Ozz you are a very good friend to the OP. I will keep everything you have said in mind whenever your friend comes back. Don't worry we will handle him with respect and care. I knew exactly where he was coming from and I think it is evident in my post to him. We are here to help not to make quick judgments or cause anyone to feel worse for having been here. Tell him he is very welcome here and that we hope he comes back to let us help him.

I agree the OP is not a jerk. Also, as soon as a computer gets involved, there's an additional overlay beyond just the recording software. It's not easy to learn what is essentially an entire recording studio, not just a "tape recorder." Tape recorders are easy . Recording studios are not. I've thought about this a lot, and would love to see SONAR have "levels" like a video game. So the first level would be "I want to record stuff and mix it." The second would be "I want to edit what I recorded and add processing when I mix it." And so on. I had a friend who said SONAR 8.5 was waaaaay too complicated. Given how customizable it was, I created a version that looked just like an ADAT and had the same functionality. That's a great place to start and I don't think it would hurt any DAW to remember that some people are just starting out with it.

I agree with Craig on all but the video game part, (because I am terrible at Black Ops 2). There was endless debate from a group of users who were absolutely brilliant in their knowledge of keyboard shortcuts and work flow in 8.5.3, who HATED the whole notion of the Sonar X1, because the UI was WAY different. Cakewalk had put a giant amount of effort and cost into a complete redesign, to make it easier for folks to buy the product and be able to get up and running with an ability to record and mix without the massive learning curve of getting through understanding 8.5.3's complicated presentation. Thinking about it all, it DOES make sense to have some sort of way to present a limited functionality basic process set of screens for newcomers, and for those just doing quick and dirty simple projects. I also think that would be best as some way to control through some changeable options, so that as their skills and understanding grew, they could open up more complex features, like a Basic and Advanced approach to the UI presentation layer. So, yeah - I would think that makes sense. Bob Bone

Agree about Groove 3. When I upgraded to X1 from a really old version of Sonar, I bought the X1 Explained video series and it was excellent. Like most people, in a normal session I only need about 25% of the available functions so I watched the key videos to get started and then watched one every night as I went along. I still pull one up from time to time when I need a function I don't use often. About the Internet, I unplug the Ethernet cable (or you could turn off wireless) whenever I am not specifically updating or downloading music software. I have a really basic laptop + my iPhone for email, Facebook, and all that stuff.

I'm still not sure I understand the need to keep a machine disconnected from the internet. I understand the issue with wi-fi and spikes, but a cable hookup doesn't cause any problems and you're not going to infect your machine just by having it plugged in. The only virus I've ever had was because I opened an .exe from an untrusted source, and boy did I learn my lesson. Unless you're being wantonly careless then there is absolutely no trouble at all. I hear people say "the DAW is my living therefore I'm not taking any risks with it," but I also know people who work in other fields like 3D animation, video production, photography and design whose livelihoods also depend upon a fully working machine crammed with powerful software, yet they're very much connected to (and using) the internet on those machines every day. Music producers are the only people I ever hear express fear of connecting their machines. It's weird.

To me it's mostly about not having to go through EVERY single program installed and trying to figure out the update settings. I generally do anyway to stop any possible auto update actions from occurring (even just reaching out for a connection can distract the system from audio stuff) but if there is simply no connection to be found to start downloading crap in the background in case I missed something then I don't have to worry about resources being pulled away from my work. It's why I don't dig the CCC stuff or the new Startscreen (and the mountains of crap from other necessary software I use). It seems every durned program these days wants to go on little side journeys to their own desired intertube locations when I want the computer COMPLETELY focused on my project. I also don't like having my AV active while I work because it causes NOTICEABLE performance issues and whitelisting stuff (which I deem a security thread even if it's coming from Cake... or PRETENDING it's coming from Cake) is not something I do. So I yank the cable and that's that. Even if a I missed a setting in one of the many programs installed all it can do is search for a connection which is a lot better than actually connecting to something to have a little chat with the mothership or worse start downloading something when I'm trying to record into an already oppressive project ready to crush my system. It also prevents me from getting lazy and poking around on the intertubes on my good system (thus exposing it to potential critters). I generally keep my laptop in the room for that. When I actually want to snag an update for something or do some sensitive online stuff I am forced to really think about it beforehand and physically make the connection. So I turn all the AV stuff back on, connect the cable, update the AV (and Windows security updates), do what I gotta and disconnect again. Massive PITA but it keeps things running smoothly. I do it so rarely too that I can usually pinpoint when problems arose. Like if I did a round of updates (which I'll create a restore point before doing) I can say "Oh yeah... I did that on THIS day" and just load the restore point I made beforehand until I can figure out what went wrong. I've never really had to revert back but I credit that to my hyper vigilance. Honestly I just too stupid to deal with problems AFTER they occur nor do I want to deal with the down time or even regular maintence required for an online system (which I do on my internet system by simply WIPING and restoring the entire computer via system images every so often). That's my reasoning anyway... but I'm crazy as fartboogers.

For whatever the worth - the reason I am OK for MY system's having the Cakewalk folders excluded from real-time scanning is that I am not ever dealing with those folders unless I am actively in Sonar, so no files are being added that I am not personally adding while creating tracks, and projects. Further, all of those libraries WERE completely scanned as they were being initially loaded, as well as during regular full system scans I run. And, LASTLY further, anything I DO download is still getting scanned in real time, no matter where its final destination on my hard drives is, and I don't ever visit sites with naughty bits, from my music production computers. I have never had any virus issues on any music production computer, and all were/are connected to the internutz. Whenever I have a program that wants to have its own ideas of when updates should be checked, I make note of it, disconnect its little mechanisms for doing so automatically, and then I periodically manually check for updates, OR I may allow some programs to notify me if updates are available, but never let any program decide to initiate some massive download of maintenance, so they never get in the way of anything while I am working on music matters. This is the thing... 1) If you don't ever update any software of any sort fine, go ahead stay off the internet. It will probably work forever. 2) What generally happens is people do update their software (Sonar/plugins etc) then one day they wonder why it doesn't work (mainly because their dependencies are too old e.g. firmware, drivers, libraries, windows update etc). 3) Updates contain more bugfixes than new bugs. Also more often than not performance is improved (yup in the past it often would be the opposite!). On the RARE occasion there is a problem you can rollback and one would hope you have backups (although with Sonar itself not so rare, sorry to say that). If you are updating any of your software you are best staying completely up to to date, otherwise you may end of experiencing strange and mysterious bugs that nobody else is getting.. Otherwise freeze your PC, take it off the internet. Don't mess with it at all. Don't install or update anything.

That is a great idea! Brilliant. But with some modification, though, please, recognizing that different people have different backgrounds, needs, and goals: some DAW tutorials begin with assumptions that just do not fit some people. eg. "Ready to start? Let's make a drum loop. " NO - not for everyone. Or "Ready to start? Plug in your guitar." NO - not for everyone. But there are not that many necessary paths .. more than 2, certainly, but maybe less than 7. [edit to be less provocative]

williamcopper That said, I noticed that immediately nearly everyone pounced on the OP, and either assigned him/her troll status, or trogdolyte status, or some other negative thing. At this point I know Sonar pretty well, and I still don't really like it that much.
No they did freaking not. That only started happening after OP didn't reply for half a day (and still hasn't) indicating they could quite possibly be a drive by troll until another user said they knew the person and explained the situation (and even themselves admitted some frustration at the OP). At which point a bunch of people jumped up at the ready to help, again. But of course let's make this all about how you've been persistently persecuted here on the forum... again... as you trash the product... again... for no reason... again... and will still likely be given any help you need... again... and again... and again. Yup, yer real hard done by, willie. Makes ya wonder why you even stick around such an awful, hateful place.

I have seen you constantly moan about how "mean" everyone is to you and anyone making the same type of ridiculous demands/complaints. You did it again here and you will no doubt continue doing it. And if there was any mistake as to why I'M so mean to you it's because I am almost positive you are a long term user using an alternate handle just to stir up crap for teh lulz. Same posting style. Same bullcrap. Same victim complex... blah freaking blah. I only point it out so others can see the pattern and make their own decisions as to what you are. You can similarly use this post as PROOF that Beepster is mean... because I AM mean... but only to those who deserve it. And WTF are you on about with the aliens crap?! lulz

Sounds great, but isn't that already realized as versions? Music Creator 7 is simple and straightforward, so is Sonar Artist. Or are you talking about so called "wizards", like workspaces in Samplitude Music Studio?

The second would be "I want to edit what I recorded and add processing when I mix it." And so on. Not a bad idea at all. Apple give away Garageband with OS X and iOS and as a "first DAW" it's presumably not as mind-blowing for beginners as finding yourself facing a full-blown "everything's possible" DAW that has to start by assuming you know something. That Garageband is useful as a leader to persuade people who've outgrown it to get Logic Pro is probably as coincidental as many pre-configured Windows machines coming with "MS Works", an all in one office application that lets you do basic stuff and points you in the direction of Office when you outgrow it. Though MS not including Works import filters in Word and Excel was a bit of a faux pas. :-/ Logic even has a default mode on installation that hides most of the more involved (though necessary to do most things) functions and looks just like Garageband. Which then results in posts on Logic forums by baffled people wondering why the new version of Logic has taken away most of Logic's "pro" functions. Maybe there's a place for a very, very cut down version of Sonar. Simpler than the most basic Sonar version, that lets you track and mix and do a bit of processing, e.g. eq, one basic compressor, a delay or two, basic reverb, a simple synth or two, that sells for a much lower price tag and outputs projects that are easily imported into Sonar. The catch is that PCs being what they are the new customer will still probably find they have to dig around in the more arcane bits of Windows just to get latency down to a usuable level. Not sure what the answer is to that other than to pressure MS to develop a Core MIDI/Audio equivalent, and then there's still the wifi etc. driver writers to deal with.

The second would be "I want to edit what I recorded and add processing when I mix it." And so on. Craig, I thought that was what Music Creator7 is??? I'm looking at it on the website and it's CW's simplest version (basically record and mix). Even the sales pitch is geared towards those with NO recording experience whatsoever. But that isn't really what this is about is it? The OP bought Sonar Plat and why can't that be like CWPro9? Or at least scaled down to something simple enough to just "push play and record" tape recorder style.. Is there a possibility that this could be accomplished using the screensets? I mean, you can customize them to include (or take out) just about any view right? Could there be a "basic" set up (there might already be one, but I'm talking about one that's REALLY basic)?

Somebody mention aliens? I said years ago the invasion plan is well underway.. And that cakewalk are conspiring with them.
I hope people find this useful. I have 100+cans of baked beans in my attic awaiting the imminent attack. The tin cans protect the food from radiation and the methane produced from consumption may repel them.

This thread's been pretty gentle with the OP. That's what I think anyway. Sure would like to hear some details on his problems though. I'd love to assist if I can.

Thats the frustrating part. I know that this forum is eager to offer all sorts of assistance. I've seen it many times but we can do nothing if the poster wont participate. I also know we are a really great bunch that will go out of our way to help. If only! Thank you and all the others that help so many all the time.

I'm not sure I fully understand the SONAR video game type of reference …. I was shot down a while back in a thread I started for mentioning how I would like to see SONAR do what Samplitude Pro X2 does with the customizable workflow environments . It is very easy to switch between Power User , Post Production , Mastering , Default and Big Icons , Hows about giving me some of that Kenny

Regarding that comment that it is harmless to keep the DAW machine plugged into the Internet, I agree. That is correct. However, I did get a truly destructive virus two separate times. One was from clicking a seemingly harmless post on Facebook. Having to rebuild my machine twice made me overly cautious and borderline paranoid. Also, anything running in the background has some effect on performance so I disable everything that is not absolutely needed.

I think the OP's friend pretty much explained the situation. That would be (Ozz) at post #29. Might be a good idea to re-read the post. He stated he suggested Sonar to his friend, who apparently trusted his endorsement and went for it. However, the OP didn't like what he discovered and the technical issues and shock hasn't helped. I have friends that put a lot of trust in my opinions about software, tools and musical equipment. However, when it comes to software, I always direct them to the demo version so they can decide whether it's for them. Like Ozz stated... He thinks the OP merely came here to vent, not so much to look for help. I don't know what sort of help can be offered, when he doesn't like the program. I would like to add, that just because someone doesn't post back immediately doesn't mean they're trolling or being an ass. Anyone can have a medical issue, Die, be arrested, have a service disconnection or any number of possibilities going on that prevents their presence.

As much as some people here would like this place to be a Utopia , I hate to break the news to a few of you … It's not . For some of us , this little corner of the web and its community is about dealing with life on life's terms 2 years ago I went through a similar scenario as the OP …. Bought a brand new computer , picked up a USB sound card for it , went from S 6 PE to X3 and then said WTF … I happen to think the OP's actions speak louder than his words … He spent a ton of money doing what he thought was the right thing by upgrading everything from his hardware to the most recent version of SONAR , then he found out a few frustrating things … Why not back off and give the fella some room to get his bearings , the guy doesn't want to be fixed … He just want's to be happy . i also am always online... for extra security you can use a script-blocking add-in in your browser, i use noscript in firefox, you have to whitelist sites to allow javascript... what with javascript being the biggest security hole on the internet, it's very useful :-)
