Producer -> Production Suite For free?

So, I purchased Producer. Then I purchased Expanded, then the Expanded bundle and saved a lot of money... or so I thought.

Cakewalk is now offering Producer -> Production Suite upgrade for free... except to get everything Production Suite has, I JUST PAID $149 not even a week ago.

I am going to be contacting Cakewalk on Monday, but I was wondering if anyone moderating from Cakewalk would maybe shed some light... will I be refunded or did I just eat the cost.

In all honesty, I am just more shocked and should have just waited like my gut told me to! Not that I didn't get my money's worth...but still. That's like being sold a TV for $1000 one day and the next day you see the same TV on CLEARANCE, and that hot feeling you get in your stomach after because you know you just got jacked for the commission.

Anyone else pull the same move? I've dumped $800 bucks in Cakewalk products since the launch of SONAR X1, I just feel... cheated kind of.

Others paid a lot more than that... These deals come and go. There will be more I'm sure.

This is a GREAT! NO BRAINER DEAL! for anyone qualified to do it. I don't cause I have Producer Expanded already, which suits my "needs" for now anyway.

I know it sucks when that happens, but ask yourself "Did I feel cheated at the time i bought the product?" If not just shrug it off to chance. Every time any company offers a great deal, there is going to be somebody who bought the product right before the latest deal. It happens and it all balances out in the end. Almost every Cakewalk customer has received some upgrade , add-on etc for a ridiculously low price at some point. I know in the last year alone Sonar has offered expanded modules for $10, upgrades for next to nothing and plenty of other deals anyone just upgrading to X1 did not get. Yes, it would have been nice if these things were included from the beginning, but i suspect that if i ad up all the upgrades and sale prices that i got everything for, it may still be less than what they are offering "production suite" for.

You chaps are right. I think I just needed confirmation that this isn't a new experience lol. I needed to vent.
I made the switch from Pro-tools to SONAR back when SONAR 8 was first released and I've never turned back. Obviously for a reason. I'll just shut my yap. lol.

I agree it's annoying but it's just life. Happens all the time on different things. Deals come and go, great when you get the deal not so great when you just miss it.

Yeah... I hate when that happens. I was however curious how much people who built up X1 through upgrades ended up paying. Yowza! I'm glad I just ponied up the extra dough for the Suite right off the bat. Heckuva deal... and it wasn't even on sale.

Yup. Between my Studio (place of work) and my home studio, I've dished out well over $2500. I guess that's how the cookie crumbles. I just had to have the PC4K S-Type series. And they delivered just as much as they were hyped for the most part. So far some of the best emulation of classic hardware. So I can't disagree paying the extra dough isn't so bad...
Except the front page of the Cakewalk website is telling me if I would have waited 4 days I'd have it as a free upgrade! And I thought 30% off was a steal!

If you purchased recently, and would've qualified for the offer, it might be worth contacting Cake and (nicely) inquiring about getting in on the deal.  Never know, maybe they'll give you a break.  They're pretty reasonable like that.  If it's been a while, though, all you can do is chalk it up to the luck of the draw.  It happens to all of us, so you're not alone.  Somebody else got lucky this time, but next time it might be them on the short end.  Like someone else mentioned, it balances out in the end.  Win some you lose some.

I got my upgrade from Studio to Producer about five hours ago and I still haven't received the new serial number (nor is it listed on my Cakewalk Store account)... I wonder how long these things usually take?

I'm wondering whether cake are going to eventually combine producer and expanded into one product as the flagship? yet still have the optional module addons. Would make thing simpler with the updates.

JesusMics: I have to go along with all the feedback you've received, however... In your place, I'd still make the inquiry. It could be likened to the offers Cakewalk makes wherein you buy a current version a few weeks before a planned release and you get the new version as a free upgrade. It's still worth a try, just because you now know you don't really have any complaint. :-)

    Here's my 2 cents worth...

Cake wants to get NEW Customers....obviously the more they have
    the MORE they make...

BUT...when they do this....they should say...hey LOYAL customer,
we're not leaving you out..if you all ready own Producer, YOU can get
this at a reduced price...if you already own Producer Expanded you can

get Zeta 2.1 at a reduced price....etc....that way...no one feels slighted.

    I can't tell you how many times they've done this...it's countless..and increasing
your customer base is what business is all about....but, to be fair...at least
take care of your EXISTING customer base in the process so that no one feels..

HEY IF I HAD WAITED A MONTH I COULD HAVE GOTTEN ALL THIS FOR FREE!!!

Just good marketing and good PR to keep the ALREADY LOYAL base LOYAL....IMHO

You do know that Cakewalk already does offer LOTS of great deals to existing customers? Of course they are trying to entice new customers with freebie stuff, but don't most companies? My cell phone company certainly does not offer me crap unless my contract is up but i get bombarded with ads showing the cool free phone new people get. Cable company offers great deals to new clients...for a limited time. If anything Cakewalk is far more generous than many companies are when it comes to existing customers. When was the last time your internet provider offered you anything other than the initial deal? Has your car dealer called and offered you anything other than a great price on a new car?

Just wait a month and you'll likely see "Buy X1 Producer and get X2 Producer free!"  When X2 comes out, it's likely to contain all the X1 Producer Expanded features in the core program.  Some of the discounted soft synths will be included, as well.  It's the way things have worked for quite a while.  Cakewalk has trained some people to sit back and work the last version until the super discount deals appear.  If you are satisfied with being on the backside of the wave, it works to your budgetary favor.

I bought X1 when it came out and it was almost a year old before I felt like it had matured to the point that I got what I bargained for.  I'm a little wiser with my purchases now.  I can thank CW for teaching me to be that way.

Well I upgraded to Producer Expanded a couple weeks ago, which cost me $99 for Producer and $20 for Expanded. I did not get the Production package. If I would have waited it would now cost me $199 for the Producer upgrade which would take me into the Production suite. An extra $100. So I feel I'm better off with the deal I did get. I could upgrade to the Production suite now but that would cost me another $100. I feel the money was better spent on upgrading Guitar Rig 4 to Guitar Rig 5. So I'm doing okay, no klevetching here.

I purchased x1 Production suite, boxed version at full cost, no special deal a few months ago.
It was a nice surprise to see that Cake was offering their brick wall limiter for just 10 dollars at the time to people making this purchase.
After registering x1 online I tried to obtain the limiter and I was told by the Cake website that I'm not eligible and that I'm not a registered owner of x1 Production suite!!
Just to add insult to injury I regularly get emails from Cakewalk encouraging me to 'upgrade' to sonar studio
I grew a hard shell to 'special offers' since then!

R3V3RB it sounds like your registration had not quite updated when you tried to purchase CL. Did you contact customer support? I suspect they would have fixed that for you. I know results will vary, but I have not had a problem with any of the special deals, even special deals that required me registering another product to be eligible. IS your registration for producer showing in your account now?

@R3V3RB... That's not right. Did you not do the online registration or not register the extras? I bought the Suite retail and after a bit of fiddling I managed to get it registered. Now I have full support and access to the upgrades. This is really something you should get figured out even if you have to call the support line.

I had a pc built for me from ADK and had them install Sonar X1 producer for close to full price. Then when I received my pc, I upgraded to expanded for $49. The next week it went on sale for $19 and now this. I know it's just bad timing, but it does leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Thanks for the replies guys.  it wasn't my intention to Hijack the thread tho, sry!!

Yeah, it seems my registration exists under the Euro section, and i'm from UK so Cake made a mistake because I registered from inside the installer.
I work nights sleep days, so calling cake up isn't as simple as it seems + the offer was at its very end when I hit the problem!
Cakewalk if you want to check my Reg and offer me the limiter I'd be happy , and stop sending me emails to  upgrade to music maker etc!!!
    Cheers Guys.

It is inevitable that most products will have a drastic price reduction and/or extreme sale. This is not new and Cakewalk certainly did not invent it. I know I hate when it happens just as much as the next guy. My solution has been to wait. It took me over a year to upgrade from 8.5 to X1 because I waited for the right deal. I waited to upgrade to expanded as well. CL, $10. rapture upgrade $19. We always have the choice of instant gratification or waiting for the right deal. No matter when you cut the price on something, someone will always miss the cut. I knew people who paid over $900 for cd players when they were first released. I can understand being frustrated, but I'm not sure what people expect Cakewalk to do. Retroactively give every offer ever made to every customer they ever had?

R3V..just shoot them an email. your purchase and registration data is there and I think they will gladly give you the limiter for $10 since it all sounds like a registration glitch.

It's not fair. Bad company policy coming from the CW front office. Zig Ziglar says something like, "You have customers, but do you have happy customers?"

I will be contacting Cakewalk on Monday morning regarding my issue, thanks everyone for at least letting me know it won't hurt. It's not that it wasn't money well spent... it's just money I didn't "have to" spend. Believe it or not, I already waited. I didn't purchase X1 until the Xc update (Studio Version). Then when Xd was released, I purchased Producer for $99.00.  And then again just last week went to Expanded then purchased the Production Suite modules at the sales price (minus Rapture and Z3ta 2). Then again the more I think about it, I am not so bothered by the idea anymore.

I'll try getting a hold of Cakewalk on monday. Thanks for the great replies everyone!

What they can do to be fair is offer all of us early adopters the next major upgrade for FREE for a limited time, say for 14 days only via e-mail invitation. And if we choose to download it, it's FREE and if we don't... we'll have to pay for it when we're ready to upgrade. And as far as those other promotions go, they're a Pay For a product promotion - not a FREE promotion like the one that's currently running. So it's like comparing apples to oranges. It would be a nice thing for Cakewalk to give something back to their early adopting customers, not just better deals and sales but something complimentary like they offer their new customers. And if they don't, we always have a choice. That is why there are other competing companies that make other DAWS and softsynths... because they want to be in business. So being a Cakewalk customer, you're entitled to let them know what you want. And plus, many of you have been very loyal customers and it's a bit of a travesty that they keep giving away Freebies to new customers while us loyal customers still have to pay full price or a discounted price whenever a promotion rolls around. The best thing to do is to not buy in early, or not to buy in at all for any future releases until Cakewalk gives us something back in return. Afterall, we've been keeping them in business. So Brandon, Seth or whoever runs these promotions... give us loyal customers something back in return besides another big Sale.

I too have always hated things like this. From my cable company to my cell phone carrier, they always seem to give out deals to new customers while we that have supported them for years don't ever get a GOOD break. We may hit a decent deal once in a while, but there's nothing I've ever been a part of where the company made me feel like they appreciated my business.

Speaking of the cable thing. I've been with Comcast since they came around here with 2 other names in the 80's. I asked them recently if they could hook me up with anything for being a customer for so long because there are pretty good deals with other companies. Their reply was "no, sorry, but you can always cancel and just pick up the new deal offered."

Cell phone told me the same thing....simply unreal. I've had the same cell phone company and # since 1996. There are plans out from other carriers that obliterate my plan for way less. I figured I'd call and ask if they could do anything as it's only fair to show your loyalty and ask...as I said, they said the same thing. "You can cancel and just re-apply as a new customer." I guess we're supposed to just switch with each new deal that comes along and you're inconvenienced to go through all the change-over stuff each year or whatever?

At any rate, sorry to go off topic...I've just always been against loyal customers never being treated like they ARE truly loyal. It's not just here though....it's with everything. In my business (call me a bad businessman) I've always taken care of loyal customers or repeat customers by doing a little something extra on the house or being extra fair with pricing. They are worth something...without them, I'd not have a business. Just my take though.

Dub had a good post in #3. The only thing I can say there is...there were quite a few that actually felt cheated with the initial release of X1 as it wouldn't work at all for them. Some had issues until the last few patches...so there are a few people in that camp. I wasn't one of them, but I wasn't an immediate X1 fan. It definitely had to grow on me a bit...but I've never felt cheated. I must admit I hate deals like this new one though. But who knows, maybe there will be something for us loyal guys at some point. We can only hope.

The main thing to remember though...all negativity aside, if X1 works for you and is stable, well in my opinion being in this as a business, you can't really put a price on that. If it works well, you get your jobs done and stability is there, it's worth every penny for me even if I'm not down with some of the company based decisions. :)
