Demanding stuff for free is fairly weird. Once you get to "I don't care about not getting a bargain as long as nobody else does", you're into plain nuts territory.

Wow...I must have scoffed down a big bowl of dumb-a*s before posting my message. In the span of 2 hours I got a religion lesson, a marketing lecture and a comedy act. Impressive. Kool-aide is flowing on this thread. To respond to the responders.... First, bringing up a 2000 year old story is just plain silly. They didn't even have computers and DAW's back then. If I'm crazy for not agreeing with Cake's upgrade/pricing policy, you are just as crazy for getting depressed while reading forum messages. For what it's worth, I make literally hundreds of dollars per year on my musical talents, which is in return paid back in beer money Finally- "Have you ever noticed? You should get the IT dudes to map the thread banishing function to the Alderan on the v700. That would be some satisfying move right there.

To those who recently bought SONAR 8.5 with the loyal customer deal and feel ripped off for not catching the "Buy 8.5 now and get X1 FREE" deal... don't. I've been informed that to get the X1 free deal, you wouldn't be able to pay the loyal customer price for 8.5, but instead, the full upgrade price. Sooooo, in the end, if you bought 8.5 with the loyal customer deal, and pay the $99 to upgrade to X1 after Dec 8, you'll have paid the same amount as anyone who buys 8.5 now and gets X1 free. Kind of puts things a bit more at ease for people in that situation. For those who recently bought 8.5 at full price however, I'm not sure. Give Cakewalk a call and see what they can do for ya.

I think the solution to upgrade envy is simple - Stop giving upgrades to select individuals for free. After all, it is an upgrade. If you buy Sonar 8.5 and X1 comes out the next week, no problem. Pay the $99 and you now have X1. To me that's simple and fair.

I do sympathize with the folks that need to pay for the upgrade, my first upgrade to Sonar was Studio7 and 2 weeks later the version was no longer available and a newer version half the price was available. I learned to take control of the important software I'm buying and research before I buy. Sorry to upset anyone but not this time, just upgraded to 8.5 and this is my free update happy dance

DaveSchuler I think that people who upgraded to 8.5 within the last couple of months ARE being penalized: If I had not bought 8.5 a month ago I could upgrade to X1 for $99. But since I'm such a loyal customer it's going to cost me $178 ($79 for the 8.5 upgrade plus another $99 for X1). I just bought the full version of 8.5 about 9 days ago. Registered 3 days before the news. Fortunately,I saved $99 on the full version. So I can use that toward my upgrade. I was going to use that $99 on "The Glue" but seems Pro Channel will have that covered. So either way I'm spending $99. Fortunately,Cakewalk is giving me an opportunity to get more bang for my buck when I do. But I hear ya about being out of the loop.

lorneyb2 solomoned +1 - I too upgraded to SHS7xl before Nov 1st and the scenario re paying more to upgrade to X1 just makes me feel used and even coming to the forum has now lost its glow - kinda sad really seems to be a marketing strategy across the board eg insurance, ISP's etc reward the newcommers and stiff the established clients think I'll take a break from coming here for a while best to all sol There is a simple solution for you. Just do what you did this year. Wait till nearly the end of the cycle and get it a reduced price again. 8.5 was available since Nov 09 I believe. You paid less then those of us that bought it when it was released but the time you bought it at was a choice you made. Just think about buying a new car. When the new models are about to be released the previous models get discounted but you are still getting a brand new vehicle. If you bought it a month earlier you still paid the full price. You have been a member since May of 09 so you have already gone through an upgrade cycle so you should have been aware of approximately when a new version would likely be released just as we know new car models are likely to be introduced in fall. Cakewalk's policy for free upgrades has been consistent for years now and is well in line with what other software providers do. Although it may appear that I am picking on you specifically when there are others complaining about the same thing that is not my intention. It is reply to the general tone of the thread that I am trying to address. That's the solution! The added advantage there is that a lot of the bugs/fixes have been installed into the install files too

Link me to a previous post if this question wasn't already asked. Will X1 programing code address multiple cores CPU such as I7 or X6 in a distributing the task to more cores than two as specified by the system requirements? I was attending a university open house and listen to the computer professor comments on codes and how multiple cores require serious recoding to benefit multitask core handling of software. Also next year I plan to upgrade my eco two core system to system with more horse power

Sonar has had multi-core support in for several years. I can't imagine they've taken it out.

Very excited about the upgrade. Happy to pay for all the excellent features... One small request though... Is it possible that the upgrade files can actually be the full version with all the previous 6,7,8.5 mods, updates, additional session drummer content etc...? I'd love to ditch the complex chain of upgrades I had to install the last time I built a new machine

From what I read, I can get a *download* version of X1 after 12/8/2010. Do I have to keep 8.5 Producer installed in order to install X1? Are these going to be full disks? If not, can I purchase media for an additional cost? Sorry for all the questions :( P.S. How are you guys gonna handle the bandwidth? Those DVD's are pretty full!

2. Are these going to be full disks? If not, can I purchase media for an additional cost? 1. You do not, but many do at least for a while; sometimes content is dropped and you may want to insure it stays around. 2. The download (like 8.5) should be a full independent install. The site says you can order medio for an extra cost (~$15 IIRC for 8.x)

The site says you can order medio for an extra cost (~$15 IIRC for 8.x) It will be like last year, the full install is just too big for a single download. So.... You have 8.5.3 installed. You download the X1 upgrade which then uses your 8.5.3 as the main source media. You end up with a full install of 8.5.3 AND a full install of X1. You can then delete the 8.5.3 if you wish. If you don't have 8.5 then you can't upgrade to X1 from the download, you need to either upgrade to 8.5 now, or buy X1 on disk after 8/12
