The free SONAR X1 free upgrade is available for anyone who purchases or registers a copy of SONAR 8.5 between Nov. 1st 2010 and Dec. 31st 2010.

I bought the 8.5 upgrade (from the CW site) as soon as the free X1 upgrade was announced.  I have no need for 8.5 upgrade from 8.  Do I need to install it just to register it?  Or, having bougth it from CW, is it automatically registered already?  Thanks for any guidance.

Confused about the X1Upgrade 2010/11/22 17:18:50 (permalink)
Man, was I ever confused....

I thought X1 was some kind of complement to 8.5.  I run S7Pro right now, and I called to find out how to upgrade to 8.5 and get the X1 as a boxed version for a reduced price, as I cannot get hi speed internet in the middle of nowhere, which is where I reside.

The guy at Cakewalk advised that I skip getting 8.5 altogether, and purchase an S7Pro to X1 Pro directly for $149, and this option will become available December 8th.

When looking at the stuff I could find out about X1, it doesn't seem to show the usual bells and whistles about included plug ins, instruments, etc.

Can anyone help me out here? I've been running S7Pro and dragging my feet about upgrading out of fear of rocking the boat of my very stable and functional setup, and I want to make sure I'm getting this right. Its the prospect of that Pro Strip that is making me go forward.

Thanks everyone. Sorry if this seems kind of confused or naive.... I'm more of a musician than a techie.

There's not any way to get the discounted price for current 8.5 users at an online store like Sweetwater or Musician's Friend, is there?

I want to get the boxed version, but is the Cakewalk store going to have it available by the 8th or close enough after?... Or will it not be 'til, like, the new year?

I emailed Guitar Center and they said they would have the boxed version on the 12th or 13th Dec (can't remember which).

My DAW: Intel i5, Cakewalk UA-1G, Win7 64 bit, SONAR X1a Producer 64 bit

Bump.  I suspect I'm not the only one who bought 8.5 just for the free upgrade to X1.  I have no need for anything in 8.5.  So, do I need to install 8.5 just to do the registration?  Or did the fact that I bought/downloaded directly from CW mean I'm registered already?

I'm not sure how the X1 upgrade download will work but the 8.5 download upgrade needs to be installed over 8.0 i.e. 8.0 needs to be present.

I'd hazard a guess that the X1 upgrade will need to have 8.5 on the system.

Of course I have no idea if that's factual - just my best guess.

Normally you don't need to have the prior version installed. Normally with a point upgrade you do.

Just to clarify I was talking about the download version of 8.5, I'm assuming the download of X1 will be the same. The boxed versions I assume will not require the previous version. Some confirmation would be nice though.

No - you will not need to have any prior version of SONAR installed to install SONAR X1.

But that doesn't answer my question.  To get our free upgrade from 8.5, it's been clearly explained we need to register 8.5.  I purchased and downloaded 8.5 from CW.  Am I automatically registered (and ready to download X1 on 12/8), or do I need to install 8.5 just to go through the registration part of the install?

Thanks in advance for hopefully clearing this up.

dmbair,
Check your registration list by logging into your cakewalk store account. Click on "My registrations". Your 8.5 download should be listed there with its serial number and registration code.

I'm not planning to install my recently purchased 8.5 either.

If you've never installed S8.5, and don't ever intend installing it, and so it's just going to be sitting somewhere doing nothing... then sell it.

You'd do that with anything else you had.

There is actually a market for Sonar on eBay.

Yeah, I feel sorry for all those unused bits.  I even considered not downloading it.
I can't resell it because I bought it on the CW store and it's registered. Actually, the upgrade/version free deal requires registering it.

OK - this is my question. Not sure if this has been answered but here goes:

I own 8.5 already, but if I buy another upgrade to 8.5 (and tick the boxed option), do I get the X1 upgrade and do I get the option to download and the boxed media too?

What's wrong with just buying the X1 upgrade on the 8th?

I'm easily confused... But from what I've heard it is going to be cheaper to buy it before release than after? I don't know - this is one promotion I've not quite sussed out yet!!!

Maybe I should just moan about having to spend my money on another upgrade like everyone else!!! Moan, whinge, curse...

It's only cheaper before 8th Dec if you own Sonah but NOT 8.5

If you already own 8.5 the price stays the same.

Hi Robin,

Looking forward to X1 Producer and I have a question. If I put through an order for X1 Producer online via Cakewalk's website will I be able to download X1 while I wait for my boxed version to arrive in the mail? I really want the box version but don't want to wait an extra week or two to actually install X1 and learn the functions if I don't have to. Please let me know.

Thanks!

Thanks.  That did the trick.  For anyone following this, the 8.5 download purchase from CW resulted in a registered 8.5.

OK so I'm an 8.3.1 PE user that's taking advantage of the free X1 offer. My question: since the new release comes out in 6 days, can I just wait and install X1 directly over 8.3.1, or do I have to go through the proper iteration and install 8.5 first?

SONAR X1 is a standalone installation and doesn't have any dependency on previous versions of SONAR.
