No audio! Please help me start

I have just bought and install X1 Studio. The interface is Edirol UA-25. I've plugged bass guitar into UA-25 and the green volume controls are flashing but I hear NO AUDIO. The bass gets recorded, I can hear it later in a playback mode. The only time I can hear my bass is when "Input Echo" is switched to "On" but the sound is insanely distorted (though recored sound is not distorted at all) What am I doing wrong ? Interface setup?

Sample files play ok.

Make sure you have it set to ASIO mode in the Audio Preferences. Did you follow the instructions when installing the UA-25?

What's your computer's specs? What version of Windows?  Need more info.

Hi Afrodrum.

If you look at the bottom of daveny5's post, he lists his system specs in detail.  I do this too, if you look at the bottom of this post.  Go into your profile and click on the Signature tab and plug that stuff in.

Most of us do that so that anytime we post some weirdness, folks don't have to hound us for some idea of what kind of system we are running - the signature ALWAYS takes care of that for us.

Many times, just reading someone's initial post and referring to their specs can offer a bunch of ideas as to what kinds of things may have caused that poster's problems.

Sooooooooooo, when you get a chance please update your profile, and also post your specs here as quickly as you can, including in this case what the status if of your interface drivers and settings.

We will do our best to help you - to do that we need this kind of info.

Thanks,

Bob Bone

Thanks, same as my X1 the computer is three days old and its not completely finished yet. It has some monster 12 core processor, 24GB RAM, Windows 7.  I will attach specs to my ID as soon as its finished.

The moment I plugged UA-25 in the system recognised it as the soundcard and I could play with no problem mp3's, you tube and X1 samples.

I went to EDIT->PREFERENCES->AUDIO->PLAYBACK AND RECORDING and switched to ASIO.

Then I went to EDIT->PREFERENCES->AUDIO->DEVICES and my UA-25 is not listed in INPUT DRIVERS window neither in OUTPUT DRIVERS windows. Both windows are empty. I downloaded UA-25 driver from Roland site and the installation went knowhere in the middle - at one point NEXT button went grey.

Actually UA-25 seems to automatically launch its drivers everytime I connect it with the computer. I just tried to use the drivers downloaded from Roland site and the system says UA-25 is already installed. The INPUT/OUTPUT DRIVERS windows in PREFERENCES->AUDIO->DEVICES are still empty.

AHA - you have the dreaded "can't wait" syndrome, just like the rest of us :)

You DEFINITELY have some setup work to do, despite your resounding success at playing an MP3 file.

I believe we need to revisit your interface driver installation vanishing act in the middle.

I would suggest:

1.  Take a moment - order some pizza, get a hug
2.  Download the drivers again from Roland.  Maybe something there did not download cleanly
3.  Give me a hint as to what you mean when you say that your system is 'not completely finished yet'.
4. I have a hunch that when you switched to ASIO, that the reason it didn't show anything was that your ASIO drivers are not actually installed as of yet.
5.  Go get another hug OR a slice of pizza
6.  Let me know when you have the drivers downloaded again, and I will be on hand when you are ready to do their installation.  If you want, I will send you a private message with my cell, if you are in the states, and you can call me when you are ready to install your drivers.  Just say something in your post reply.

Folks in the forum help each other out with drivers and setup LOTS of times, and I am confident we can help you too.

So, I will look for a t least one post from you, that will hopefully contain some idea of what your system specs are, also telling me you have downloaded the interface drivers again from Roland, AND whether or not you want me to send you my cell, so that I can walk you through at least part of this over the phone.

Welcome to our  happy little family, by the way,

Bob Bone

Indeed I have edirol set default for playback and (!) UA-25 is not listed in record window so I cant set it default. In record window I have Realtek which probably refers to the mic/phone devices on the computer case front panel. I quit using downloaded drivers as soon as system confirmed the UA-25 is already installed

I am not that impatient, I just spent half day trying to be smart and solve problem myself. I live in Warsaw Poland, it is almost Monday here so everybody I could hug or order pizza from went to bed. Until tomorrow you are my only family.  I'm off to Roland to download driver again as instructed. Please dont go away, Bob

Re:No audio! Please help me start 2012/10/14 17:54:01 (permalink)
I would like you to:

1.  Hit the Windows Start button
2.  Type in: Device Manager, then hit enter.  This will start the Windows Device Manager
3.  Expand the tab for Sound, Video and Game Controllers.
4.  You SHOULD see an entry for your UA-25 device - might be called Roland/Edirol UA-25 - something like that.  Double-click on that entry, and it will open up the Properties dialog box for that device
5.  Look to see if it tells you the device is working properly.  If it is not (or you saw like a yellow triangle next to it in the list of devices - then you have a bad install of drivers.  If the device IS working properly, then I would like you to click on the Drivers tab for the device, and tell me what the Driver Provider, the Driver Date, and the Driver Version.

Also, I asked you to list for me two other things.  First, I would like a detailed list of specs for your computer system, so that I know (and the others in the forum that may help with this for you) what kind of system you are working with.  It will help guide us in how we approach helping you.  Without that info, many forum folk would not even respond to you, other than to tell you once to provide that info.  The second thing I asked you to post was to let me know if you wanted to be able to call me on my cell to help walk you through this set of issues.

So, gather your thoughts and choose a path.  I and we stand ready to help you, but can only do that if you respond to the rather basic requests that have been made of you for more info.

Bob Bone

I am not going anywhere - I told you I would help you and meant it.

That's COOL you are in Poland.  I have been to many other places in Europe, but was never able to make it there.

So, THAT answers the question about you calling me.  I know you are 5 if not 6 hours later than me in your time zone, so I will stay with you on this as long as possible, so that you can go to sleep at least knowing that this stuff is working.

Look at my last post and once you finish downloading the drivers, please tell me that, and also give me your system specs, and tell my about the driver information.  I gave you steps to locate that on your system.

Also, do have a name  other than AfroDrum?  I am Bob

Thanks,

Bob Bone

Any luck getting the driver info?  Sometimes Windows installs drivers automatically, but they are not the right ones.  This is why I am asking for those.

I am not trying to rush you - I am just trying to be sensitive to your time zone,

My name is Pawel. My system is based on some latest Intel 12core CPU, Windows7/64 ,  and 24GB RAM. I will check specs with my tech tomorrow, he is going to replace fans, video card and some other stuff that is why we call it not finished.

I am not going to sleep until its done :-)

I have downloaded driver again, the installation process starts with the request to uninstal UA-25 driver and unplug. Then the installation starts, then it ask to plug UA-25 again, then installation window goes grey and I got a message on the bottom control panel that automatic installation is succesful as if it was initiated by plugging the USB cable rather than launching "setup" driver installation file from Roland site.

Thanks, Pawel. - sorry you have to do this with no pizza AND no hugs!

I got your list - fan installation is a set of changes to your system that is completely transparent to the rest of it being 'done' - thank you for the explanation, AND for providing your specs.

I will look for your results post with the driver info,

Bob Bone

I DO think I see what is happening with your installation.

We can fix this - I want to look at the driver doc for the version you are downloading, so I will wait for your post,

I have just tried Update Driver in DEVICE MANAGER and pointed to folder with downloads from Roland. Windows refuses to update and says the current driver is optimal.

Re:No audio! Please help me start 2012/10/14 18:53:54 (permalink)
This is EXACTLY what I thought had happened.

Now, down below I have a bunch of steps listed.  I would like you to read the WHOLE list before you start to do anything, so that you are not surprised and slow at cancelling any Windows attempt to install the wrong drivers.

OK? So, read on.  When you are ready, start going through the list of steps.  If you have any questions, go ahead and post back with them before you start going through any of the steps.

Microsoft HIJACKED the driver installation - it tries to install drivers for things when they get plugged in, and sometimes even though you want to do a custom driver install it gets hold of the process first, and in the process of it trying to help it actually shoots you in the head, so to speak.

1.  Navigate to where you downloaded the drivers for your interface (get to the folder where you put it)  If you downloaded it to the desktop then you are ok.  If it went to a folder instead - I just want you to click once on the driver install file to select it, then right-click on it and hover your mouse on the 'Send to' option.  A drop-down will open to the side and I want you to sell it to send to the desktop - this will create a shortcut for it.  I will explain why later on.

2.  Unplug ALL open windows, so that we have a clear desktop

3.  Unplug your interface.  This will take the drivers out of memory

4.  Now, double click on your driver install shortcut that you created earlier.  We are doing it this way so that we leave as much of your desktop visible as possible, and having an explorer window open just hides part of your desktop

5.  Begin the installation process for your driver.  Try to drag the window for the driver install off to the upper left of your display.  This will leave a larger portion of your desktop visible.

I believe you said that at one point in the installation process, it tells you to plug IN the interface.  AS SOON AS YOU DO GET READY WITH YOUR MOUSE.  You will need to click FAST in the next step.

6.  AS SOON as you see Windows telling you that it is installing drivers for the new device, I WANT YOU TO CLICK ON CANCEL until that cancels.  You should then see some message that tells you that the drivers did not install.  That's ok, because your other install should still be running - it's just a little slower than windows at getting the drivers installed.

If the above all work as I am hoping, your program should continue to install the CORRECT drivers, and at the end of it all it should finish satisfactorily.

When all is said and done with the above, I would like you to go back and look in device manager for the driver info, just like you did before, and post back to tell me what that is.

Don't worry - If any of the above FAILS, I will STILL get you up and going.  I know EXACTLY what the problem is, and we will get you past this.

Bob Bone

Told you to be fast - are you trying again?

If you can't catch it in time there is another way to tell Windows to knock it off with that.

I am trying again. It asks me to uninstall and also restarts Windows. So it takes time

Ok, I know why I failed both times. There is no CANCEL to click on. Almost as soon as I plug USB I got the message on bottom control panel that the driver is installed succesfully

Yuck - it asks you to uninstall?

OK - this time around, when you get Windows started, just let it sit, and I will walk you through the other way of doing this.

I am assuming the restart of Windows is to get rid of the old drivers that were installed for the interface?
