If we buy the download version , can we order the hard copy of the disk too for $20 or so dollars as we were able to do with 8.5?

From the first post in the thread:

Will the upgrade be a download?
Yes. You can add a Boxed upgrade option for a nominal fee (pricing TBA).

I'm one of these folks.  i waited until end of Sept/Oct to upgrade to Producer 8.5 (I have owned Sonar since Cakewalk 8).  However, now, I find out if I had waited a month, I would get an overhauled UI version...  Not a very good business model.  Your punishing your longtime/loyal customers...

Really?

I upgraded last February, and am waiting to upgrade again now.

I certainly don't feel "punished"

We live in strange times indeed, when companies selling products actually get flack for introducing a price reduction for people who have recently bought an item which is soon to be supersceded. (The important word there is 'recently')

I to bought Sonar 8.5 recently. Although quite not as recently as some of the guys above. I think that there is no reason why they shouldn't be either giving Sonar X1 to current 8.5 owners or not be giving it to new users who are just using Sonar because it was a good deal. There are many people on this forum who through the months/years/decades who have been very loyal to this DAW, and who have bought all the upgrades. Why shouldn't the people who actually went out and bought Sonar 8.5 get at least a break like the loyalty programs that car manufacturers are getting. WHY NOT AT LEAST A BREAK? WHY NOT FREE????

How much would an upgrade from Sonar 8.5 Studio to Sonar X1 producer be, as I currently run 8.5 Studio that actually could be a deal, glad I held off on buying 8.5 producer though:):)

I think CW have upset a lot of users.
I can see both sides of the arguement.

One side is straight forward marketing.
I don't think anyone has any issues about CW increasing/decreasing the prices to pull in more sales.
It's the getting X1 free thats annoying most.

Look at it this way.
If I notice VW have a new Golf out next month then if I walk into a VW showroom today they will probably give me a pretty good deal on the current Golf as they want to clear the shelves/forecourt reading for the new stock... that is fully acceptable.
I doubt anyone would argue with that sort of Sales practice.
Now.
What I'm sure they won't do is sell me a current Golf, and then give me the new Golf when it comes out AND let me keep the one I just bought as well.
I think most would argue that is mad sales practice.
The reason is once I got my new upgraded VW Golf I would just sell my then old-style Golf I'd had for a week or so. Again nobody would argue with me doing that.

So, on that basis, back to CW and Sonar, why not...
Buy you brand new Sonar 8.5 now.
Don't use/install it.
Get the Sonar X1 upgrade.
Sell your unused/uninstalled 8.5, and more-or-less get your money back!

You can't re-sell Sonar, it is registered to you.  If you don't register your Sonar, then your serial number is not converted into the authorisation code required for Sonar to exit demo mode AND you won't be able to upgrade to X1 without a valid registration to upgrade from...

The wording for the "Get X1 for free" offer is basicaly backwards...  It should read "Pay us $99, $142, $199 IN ADVANCE and we'll let you use 8.5 while you wait for 8th Dec to come around..."

So tell me then.
What's the point of buying it now (and therefore getting v8.5).
Then I'll have software that I've used for about 2 weeks and never use again!

Why not just wait until December and by X1 then, not bothering with 8.5

Geez I guess I just don't see the issue here.

I upgraded to 8.5 earlier this year, I got to USE IT during that time, and now I will pay a discounted price of $100 to upgrade to X1.  Thanks Sonar, I appreciate the break on the price.

Now why give the folks buying 8.5 TODAY a better break, they are only going to use it for a short time and it keeps the cash flow coming in the door at a time when most people would just wait for X1.

I have been developing software ( or at least running teams which develop it ) for close to 30 years now.  And there is one fact, the last couple of months before final release are VERY resource intensive.  You are fixing all the bugs that the testers reported in, you are adjusting any features which had unexpected fall out, you are ramping up production of physical product.  You NEED the cash flow to get through this.

Instead of whining I am just happy to be getting a break on the new product and having CW recongnize me as a repeat client.

I am curious, how many of you give a break on albums to people who bought your last release?  Why not?

Not likely. I think most of us realize that even if we had to pay double the current prices, it would still be a bargain. The people who even bother to come to the forums, much less post, are a miniscule fraction of the people who actually own the software. Most of the people who sit around ****ing online seem to be cheapskate pensioners who want something to complain about. If we simply gave the people in the UK their own forum, the signal to noise ratio would drop considerably when it comes to complaints. By looking at the forums over the past month, the posters from the UK are definitely living up to their reputation for being the most miserable people on the planet. Even if your gripes are founded, the lack of tact when dealing with issues would make me turn a deaf ear to you also. It doesn't matter which music forum you visit, the people from the UK are always the rudest, most thankless bunch to deal with. Especially when it comes to spending money. I'm definitely not rich or even well to do after being out of work for almost three years and losing a majority of my recording gear, which is now being slowly replaced through sheer will and hard work. I even give blood twice a week to add something to the pot for my purchases. It's all about perspective, and you people never would have made it back when things cost one hell of a lot more than they do now.

Are you serious about those system requirements?  2.67 GHz Core Duo is a pretty fast machine, at least if you're on a laptop.
Indeed, that's just beyond the specs of my Thinkpad T61 DAW (Core Duo, but only 2.2 GHz) which is currently happily running Sonar 8.5.  So I guess I'm not gong to upgrade Sonar until I get another DAW, which may be another year or two out.   Could someone at Cakewalk please explain what's been done to make X1 significantly more of a load on CPUs than previous Sonars?

Good for you,  would you pay 40% extra for everything you've replaced?  I don't mean if the prices were 40% higher, I mean if all the retailers charged YOU 40% more than everyone else...
I even give blood twice a week to add something to the pot for my purchases.

You charge for your blood? Wow.  In the UK it's considered an honour to give blood.  We're given a cup of tea and a biscuit in return for our generosity.
It's all about perspective,
Yes it is,  and from our perspective we're being charged 40% more than everyone else...

The funniest thing about all of this stuff is this: If Cake had decided to stop the "SONAR" line and call the new line, say, "QUASAR", nobody would feel ripped off. They would be the first in line to pay 400 bucks or more and be extremely happy to have Skylight, ProChannel, and all of the other features they now feel were "stolen" from them. It's amazing... and hilarious...

Will we be able to use our same color schemes from previous releases?

Does the browser window keep everything in one area of the hard drive(s) or does it follow how we set up our folder options?

Is there a global options preset options? Most set up their global options the same way all the time and it's tiresome having to keep changing everything with each release or if your stuck doing a re-install. Maybe a little nitpicky there but there you go.

Will the upgrade price of $99 for 8.5 users increase after Dec 8th? Or stay the same/lower? I have to wait to test the demo, and I'd hate for the price to jump during that waiting time ><

First post...

Will my SONAR 8.5 to SONAR X1 price increase in Dec?
No.

But if you want to "lock in" your SONAR upgrade price, send a check for the sum of $150, made out to me, and I will personally guarantee that you won't pay more than $150 for your 8.5 => X1 upgrade. Ever.

Doesn't specify if the price will increase after December. It's not clear what the price will be after the demo is finally released.
