Two of my favourite songs that I just cant stop listening to currently:

Well, one out of two's not bad!

I only remembered the second one after watching some 20th anniversary of his death videos and now I cant stop. I love the chorus.

I get annoyed with rap songs that steal, I mean sample, melody lines from other songs then rap over them (like Can't Touch This who totally rips off Rick James).  I can't listen to the second video because I keep hearing Diana Ross' I'm Coming Out in the background.

I KNOW I put a post about Eloy somewhere, thought it was this thread but I guess not.  I've been listening to their albums for several days - so many influences in there!

I'll never forget the first band I was in and the other guitarist thought he had come up with an original riff that was simply the barre chords  A, G and F (if I remember correctly, just three all one step apart).  First he played them going down, then he reversed them and played them going up.

I could swear it was a Procol Harum song (in fact I thought it was Conquistador), but now I can't find it...   Bah.

FOUND IT!!!  The A, G, F song that has been bugging me for an hour now.  It's ELO's Fire On High from 1975.  Four years before our guitarist thought he came up with the same riff.  *Whew!*  NOW I can go on with the rest of my day.

(We'll be on it ... after the end of tax season here! Too busy with mom's office and doing tax returns!)

As for Eloy ...

Weird ... I don't listen to music because it might sound like something else, or because it is supposed to be another this or that ... in way back when days, I even used to buy a few albums by the cover, never mind the rest!

If I can "match up" Eloy with someone, it would be "Jane", a sort of sister band to them in Germany. I think that we always think it is an influence simply because an instrument sounds like the same one we heard before ... and that's not fair ... the instrument is there and we do not go around saying that you sound like Bach or Beethoven, and can't play a lick worth its salt and sugar! Sometimes, the word "influences" just means we're not listening.

Picasso didn't have any influences! Neither did ____________________ ... we could go on forever, and all we will find is a dead end in the discussions.

I was listening to them from their very first album, and mostly because at the time (72/73) I picked up just about EVERTHING that was on the "Harvest" label, and almost ALL OF IT, was found in the used bins in every record store, and some of the things in there were magnificent, except that everyone else was stuck on flippingrwetjrghdsfghs LZ and something else or other, to ber able to listen to something different. It got so bad, that folks were even saying that The Third Ear Band sounded like The Who, and that Kevin Ayers was a wanna be Syd, and Roy Harper, was a cheap man's poet!

Even though I can not say it was for my sakes, they never quit on their work/music, though, and still, today, I write and talk about it. This stuff has lived, much more than you or I could ever believe, or imagine. It deserves to, for a lot of reasons, most of which have nothing to do with how we think and believe.

Creativity will always shine ... even quite a ways after we're blind and dead!

Ooooooopppppsssss ... one exception, of corpse ... BAPU! 'nuff sad'! But his darkness is very "poppy" ... as in seeds!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

The one you really want to go through is 10CC, and going as far back as Neil Sedaka ... and way past "Consequences" and all the weird stuff ... and be sure to include all the videos and stuff that 2 of them wrote for so many bands! They helped MTV make its mark ... talk about "creative"! Insanely so!

ELO's is a fine band, but it kinda falls apart for me, after Roy Wood left ... it became a nice music, radio friendly band. I still love playing "Mustard" by Roy, and the one album no one can understand or relate to, which is not only a satire, but also an insane creative endeavor ... "Eddie and the Falcons".

After RW, ELO had too many moments that were Beatle sounding for me, and in some ways, it took the flavor of the original style from me. I miss the crazyness of 10538 Overture and Roll Over Beethoven ... and then their 3rd album, their least known and appreciated that has so many nice things in it.

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Hi,

" I think that we always think it is an influence simply because an instrument sounds like the same one we heard before ... and that's not fair ... the instrument is there and we do not go around saying that you sound like Bach or Beethoven, and can't play a lick worth its salt and sugar!"

I was just listening to Rachel Flowers (went through all her pieces on Soundcloud twice ... very nice!!!), and the one piece that got me the most was the one that more than likely not many of us here will even bother to listen to ... Ligetti's piece.

I immediately zoned out on it, and realized how many times I have heard this kind of sound and how it was used, in many places, not only in a bittie by ELP. "2001, A Space, Odyssey", Tangerine Dream (Alpha Centauri and Atem), Klaus Schulze (early material), Vangelis (Beaubourg and some other early pieces) ... to realize how valuable and inspirational some pieces of music can be.

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

She plays Frank Zappa and Robert Fripp with equal ease ... it's downright scary and beautiful at the same time. On the Soundcloud page, I simply played all the pieces back to back, and wrote in the meantime ... it was an excellent hour plus, more like 2 I think ... and very enjoyable.

I think most folks would gladly be happy with one of those abilities, but for her, it seems like music is ... easy ... and any instrument is fine, or the same for her, and she can make it work. It's downright insane, and beautiful at the same time.

And blind ... it pretty much tells us all that we don't know poop about music ... and its listening! We only know chords and notes because someone told us!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!
