems at first, would not open at first, and also caused dropouts. I then removed all LM instances, then undid the remove, somethign i used to do to remove the distortion problem and saved under a new name. Then I reopened, this time it opened fine and played back no problems. So try this before you dispair.
- LM manager issue has now gone can open this as many times as I won't without getting application error.

So all in all this seems to have fixed everything for me.

The only thing I now have to do as I feel more confidant i will try to up the instance no to 32, to fully load test this now, and see if it will both open reliably and playback. This may take me a week or so, but will post back here.

Things are looking very positive, I look forward to being able to change the title of this post to. Liquid Mix Works and Rocks lol

Good luck and take care guys.

Thanks DK

Right guys, still not had time to try the holy grail of 32 instances, sadly real work like finishing my bands album is becoming more pressing, so the luxury of experimentation is not mine. However the good news is the editing phase will be finished end of this week and I will start mixing, I may just have to 'find' a use for 32 instances in one of my mix's, actually i think I already know one mother of a tune that might actually need close that.

In the meantime, i was surfing the LM site and i found this http://www.focusrite.com/product/liquid_mix/assets/

THis is quite useful some extra emulations and more interestingly (I think) extra snapshots, and an option to upload your own snapshots along with what you use them for etc.

I think once we have begun to use the LM in anger (now we have a good driver ) we should put up any useful snapshots that we come up with.

I will put up anything I come up with, i confess so far i have mainly been using the presets as starting points.

I am thinking though that the hybrid EQ's would open up some interesting options, snapshots with hybridized EQ anyone.

In fact a challenge come up with the sickest snapshot, winner gets a sherbet dip.

Haha, I was putting together a 32 instance test and got sidetracked with the sounds I was making and ended up trying to compose something.

I should just put together a bunch of sine waves I guess...

Thanks for the heads up on the assets,

The LEAST Focusrite could do for us after all the problems we had , would be to pack All those emulations/snapshots into ONE zip package so we did not have to download one at a time .....

seems like there is yet ANOTHER driver update (a beta ) 2.1b2 dated august 07
found it here http://mail.focusrite.com/beta/liquid_mix/

2.1b2 - 6 August 2007

• Fixed buffer size error which was occurring in SoundForge, Wavelab, and other DAWs
• Sidechain EQ curve and font now appear green to differentiate from normal EQ bands
• Fixed hardware follows plugin functionality in Sony Vegas, ACID, SoundForge.
• implemented more friendly error messages for hardware disconnect and missing emulations

I've downloaded the beta and installed it. My experience isnt a good one.

Mono instances work now....But whenever i try to clone a channel with liquidmix on it OR try to clone a instance of liquid mix to another channel, sonar has an error of some sort and shuts down. I can reopen sonar once....try again...error....then have to reboot.

One day my UAD, LM and Sonar will work in harmony....and make music as one (i hope)

This goes out to Dunch and Musicman100

Either of you tried the Liquid Mix out with Sonar 7 yet?

I have 7 at home and on my laptop, and its got some great features. However i am about 3 weeks away from finishing a project and don't want to load up 7 up on the main machine and find that all my mixs with the LM go South.

Just wandered if my fellow intrepid explorers in Sonar/LiquidMix world had anything to contribute on this front.

If not, when I do take the plunge i will post on here and let everyone know how it went.

no problems so far plus I created some new projects in SP7 with LM and no bugs or crashes with the combination .

I'll put them up zipped and post the link when I get home.

You can do it on the Mac and they transfer to PC perfect.

I have a Mac and a PC so I just swap firewire cables from my DM-3200, UA Expander and Liquid Mix and I'm good to go.

Thanks dude, I new one of you guys would come through

This is why I love this forum, and there goes my Friday night, install city here we come.

Did you leave Sonar 6 on there and just install over the top as recommended, also which version of LM are you using 2.0 or one of the new Beta flavors?

Any other precautions you took apart from the normal ones.

Coolio, I wander if Focusrite will enable proper sidechain now that both Sonar and Logic have it, and Cubase is getting it I believe?

Gordon this is why I love this forum, regardless of the crazy posts out there, some-one has a config or problem that one encounters, as in out LM

I did NOT overlay S7 , S6 is still on the hard drive, I haven't decided if I want to remove it or not.

AFA drivers I am still using the beta 2.1b2, but it appears there is a NEW beta out ,dated 10-04, that adds 64 bit support..

I know the feeling about there goes the weekend.. I think you will be happy with the combination, I used to hold my breath as ptojects loaded with the "buggy" LM drivers, now it is a joy. It still takes S7 a bit longer to load projects than previous Sonars, but a large smile appears as the LM hardware unit suddenly pops up with the emulations loaded !!!!
