I am more against than for a subscription model. That being said, if we were to be assured that Cake's model would really be a SUBSCRIPTION model rather than a RENTAL model... Than I cannot foresee any trouble with that I guess. I am still to be convinced, though...

Me, I'm not afraid of a subscription model that I might have been a few years back. I've had several misconceptions and read tons of negative opinions about enough things to know that until I see it and experience it, I shouldn't narrow my option down.
What if it was a monthly option, that would allow you to buy in for a month, try something out and then change your mind and abandon it for something that fits you better?

Although I thought the survey could have been split up into a couple of smaller surveys, I was excited to fill it out. I think this is somehow still an old-school way of delving into what people want, but it's fine with me at the moment. I really feel the same way about features in X3 as I did in X2. So, I hope that many others with echo what I submitted. Thanks, CW for putting that together, and please read them all. After all, we spent more time filling them out than it would take to read and file away.

If Cake provided a subscription model and also a one time payment option that would get a SONAR version just as we can today and use it unlimitedly, the subscription model would be fantastic for demoing any new version of SONAR that happens to be available for subscription! I was filling out that survey a few days ago, and as soon as it asked about "subscription services", I hit the 'back' button and wrote in my thoughts. I wasn't sure if there would be another space to write in my thoughts on the subsequent pages, so I made sure I could write it in on the previous page. I told them that I would be very unhappy if Sonar changed to a subscription-only service. If they want to give people that option, that's fine. I really would not want to be forced into a subscription plan for something I previously purchased.

Surely, no company would force you to subscribe to a version you already own. That would just be a serious slap in the face. And, my suggestion to CW would be they continue offering a full-price retail version you can buy outright, but for those who would prefer to "amortize" their purchase, they could through a subscription model. The difference being, that the retail users would be required to purchase newer versions at the upgrade price, while subscription customers would simply download and install the new version at will.
btw, I suggest the subscription model offer a slightly more expensive "all-in" option to use literally everything CW offers, including the training materials.

As far as subscription models, I personally don't see that being deployed before the next version. And to be honest, I think a subscription model would be great, if it's more like the Netflix model, where you can pause it. If the DAW were able to "check" its activation to enable the Audio Engine, that could be a great way to allow new users to get visually and ergonomically oriented with Sonar without allowing them to actually use the software. Then, activation could be based on a monthly subscription. So, for bands that want to record themselves, but do so only a semi-annual basis, they can rent the activation for two months out of the year, for say, $10-20/mo. the longer your subscription runs, the better your discount (or more subscriptions). I'm basing the latter on the GotoMeeting pricing model.
I may not understand everything you are saying about subscription services but surely you are not comparing A streaming service like Netflix or Gotomeeting to the purchase of software. The main difference of course is that fact that you don't actually purchase movies through Netflix. You rent the streaming service. You never own the content you watch on Netflix. The problem is that Netflix has removed movies I had in my watch list before I had a chance to watch those movies. They replaced those movies with others in their general list that I don't care to watch. I like Netflix and I pay for the service but I don't rely on it to create my own movie or use it to edit video. You are not paying for the use of a software application. You are paying for the ability of streaming entertainment, Thus you are renting a service. Can you imagine renting Sonar X whatever version and a new update comes out that adds in some plugins and removes others? or even adds feature you don't like with no way to roll back to the other features. The nice thing about purchasing a licence for the Sonar is you get to use it and if you decide not to upgrade you don't need to. What would I do if I rented Sonar X4 and they come out with Sonar X5 but it only works on machines that have windows 8 or windows 10 machines? Sure I may still be able to use X4 on my windows 7 machine, but I am still renting it. I would need to upgrade my computer to upgrade my Sonar Version. While I have done this by choice in the past I would not want to be forced into this situation. Losing your license limits your upgrade options. Renting Software has many disadvantages and after using Adobe's model briefly I can honestly tell you I will never ever rent software through a subscription service. Let me guess ,SONAR Komplete Ultimate Pro Platinum Edition includes the Komplete Ultimate from N.I., complete drum library of expansion for AD2 from XLN. What else did I miss?
