SONAR X1 upgrade questions and answers
I have seen a few posts on upgrades so I thought a sticky would help. New customers and customers upgrading to SONAR 8.5 in November If you upgrade to SONAR 8.5/Home Studio 7 XL or buy SONAR 8.5/SONAR Home Studio 7 XL at a shop you will get the equivalent SONAR X1 version for free. The free upgrade will be a download. Customers who already own SONAR 8.5/SONAR Home Studio 7/XL and purchased before Nov 1 (upgrade or new package) There is an upgrade path already for you and you can purchase in December. SONAR 8.5 Producer -> SONAR X1 Producer $99/£89/€99 SONAR 8.5 Studio -> SONAR X1 Studio $99/£89/€99 SONAR Home Studio/XL -> SONAR X1 Essential $59/£49/€59 Where can I find details on my upgrade path if it is not listed above? We have a dedicated page to upgrade pricing. SONAR X1 upgrade pricing. Why does the page say some prices may increase Dec 8th? Some customers will go from being one version behind to two versions behind once SONAR X1 ships. That will raise the upgrade price. We wanted to point out that it is cheaper to upgrade to SONAR 8.5 from SONAR 8 in November (and get SONAR X1 free) compared to waiting until December and paying extra to jump 2 versions. Will my SONAR 8.5 to SONAR X1 price increase in Dec? No. Will the upgrade be a download? Yes. You can add a Boxed upgrade option for a nominal fee (pricing TBA). Can I purchased an upgrade at my retailer where I normally do? Yes and it will be a DVD set, manual and box. I already own the latest version can I pre order SONAR X1? You can start placing orders beginning in Dec. If I buy SONAR 8.5 (Studio or Producer) or SONAR Home Studio XL at a shop will I get SONAR X1 for free? Yes. Please ensure you register so you will get a free update. How will I know when my free update is ready? The email address used to register will be sent instructions on how to download your copy of SONAR X1. Regards, Robin

I misunderstoof the price increase business so I bought 8.5 Producer now (with discs for $119) even though I've owned it since release last year. this gives me 2 licenses, with the free upgrade in dec to X1. i'd prefer not to get the S 8.5 discs now uut get them for X1 in Dec. do you think Customer Service might conisder helping me out with this?

A side question on upgrading, I currently have both 8 and 8.5 installed on my hard drive. Will I be able to remove these instances if I purchase the upgrade with the disks? I would really like to do a clean install once I upgrade. Best, Harry

SONAR X1 is a separate install and does not require SONAR 8.5 to be on the system to run. Robin

You're not punished. It's just Cakewalk's last push to sell 8.5. And, it winds up a little cheaper than if you don't own ANY Cakewalk products. Personally, I'm happy with the upgrade price. I just don't see much besides cosmetics that's anything different.....

You can do that, but it'll cost you a bit more than if you had the current version. But there's a LOT of difference between what you have and what you'll be getting! Worth it...go for it!

I think that people who upgraded to 8.5 within the last couple of months ARE being penalized: If I had not bought 8.5 a month ago I could upgrade to X1 for $99. But since I'm such a loyal customer it's going to cost me $178 ($79 for the 8.5 upgrade plus another $99 for X1).

+1 - I too upgraded to SHS7xl before Nov 1st and the scenario re paying more to upgrade to X1 just makes me feel used and even coming to the forum has now lost its glow - kinda sad really seems to be a marketing strategy across the board eg insurance, ISP's etc reward the newcommers and stiff the established clients think I'll take a break from coming here for a while best to all sol

Maybe a silly question. If I buy the Boxed 8.5 of producer (+£20) does that = boxed version of x1 or is there another fee on top for the boxed x1? Or can I buy the download version of 8.5, maybe not download, add the x1 boxed fee and just wait until dec for it to turn up?

Just do what you did this year. Wait till nearly the end of the cycle and get it a reduced price again. 8.5 was available since Nov 09 I believe. You paid less then those of us that bought it when it was released but the time you bought it at was a choice you made. Just think about buying a new car. When the new models are about to be released the previous models get discounted but you are still getting a brand new vehicle. If you bought it a month earlier you still paid the full price. You have been a member since May of 09 so you have already gone through an upgrade cycle so you should have been aware of approximately when a new version would likely be released just as we know new car models are likely to be introduced in fall. Cakewalk's policy for free upgrades has been consistent for years now and is well in line with what other software providers do. Although it may appear that I am picking on you specifically when there are others complaining about the same thing that is not my intention. It is reply to the general tone of the thread that I am trying to address.

I agree about the free upgrade date cutoff being a bit of a punch to the gut... I myself JUST bought 8.5 because I thought it was the latest and greatest SONAR for some time (got it bought, installed, and registered just 28 days before the announcement of X1...). There was no hint or talk of a new version coming. Most people here on the forums didn't think a new version was coming til next year. If I'd have known that a new version would be coming out in just a couple months, OBVIOUSLY I'd have waited for the purchase. Now I just feel rather disappointed =/ I really think there ought to be a little leniency with this free upgrade, ESPECIALLY since there was zero hint of any new version coming... What if someone bought 8.5 on October 30th? Seriously... There ought to be at least a month or two grace period for the free upgrade, for the people who JUST spent the money to buy 8.5. How about it, Cakewalk? Please. Just paid for the best SONAR; can't pay again this quickly...
