Thanks Noel. I wasn't sure if, for the first time, I was going to skip a Cakewalk/Sonar version. I just ordered the upgrade.
On second thought, maybe I shouldn't thank you. I just spent U$179

Real programming, what's that? <g> Seriously what was unprecedented for us, was the amount of work that was done this time on internals - i.e. features that are not directly user visible or stuff that looks very simple on the surface. Myself and Keith spent the greater part of this year staring at code in the audio engine. When you see code permanently etched on your retina you know you have a problem :-)

Overall I hope this explanation helps makes the case to our users for optimizations and internals being treated as equal to other user visible features....

I'm really glad you did the work.
I'm really glad you posted all the details. Pretty unusual in this business - and really appreciated!

I'm really looking forward to checking out S8 "up close and personal"

Thanks, Noel, Keith and everyone else at Cakewalk.

In addition to core optimizations, of course, the features that pop out to me as extremely useful and worth the price alone (if I could afford it now) are Exclusive Solo mode, Solo Override and Clip selection groups. These are better than any new plugs for workflow purposes, IMO.

However, I see no mention of fixes to the clip envelopes, which several people have complained about. And I'm not sure if the audio snap changes that are listed fix problems I've encountered where snapped clips that once played properly, suddenly go awry. These are things I would still like to see in a S7 update.

But all the other features in S8 sound great! Thanks for posting the list!

That's where I WANT to spend my money. SONAR 7 has all the features I need and I have enough instruments/synths. I want stuff that's going to improve performance of what's there and reduce the number of bugs. I've said before that I would have paid for SONAR 8 if there wasn't a single new feature, plug or instrument but the performance, stability and bug list were significantly improved. So for the general customer base you guys probably did exactly the right thing- Some new features balanced with improvements under the hood. Nice.

Thanks,

John

Noel,

Your input here is very much appreciated. I'm really glad to see this thread and the POSITIVE reaction to it. I'm also glad to see all of the details about things that were changed or tweaked in addition to the main marketing points - though I was fairly intersted to begin with. I look forward to getting my hands on this version.

Hi all,
This post by a Cakewalk employee is very cool. It is part of what made me choose Sonar over other DAW's I've been evaluating. I'm coming from a Tascam minidisc 4-track, so it was a big decision. Its posts like this that make me feel good about ultimately choosing Sonar to begin my computer recording experience!

Thanks,

That's a groovy list. It is still however only typed words on a page, so I'm waiting till I can actually demo this stuff for myself first hand before charging anything to my credit card.

RE: SONAR 8 - The fine print 2008/09/24 11:31:42 (permalink)
I'm really impressed by this list, and it's good to see the 'old' Cakewalk determination and hospitality in place. I was really worried since Roland had taken over, and the forums seemed quieter than usual, but now I see that it was because you were so busy.

I've worked on code before, and yes, it is much harder to optimize something rather than just do it to a workable goal. The ASIO optimizations will really benefit me since I was loathe to sell my Lynx Two, and had no idea if Sonar 8 would fix the ASIO engine, or if I would have to wait until 9 or 10.

In reality, I'm ecstatic over the advances and the new synths. But, most of all I'm happy because you listened to the user base and gave most of us what we wanted, which was a plethora of tweaks under the hood to make the program more stable. I can only imagine the nightmare of having to work with all the poorly coded drivers on the market right now.

It looks like you may have hit a grand slam instead of just a home run with this version. I feel like my confidence will not only be restored in Sonar, but in the company as a whole.

Thank you!!!

Absolutely! This sort of post from a CTO which Noel said "I culled most of this from our internal engineering notes." is virtually unprecedented from a large company. I'm astounded at the detail in it, and as others have pointed out, this should have been on the "what's new" webpage on the 22nd. (sure, put it under a "geeky details" sub-link...) With the Roland factor, I was thinking that info like this was never going to be seen, but good job Cakewalk!

Although, dare I cynically hypothesize that Marketing took a look at it and said "That's not sexy enough. Can we throw in Dimension Pro too?"

RE: SONAR 8 - The fine print 2008/09/24 11:44:49 (permalink)
Very nice list.

I'm one of the "where did the Sonar 7 patches go" guys, however:
- this list completely explains, to me anyway, where all the work was going... as a developer, I definitely understand the difficulties in having multiple branches of code (the old and the new), and the myriad of debates around where to fix what, particularly when the new code branch is significantly different than the old one and an issue has already been fixed on the new one, which this definitely looks like it would do.

You should publish a "how to sell the not-so-sexy refactors" paper so we can use it here at my company, where we're continuously being shot down by marketing because we want to spend money for "nothing" (in their non-engineering opinions).
It's great to see that you guys found a way to get buy-off for that sort of thing.

I've been on the fence where this upgrade was concerned, but you solidly tore the fence down.
Wish I had time to beta test these days. I don't, unfortunately, but that seems like it would have been fun to work on.
Maybe someday.

Thanks,
- zevo

Thanks Noel. This is the difference between Cakewalk and other audio software companies. That list had some really good information that helps make the real decision on the upgrade. As I use ASIO primarily, you had me convinced quite early on in your list! :)

Really professional of you to post that from your engineering reports. You have my respect.

I thought that. That whole "re-amping over USB" thing you can with the XT is really cool, but it's a bit of a hassle with all the restarting you have to do in Sonar.

It's a good point, but I think it's worth making the distinction that what people really get upset about is what they see as work-stopping bugs not being fixed. Making things run better is a different thing, and I think most sensible people don't have a problem with paying for that. I'm aware that the line between those two things is actually fuzzier than it might intuitively seem, though.

Oh my gosh...wow, have I been too busy. I almost missed the S8PE release news. ...just shows what changing jobs, moving into new studio space & working on several new projects will do to your 'forum awareness'.

Sooo what looks cool:

Performance Optimizations -- YEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
ASIO Enhancements - A couple of these look really handy
Audio driver changes without restart - NIIIICE
Misc User Interface Enhancements - Some great stuff

Where do I get in line????

ORIGINAL: Noel Borthwick [Cakewalk]

SONAR is now able to display meaningful real-world parameter values for VST plug-ins instead of generic values (0.0 through 1.0). For example, an equalize plug-in might show 20kHz instead of 1.0.

Does this mean that when moving automation envelope nodes, we'll now see actual values of the parameter being changed instead of the generic 0-1.0? If so, that is awesome!!! I've been missing that function in Sonar since I quite Pro Tools back in 2005.
