In fact, I assumed because I got the advertisemet that Cakewalk was selling the latest version.

3) I just joined this forum, AFTER I bought the 8.5 sales pitch...

With the immediate access to information available throught the internet, you really don't need to assume anything from an advertisement.  It would have been pretty easy to determine that 8.5 was getting close to a year old.  Personally, I don't drop money on anything until I'm satisfied I have sufficient information to make an informed purchase, but then we obviously approach purchases differently.

You indicated in an earlier thread that your primary motivation to upgrade to 8.5 was a desire to get Session Drummer 3 as oppossed to getting the latest and greatest Sonar.

Give em a call. They've made plenty of exceptions for me in the past. One time they were giving away Rapture with Sonar 8 pro purchases. I'd purchased sonar 8.5 6 months before the Rapture deal and they gave me a free serial for it. They are incredibly cool guys.

Wow, now you're going to lecture me and criticize me on how I purchase stuff...too funny...but noted...dad.

Wow, your looking up my previous posts.  What, do you like have stock in Cake or what?

I don't know, it's possible that I joined back in....2006...I don't really remember.  but, since your being soooo...ah...thorough...why not check on my posting history.  I'm sure you'll find a huge gap between 2006 and 2010.  You really should check stuff like that BEFORE you imply that someone you don't even know is a liar!

Too funny.

Question for Cakewalk...

Some of us want to have the immediate access of the download version but also want a copy of the physical media.

If we purchase the boxed version online, will we be given access to the downloadable version as well?

Or

Will their be a downloadable version sold that allows you to purchase separately mailed physical media for an additional fee?

-e.B

I haven't seen info to this effect, but that's what I did with 8.5 so I'm guessing I'll be able to do that with X1 as well...

Re:SONAR X1 upgrade questions and answers 2010/11/05 11:21:53 (permalink)
Although I too, like many others who have posted replies to this thread, felt cheated at first for having upgraded to 8.5 based on the "LOYAL CUSTOMER" offer, I should give it to you guys for pricing the X1 upgrade fairly and maximizing the "consumer surplus" (alert....economics term!! )

Why is the pricing fair?  I paid $149 to upgrade from Home Studio 7 XL to 8.5 Producer just two months ago.  If I need to now upgrade to X1 Producer, I pay $99.  The total comes up to $248 for me to go from HS7XL to X1 Producer.  If you look at how the current upgrade to 8.5 Producer from HS7 (with a free upgrade to X1 Producer) is priced, it shows up as $249.   Hence, it is an equivalent price.

Now here is where I should give it to the Cakewalk pricing specialists for their genius.  I mean that without being sarcastic.  Someone like myself, a hobbyist, may have considered the $249 ONE-TIME jump too much to warrant upgrading from HS7XL to X1.  They have now been able to grab $149 from folks like me instead of getting $0 thereby attempting to maximize their consumer surplus.  I now own a software that does way more than what I want it to do.  Neat strategy on CW's part!

One thing is for sure....next time I will do more research by visiting the CW forum when I get another cheesy "LOYAL CUSTOMER" offer from Cakewalk!!!!!

Dude, take a look at my posting history.  This site allows you to look back at the latest 100 posts.  I have at TOTAL of 127.  Of the the 127 a full 100 have been since Sept. 22 - 2010.  I'd be willing to bet that most of the remaining 27 are close to that date.

I'm guessing that I joined back in 2006 because I had some issue or other with setting up SONAR.  Once that was resolved, I didn't come back until Sept, 2010 and I certainly don't remember joining a site at which I only posted a few threads.

The point is, I did NOT know Cake was about to release X1 until AFTER I purchased 8.5.  I haven't been on this site, as far as I can remember, since 2006.  In fact, I don't even remember signing up back then.  I did own a Cakewalk product back then so it is possible and my join date bares that out.  But to suggest that I should have known about the pending X1 release because it's been talked about here for the last year is just plain wrong because I haven't been here for a very long time.

I really don't see that as a credibility issue.  I joined, according to the join date, back in 2006.  I don't remember joining and I certainly wasn't hanging around reading posts for the past 4 years in silence.  When I bought SONAR 8.5, in September, I had a few issues and that's when and why I came back to this site.

And...yeehaaaa...I'm still in a great mood.  I can't wait to start using 8.5 on a great PC.  And, I look forward to upgrading to X1.

Upgrade to X1 FRUSTRATION 2010/11/05 13:35:23 (permalink)
Well, I'm not a very happy Cakewalk customer right now.

Why?

It seems to me that the current upgrade scheme doesn't make much sense to me.

First, the current upgrade policy states that if you purchase 8.5 upgrade now, you receive the X1 upgrade for FREE.

What about those, like myself, who upgraded to 8.5 earlier this year???   Are we being penalized for upgrading early???

I know that I don't HAVE to upgrade to the new version, but why should I have to pay $99.00 more, when others can purchase the same upgrade I did, and get the X1 for FREE???

1.  I purchased the 8.5 Studio Upgrade
2.  Next, I purchased the 8.5 Studio upgrade to Producer 8.5  in Feb. 2010
3.  Now I have to  (if I choose) spend $99.00 to get the X1 upgrade.

Had I waited until now, I would spend the same $99.00 that I did back in February, and get the upgrade for FREE.  Where is the logic?

I wouln't be irritated if they were charging others $198.00 to upgrade.  That seems to make more sense to me.

I believe, under Cakewalk's current upgrade procedure, that the current 8.5 users are getting bilked out of an additional $99.00 (if we choose), and the new upgraders are getting a free ride.

Plus, with Cake's drop in retail price for their products, those who have waited until recently to purchase their Sonar are getting one heck of a deal.

Am I alone in this frustration?

I really feel that I should be entitled to the free upgrade for upgrading earlier this year.

Thoughts?  Cakewalk?

Please!!

If they were to give you the upgrade for free, how about me who upgraded just two or three months before you? Where would it end?
Is it just me, or is the Nerd Rage especially violent this year?

People all over this place whining about what they've got and what they haven't based on a marketing video!

Wait for the demo to come out, try it and if you think it's worth $99 (or whatever they're asking British people to pay this year) then buy it! Simple as that!

Software developers must be longing for the days before the internet.

While i can see where you're coming from, February was a long time ago now... Where would you draw the line, why not offer free upgrade for users who purchased last year... 'ya know...

I think the reason why Cakewalk are offering the free upgrade is because they can get sales now, rather than having a month with zero sales. (But of course i could be wrong.)

It's like everything else you buy.
It's called marketing and every company on the planet does it.

You could walk into any shop on Monday and buy an item.
On Tuesday they may sell the same item with something thrown in for free.
On wednesday they may have the item half price. etc..
You chose to buy it on Monday, so don't get any subsequent discounts.
That's just the way it goes.
Do you complain to the supermarket when they sell apples at half price and you bought them last week at full price?

Are we being penalized for upgrading early???

You are NOT being "penalized" - you have been using the software for months and making hundreds of thousands of dollars in music royalties as a result.
If you are not making money, maybe it's because you are spending all your time *itching and not enough time using the software.

Come on, dude!  It's a freakin' hundred dollars to get a totally revamped DAW.
You DO realize that if they give the software away for free then they go out of business and there are no future versions at all ?

Old, old, old argument that comes up every year at upgrade time.

The short rebuttal is this:

You've been able to use Sonar 8.5 since February (for 8 months!).  That period of usage is what you paid for.

The person who chose to wait until now to upgrade did not have use of Sonar 8.5.  Consequently they get the better deal.

(I can see someone who upgraded last week being ticked off... But eight months ago?!  Man, you are so missing the big picture).

Thoughts?
There is a parable that Jesus told that goes something like this:

A guy who owned a vineyard and a winery went into town to look for laborers to work in his vineyard.  He found some fellows hanging around doing nothing who agreed to come and work for a penny a day.  He sent them to his vineyard and the foreman put them to work.
Three hours later, he went out and found some guys standing around doing nothing in the marketplace.   He told them that if they wanted to work, he’d put them to work in his vineyard.  They said they needed the money so they hauled butt out to the vineyard and went to work.
Three hours after that, the guy went into town, found some more workers.   Then again, three hours after that and then finally when there was only about an hour’s worth of day light left he rounded up some more fellows and put them to work.
So, when there was no more light to work by, the guy called the guys in to pay them off starting with the guys who came in last.  He gave that group a penny.   Then he paid the next group and penny, and the next group a penny, until he got to the bunch that he had called in the first thing in the morning and he paid them a penny.   Well, the guys in the group that worked all day started to whine…..this was a vineyard and a winery after all.
They said;”WTF?   Some of these guys worked for one friggin’ hour and they got a penny, and some of those other guys worked half a day and got a penny, and we bust our donkeys all day long and all we get is a miserable penny too?”
And the owner of the vineyard and winery said, “How did I do you good people any wrong?   You agreed to work all day for a penny, and I gave you penny.    These other good people came out and worked for an hour and I chose to give them a penny too, which I have a lawful right to do.    It is no evil that I’ve done to you because I’ve chosen to be good these others.   Peace be unto you.  Now, stop your whining and get the heck off my property before I sic my dogs on you, you ungrateful SOBs.”
The story went something like that anyway.

Re:Upgrade to X1 FRUSTRATION 2010/11/05 15:08:24 (permalink)
I wouln't be irritated if they were charging others $198.00 to upgrade.  That seems to make more sense to me.

Will it make you happy if I say that I will do everything in my power to pay them $198 for the upgrade?

Because I will*

*say it, that is.
